I gave up soda 2 years ago for seltzer and this thread is making me crave a Diet Vanilla Pepsi so bad
I gave up sodas 13 years ago, and it actually surprises me sometimes when I realize how many people still drink them. I don’t think I could drink a whole soda now if I tried. I can’t handle sweet drinks at all. I’ve been given sweet tea a couple of times when I ordered unsweet and have tried to just drink it, but I could only get through a few sips. (But I still love sweet foods.)
oh 100%, I think I would take a few sips and then push it to the side at this point
It's funny how sweet places make sweet tea when every table in America is set with sugar packets that can make it sweeter if that's what someone wants.

eh, as someone who used to drink (and make) lots and lots of sweet tea growing up in the south, it's not the same. sugar isn't very soluble at cold temperatures; when you make sweet tea it's typically sweetened while brewing (i.e. hot water) or with a simple syrup. both these methods create a much more consistent sweetnes and unified sweet taste. when you dump sugar into a glass of iced tea, you just end up with lots of sugar crystals that sink to the bottom of the glass. it's very unsatifactory.
edit: I used to order half and half at places that had super sweet tea (like McAlister's deli - loved that place but the tea was craazy sweet).
I get that it's easier to dissolve in hot water, but also it's not like sugar crystals are precipitating out of the tea when you put ice in it, and if there are that's probably too much sugar.

Finding any good cuisine inspiration in NC? I love that there’s so much quality produce and the farmers markets. I always try to take advantage of hitting an orchard or two and farmers market when I’m up there.

My daily sugar intake is probably well above what a normal person should have.
I realize it's a problem, but I'm just not committed to doing anything about it ... at least for the immediate future.

I have a serious sugar addiction. I've mentioned this before. It's gotten worse. I'm up from 2 teaspoons of sugar to 3 because I ran out of fake milk. I added an extra tsp like a dummy thinking it would bring the creamy, I haven't been able to go back to 2 now.

made some cauliflower wings tonight, with a salad things with shredded purple cabbage, carrots, green onion, cilantro (suck it, haters), kale, broccoli, and the leftover crumbs of the cauliflower from the 'wings'. made a greek yogurt/cilantro/parsley/garlic/lime/tajin (awesome mexican citrusy pepper dry spice - really good on lime soaked jicama) as a dressing and it was really good.
Edit: had some margaritas watched enter the dragon later and the dressing (basically a yogurt-y chimichurri) made a really good chip dip.
I never liked cauliflower or broccoliflower any kind of way. Seems like I always get that sulphur taste which I personally dislike. It’s weird because you can cook that sulphur flavor out of cabbage, but no matter how I’ve had cauliflower, it always tastes off to me. That includes fried, tempura, pizza crust, pickled, in a crawfish boil, fake mashed potatoes, etc.
But speaking of fuck the haters, I used an entire bunch of cilantro minus about half the stems in a salsa I made today. I’m by myself in Florida for a couple weeks, and WD has my favorite bagged tortilla chips (torti yahs) for buy one get one free. So I’m like fuck it. This is going to happen. I didn’t go crazy with extra ingredients like pineapple or mango, and I didn’t roast anything off this time. It’s simply the zest and juice of 3 limes, 3/4 of a shallot, 2 toes of crushed garlic, 4 ears of raw corn, an heirloom tomato, pack of heirloom cherry tomatoes, a pack of san marzano tomatoes, 2 jalapeños, 2 serranos 1 Fresno, and the aforementioned bunch a cilantro (for all that soapy goodness). Spices used were salt, black pepper, cumin, smoked paprika and cayenne with a couple shakes of red wine vinegar. It should get better by the hour and the day, but it already tastes pretty fucking delicious. I’ll post a photo later when my work server is back up and I can hit an image host site not on mobile.
I'm in Pensacola and I was going to ask you esteban for bar recs last night but my cousin and her husband aren't really the type to go out, it seems.
Oh shit. There’s a few of them. Daytime I like wine bar on Palafox because of the 12-6 happy hour. There’s a couple decent brew pubs downtown and some decent whiskey bars. I haven’t been out except to wine bar since the pandemic, so I’m not 100% on everything open. George Bar & Bistro has some great seasonal cocktails as does Restaurant Iron. V Paul’s has a great bar but only average food but is also a pretty decent bar. Of course if you’re not in Pensacola Beach but are in the city and want to drink hit me up. I’m chilling at the crib and have salsa. Haha. Pelicans play at 6 so I’ll be around.
Mad. Dumb move by me jabbing an avocado seed with a knife. You can guess how that went. Currently waiting in urgent care for stitches. Haha. I was thinking of this YouTube video I once saw where the lady mentioned a friend getting a serious hand injury by hitting the seed with a knife then turning and presto. Cut.
edit - 3 stitches. No loss of use or cut tendons or nerves. Just a straight jab into the meat between my index and middle fingers between those balls where your fingers parts meet your hand but below the finger webbing.
This was a dull knife with a super sharp point. I jabbed the pit the first time and it only dinged it. So I jabbed the shit out of it and it just bounced off the pit through the avocado and into my hand between my fingers. Luckily it was just into the meat between nerves and tendons. This is the mummy version:
Stitches and blood. I got a shot in my hand which made the cut bleed which it wasn't doing, so I'm assuming a bunch of the medicine leaked out with the blood. The stitch pain was bad, but I didn't want more shot. Pwnd
Made some basmati rice tonight for a Thai red curry. Did not rinse. Tasted great.
Basmati is the shit and best & with saffron when possible. The US grows a lot of heirloom rice too. There are some badass varietals. Did you toast off the basmati first or just boil it?

i love basmati. if i'm making a pilaf or something in the skillet i usually toast it first. since I was just gonna cover it with curry I just tossed it in the rice cooker. I had a vegetarian cheat day yesterday and sauteed some shrimp, then deglazed and did some shallot, red pepper, garlic, ginger, jalepnos and a serrano, and mushrooms. once sweated, I tossed in some crunchy peanut butter, red curry paste (store bought from local asian market) and coconut milk. topped with green onion, cilantro, sambal olek over the basmati. money.

Yeah, and I already knew better. Like I said in the very first post about it, I was thinking about that video of the lady warning against cleaving and twisting it when I jabbed it. Main cutting board was in the dishwasher, so I was just being lazy. I cut another one today but ate the side without the pit. I'll carefully take that out. This lady Felicia I work with was telling me that there is a decent tool for this on Amazon for like 9.99. Let me see if I can find it.
Yeah. You have the cilantro gene but even without cilantro, it’s so good. Salt, lime juice, all that goodness stashed in a creamy fruit that is accentuated by acid and salt. It’s an apex food in my opinion.

I mean all that stuff on it's good, but I'll eat it just plain off the pit. So delicious.
You convinced me to eat that last half I had. I did use a spoon to take out the pit. Under salsa with chips. A good fresh late night snack.
So what I did was carefully - this time cubed the avocado and salted it a little. Then I spooned over some of the raw salsa making sure to get a shitload of the liquid (mostly heirloom tomato and lime juice) and ate it all. Love freshness over almost anything.

Rhubarb has made it's way to the south and I am excited
My mother in law grows them up in Buffalo. She likes to make pies out of them. I’ve had it on composed plates in restaurants, but isn’t it super astringent unless you cook it or have some kind of poisonous part of the plant?

Guess I could have just looked it up...
Yeah if you don't cook it it's really sour and has a similar texture as celery. Just the leaves are poisonous iirc. I looked it up on time after I tried some of the leaves to see if they were also sour, which they were.
