Maybe it's because I'm surrounded on a daily basis by people who continue to be Catholics, continue to keep a blind eye to everything that's happened, that the fact that Gayle or Tom would be attempting to help the Archdiocese is not overly surprising or even that out of the ordinary to me. But if the NFL wants to fine them or suspend her somehow or do something of that sort, then I would agree to it. I don't think the team itself or it's players or coaches should be penalized for it, though.
yeah definitely not, it seems very upper executive.
Still bums me out, though. Their names are on everything down here. I work in Benson Tower on the 23rd floor and the window by my cubicle overlooks the Superdome. I work for an organization that has named buildings after the Bensons. It's not a good look and not a good feeling

What those priests and brothers did over the years was clearly not cool and against the law and hurt people. That's the most important thing here. The Catholic Church and Archdiocese is paying out fortunes owed in restitution as they should be. They got dragged kicking and screaming to those solutions.
However, the Archdiocesan Communications Director has a job to do. Whether someone agrees with a slightly more watered down statement or not isn't really an issue. Any lawyer would tell you that as a defendant, you don't want to be cutting your own nutsack. Any good communications director in any company or arena should be working to mitigate damage and not pile it on against their own self-interest. It's not like she would have been expected to say something like, "Oh my God no. Tell those innocent victims that our coffers are full of gold and money, and we're just caretaking it for them for when they sue us under Article X, Section Y of the LA Civil Code and win their cases."
It still sucks that they would get the Saints in cahoots with them. That's an interesting PR play. I wonder if anything ever went out from the Saints on this? Also, what's probably more important is what might be in other emails rather than what's been disclosed which only looks like a "tip" of the proverbial iceberg. But if Benson maybe (?) sent out some kind of condolence letter echoing the messaging, that's expected if they have a PR relationship with the Saints organization.

the Saints Sr. VP of Communications should let them handle that on their own, and not give them an inch when presented with something as callus as "we don't want to say we "support" them".
im assuming a guy that high up was getting instructed from someone above him, considering it seems way outside of his job description. it could have come from either of the Bensens because this seems to have been a long term issue for this particular Archdioces.
Irsay got $500,000 and a 6 game suspension for a DUI, Kraft will probably eventually get something similar, but both of those things are owners acting shitty on their own. This would be owners being shitty and directing other employees to help (whether theyre complicit or not, theres still a power dynamic) which is worse, on top of the grimey act it self. I'd hope they just bring the hammer down on the execs, I'm pretty sure the 500k fine is the most they can do anyway.
they don't need to lose draft picks or anything. but, Donald Sterling, this seems like a worse human act. Sterling had a long history of being a terrible person, but the thing that got him canned was basically just an optics thing. imo this is a worse look and the family should probably be removed from ownership.
*i also forgot that Richardson decided to sell to avoid bad optics from his own sexual harrassment scandal, Gayle needs to sell or be kicked out. She's not even a part of the good ol boys club, so I wouldn't doubt the other owners being more harsh.
They're not going to strip Gayle Benson of the team. Greg Bensel was the director of media and public relations for a long time. I still don't get the angle why the church would be working with the Saints. Could they possibly think that despite the acts of their priests, the Saints hold greater goodwill with the public and duped them to work with them or got them to offer similar messaging? I don't know if any of that is illegal or if it's something where there was some type of arrangement or quid pro quo with the Saints. I guess we'll find out if anything comes out of this.
It's still early and a lot can come from this. But again, I just don't see this being a huge deal breaker for the majority of local fans because errbody is catholic around here. It's hypocritical
the saints probably have a better PR/communications team (this church was apparently settling for all kinds of shit, and im sure wasn't stocked with the top people), Tom/Gayle were big supporters I'm sure it wasn't a "hey lets reach out to the saints thing", it was most likely her/him reaching out to the church to offer their help, by using team resources.
lol idk man its just so indefensible from a team standpoint, they're basically going to have to end up using victim blaming/fake news and side with the church about how the investigation was just to attack the church.
When McNair made his "running the prison" comment, I was pretty much just like fuck this team I don't want to spend money on them, I wanted him to be held accountable for saying something so dumb. I really wanted Tillman to get as much shit from the fanbase and the NBA as possible for throwing Morey under the bus over China.
This is so much worse. I would be vocal about not supporting the team while the owner still owns it. Sterling was ousted because Doc and CP3 and the other players put pressure on the team.
We already know that Payton and Brees are pieces of shit so I have 0 faith (heh) that they'll say shit about it, and it's going to need to come from fans around the league and the other owners.

