My favorites this year were mostly acts that we finally caught for the first time, playing stuff from some of our favorite albums:
10) +LIVE+ @ Bourbon & Beyond Festival - really solid, focusing on the great "Throwing Copper" album. 9) Vampire Weekend @ Kingston, NY Ulster PAC (a small, restored theater) - On the eve of the release date of their first album in 6 years, we heard songs from the new CD for the first time. Cool. 8) Tame Impala @ Mann Music Center (Philly). Only a few songs we hadn't heard, including B-Side "Led Zeppelin", but great show as always from Kevin. Lasers make everything better. 7) Mac DeMarco @ Osheaga - great, coherent set for the (former) home crowd 6) Mitski @ Osheaga - I didn't know you could do an hour of yoga while delivering a flawless set. 5) Sharon Van Etten @ Osheaga - focused on songs from "Remind Me Tomorrow", my favorite album of 2019 4) Death Cab for Cutie w/ Jenny Lewis @ Starland Ballroom (Sayreville, NJ) - same show as at Forest Hills Stadium and a sold-out Red Rocks, but in a small, GA venue, up close and personal. 3) Ray Lamontagne @ The Metro Philly - We were gonna skip this show due to a big family event earlier that day, but couldn't sell the mobile-only tickets. So we went- and loved the mostly-acoustic set by Ray accompanied by Carl Broemel of MMJ. Moral of the story- Go To The Show! 2) Caroline Rose @ Hollow Bar, Albany, NY - Tiny venue (a bar, literally) even for this "breaking" act. A little bit after the show they returned to clean up their gear, but still were happy to chat with us, take pictures and sign our copy of "Loner" (my favorite CD of 2018). Very special. 1) Racontuers @ Hammerstein Ballroom, NY, NY - Waited 11 long years, after passing on seeing them in 2008, and they delivered well over 2 hours of their best stuff. Jack was relaxed and playful with the audience while fully supporting his band mates.
Bon iver & tu dance @ Pablo Center at the Confluence: Cried most of the show, beautiful dance.
Daughters @ Turf Club: Aggressive, drunken chaos.
Apparat @ Primavera Sound Auditori: Sounded so good live, didn't expect the level of precision that the live musicians bring. Beautiful show hopefully sascha brings the show to north america eventually.
Black midi @ 7th St. Entry: Extremely talented, maybe a foot away from the guitarist. Having a ~13 year old at his first show next to me was hilarious.
Idles @ First Ave: High energy performance, far from flawless performance but the energy in the crowd was next level.
Janelle @ Primavera Sound: A+ stage presence
Massive attack @ Palace Theatre: Bucket list show, perfect sound, visuals were integrated well, elizabeth fraser as well.
Fka twigs @ Palace Theatre: New album works so well live, so much care put into crafting her live show.
Deafkids@ fraternal order of eagles mpls: brazilian noise band contrasted with country? karaoke in the bar area. their drummer destroys
Mark farina @ Hewing Hotel: Funky fun dj set with a great skyline view, poolside, sunset, cloud to cloud lightning storm.
10. James Murphy DJ Set @ III Points (Miami, FL) 9. PUP @ Culture Room (Fort Lauderdale, FL) 8. Anderson .Paak @ MSG (New York, NY) 7. Tenacious D @ Lollapalooza (Chicago, IL) 6. The Strokes @ Lollapalooza (Chicago, IL) 5. Tame Impala @ The Fillmore (Miami Beach, FL) 4. Florence & The Machine @ Gov Ball (New York, NY) 3. IDLES @ Lollapalooza (Chicago, IL) 2. Kacey Musgraves @ The Metro (Chicago, IL) 1. Car Seat Headrest @ The Beacham (Orlando, FL)
HM: Governor’s Ball Evacuation of 2019 (not a great time, but definitely an incredible [shit]show)

Kinda sad that both Phish shows were marred by factors outside of my control, but Friday's set was so loud it was painful. Makes it really hard to enjoy. Got to cross a lot off the bucket list though - Aphex, Girl Talk, Massive Attack, and Anthony Green. All pretty good shows.

All I have left is Greta Van Fleet tonight which won't make the Top shows and then 2 nights of Liquid Stranger which theoretically could be good enough to crack the lower end of the Top 10 based on his dynamite Bonnaroo set this year. Otherwise it looks like I saw some or all of about 189 sets that I remembered to note. First the best:
1. Guns 'N Roses @ Voodoo Fest - This was more than I ever thought it could be. Kudos to them for proving me wrong. I was by myself and loved just about every minute of it. The Misfits cover, the Soundgarden cover and the Velvet Revolver cover were all memorable bonuses.
2. Phish @ Bonnaroo Sunday - Sitting in the field at the end of another Bonnaroo with my 3 kids on Father's Day was special. It's hard to say that this wasn't as good as G'NR, because it was. But someone's gotta be #1.
3. Disco Biscuits (night 2 @ Fillmore) - Barber was fucked up for the first set, but they put it together hard for the second set. Show was f'n great (random 2020 note is they are playing it tonight on relax and rewind.
4. String Cheese Incident (night 3 @ Mardi Gras World) - I hadn't seen SCI in a while, and I fucking love them when it all comes together like this show and Night 2.
5. The Comet Is Coming @ Bonnaroo - Like Postjack said in his Bonnaroo recap, it exceeded expectations even though I know it was going to be good.
6. String Cheese Incident (night 2 at Fillmore)
7. Phish @ Bonnaroo Friday - Very special show. I love Phish, and while the Sunday show was the shit, I had a blast at this.
8. Rolling Stones @ Superdome - Fucking right. Who knew they were still this able and especially that Keith Richards was still that much on his game. He might actually be at his peak in his 70's which blows my mind that he's even still upright.
9. Brandi Carlile @ Voodoo - Superb. The ending cover of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You was the icing on the cake for this set.
T. Tame Impala @ ACL Fest - Typical Tame, Typically good

These ratings are wild. I don't thibk I ever see anything below 7. Most would be over 8.
Our rankings are probably different. Also, I think sometimes I'm harder on shit than other times. Anything over a 5 is still pretty good. I take it like they do here with restaurant ratings. Bomb (0 out of 5 stars) is a bomb. A 1 star restaurant is probably a chain. A 2 can be pretty decent. And that's sort of where I'm at but on a 10 scale and maybe a hair more generous. I went to several festivals, and most of the bottom rung is festival sets and opening acts. Particular hate paid to ASAP Rocky for a very late start at Buku and then trying to explain circle pits. Fuck that stupid bullshit. We know what the fuck to do. I was slamming 10 years before he was born. I'm probably not going to a Rocky set to mosh. Turnstile? Maybe.

If I had stuck around for the circle pit section at ASAP instead of bouncing for $B I would've dragged you in for LPFJ2 and we would've had a great time.
Lol. I was watching Turnstile from Bloodaxe Japan last night watching people skank and stage dive like at all their shows, and I was thinking no way I'm not going around the pit a few times for some 1980's throwback nostalgia.
