The National is a rock band from Cincinatti, Ohio that formed in 1999 when brothers Bryce and Aaron Dessner met Matt Berninger and Scott Devendorf through Scott's brother, Bryan, who also joined the band. Their debut self-titled album was released in 2001. It was ok. They released a few more solid albums until 2005 when they released Alligator. After that, they have had a run of very solid to great albums with Boxer (2007), High Violet (2010) (my fave) , Trouble Will Find Me (2014), and most recently, Sleep Well Beast (2017).

Live Show
The production for this tour is so great and despite a lot of their songs being slow burners, they play with a lot of energy the whole way through.
Personal Notes
I like them a lot and they were probably the best show I saw last year.

I had never really listened much to The National until the Roo lineup came out, but I've really come to like them quite a bit, they might be my most anticipated set on Saturday this year.

Somewhere in the archives, there is a photo of me, rdk and SupeЯfuЯЯyanimal's arm next to Matt when he went out in the crowd the last time (I think) they played.
Graceless is the biz. They were so much better at Shaky than ACL, but I think that had more to do with it being during the day and missing out on the production, which is very Radiohead esque.

Was at both of those as well and agree that it had everything to do with blazing sun vs night headlining spot.

Matt came out into the crowd during Osheaga and ran into me with his long, long mic cord, causing me to spill my drink. Not even mad, that set ruled. They were also billed above Post Malone on their day lol
first, you need to put on your house slippers and velvet evening robe. Then, open the shades on your 10th story loft apartment windows so you can gaze upon the city at night, embracing the quiet. Notice the slight fog rolling in. scoff slightly at the downstairs neighbor yelling at his TV. pour yourself a dram of scotch, settle into your evening chair and dim the lights. briefly have a moemnt of wistful reflection on the dullness of your day. Then you can put the needle to the groove...
doesn't matter which album, they all sound the same.

Fake Empire is one of my favorite album openers ever. And the contrast from the immediate follow-up of the Mistaken for Strangers guitar riff is perfect. Alligator gets a bit of a bump because of how much I love Mr. November.

Sleep Well Beast feels like it should definitely be higher, but honestly idk what I'd bump down to move it up... that's what you get for having a consistently excellent career I guess

I've felt regret for skipping their set at Shaky (was just really tired after a long weekend and it seemed like a super slow way to end the weekend. Didn't want to fall asleep.) Glad I'll get to make up for it here at Roo. Should be a nice show before Lonely Island lol.

High Violet is a perfect album. Boxer is what first got me into them, but it starts to tail off towards the end in my opinion. That said, I don't think I could even try to rank everything between Fake Empire and Start a War.
I really enjoyed Sleep Well Beast too. I feel like it will age really well.

Could be worse though. Could be Band of Horses ripping through like 5 songs of a new album that had been released the day prior.
That's like...a perfect release date as it relates to Roo? Still fresh and exciting, but a you've got a bit of time to digest the songs
I like to have enough time to make memories that the songs have soundtracked. This Little Simz / Solange release date was perfect imo. But I guess it is nearly a month out. I was for some reason thinking it was just 2-3 weeks.

I’m glad they’re releasing something new tbh. That Shaky set was the best show I saw last year but I don’t need to see the exact same show again.

Agreed I just wish it would have been released earlier than it will be. Oh well its not as close to Roo as I was for some reason thinking originally.
Saw The National on Wednesday in a 1,500-person venue. The show was great and I'm really enjoying their new album. When Matt went into the crowd, our hands touched. He didn't know it, but I knew it, and that's what counts. I even made their Instagram!
The second picture in blue, all the way to the right, towards the bottom with what appears to be a pained expression on my face. It me. I'M FAMOUS, BABY!
I really enjoyed their show. They started off playing entirely from the new album, which was a bit more low-energy due to just the nature of their current sound as well as crowd unfamiliarity. Their newer stuff is slightly more atmospheric and less melody-driven than some of their older stuff, but after playing most of the album they went into a bunch of fan favorites and the energy skyrocketed. I doubt they would have this similar of a setlist at Roo; they'll switch it up so it's more balanced. The new songs translated well live, and Matt is just a fantastic frontman.

I'm a little nervous about them going through the full new album. I liked it enough on first listen, but I really hope they switch it up like you said. Most of their recent setlists show them mainly doing the new stuff with a few hits as an encore. We shall see. Glad it was a great show.
1. Rylan 2. Where is her head? 3. Light Years 4. Not in Kansas 5. Oblivion 6. Quiet Light 7. The Pull of You 8. You Had Your Soul with You 9. Hey Rosey 10. Hairpin Turns 11. So Far So Fast 12. I am Easy to Find 13. Roman Holiday 14. Underwater 15. Her Father in the Pool 16. Dust Swirls in Strange Light
These will of course change after seeing them live. Where is her head is preemptively high just cuz it slaps on all cell videos of live shows I've seen.