the league isn't just the Saints and their fans. there are 31 other fanbases and owners who more than likely don't want to be associated with that.
im sure when Richardson got in trouble all the Saints fans were aiming for his head, again, this is far worse. optically, morally.
"The Archdiocese reached out to a number of community and civic minded leaders seeking counsel on handling the pending media attention that would come with the release of the clergy names in November of 2018. Greg Bensel, Senior Vice President of Communications for the New Orleans Saints, was contacted and offered input on how to work with the media."
full stop, right here, you say no. you don't give tips to someone defending child abusers.
Makes me feel less bad for the blown PI last year. Cursed franchise, deserves all the bad luck now.
Yeah because horrible officiating has anything to do with that. I don’t see where they helped the Catholic Church cover up decades of pedophilia. They advised them on strategy for the release of the names of credibly accused priests. As tight as Tom Benson was with the Archbishop, it’s not a stretch for them to have reached out for comment and feedback from them and perhaps many other allied private businesses. It’s not like the Catholic Church here was/is all bad. Not by miles. They do shitloads of good for the region and needy.
An ugly chapter came to public light. I know some victims (females) personally. They help found S.N.A.P. which was an organization of the victims. They did lots of good helping this shit get exposed.
It’s the internet. Snap judgment proclamations abound. Everybody knows what they are talking about because they read it on Russian twitter. Most chicks are hot. Most guys are blonde haired and financially well off, maybe even medical doctors. What more could you want?
It's important to keep in mind that we don't actually know what all the emails say. The reason this came to light was because the Saints were trying to cover their asses by blocking their release.
Right now I believe what we know is that they advised the church on PR strategy to counter the check church's pedophilia scandal using team resources. This is where it becomes a league issue.
It's certainly bad optics and worse human being-ness at this point. I doubt it'll evolve into criminal or civil responsibility for the team, though
If some shit turns up in the emails where they suggested the Church cover shit up, it’s one thing. Just the same, I don’t trust anyone’s PR department to do anything but spin. They released a statement saying that the emails should stay within the parties in court unless they become part of the public record. I’m withholding judgment until that shit comes out. I have no issue with them offering PR opinions to an ally who is about to do one of the most uncomfortable things they probably ever had to do . I come from a family of lawyers and understand there is always shit going on behind the scenes.

It's an NFL team voluntarily advising on how to spin pedophilia. It's not like they were in this scandal and were trying to cover their own butts.
That’s ridiculous. The church was about to release the names of like 200 priests (or however many there were). Sucks it had to happen at all and you’d like to think they hadn’t covered that shit up for centuries. But the jig was up.

I'm confused. Which part is ridiculous? That it was voluntary, that they were advising them how to spin it, or that it was pedophilia?
It doesn’t seem that difficult, but I’m waiting on the full story to make any comment about the involvement. What apparently happened is that the Archbishop talked to Tom and probably told his people to reach out to the Saints and maybe their lawyers and other allies as a sounding board because they were about to release information that was going to be difficult. What’s the best way to put it out there? You go to PR or lawyers for that. Why the church didn’t have its own people to vet and release that shit is odd.
Okay. So nothing I said was actually ridiculous then.
I agree that we don't know the whole story. I said so in a previous post. Right now it just looks bad. Maybe later we'll find out it wasn't and that they're trying to block these emails because they're just very private people.

The way you put it was they voluntarily (in bold) offered that assistance. I’m sure it was requested.

Right but they could have declined. Their participation was entirely of their own volition. They opted into this.
Edit: to clarify, I agree that their participation was requested.
That’s fair. I’m not looking to defend the church or the team. Shit was wrong. Some of the stories that have been told to me were horrendous. I’d have preferred they stay the fuck out of it altogether.
