IMO Cooper is a no. Too old and if he left his position, NC would go to the crackpot Lt. gov. Mark Robinson. Josh Shapiro is a zionist Jew. That will not go over well with a large subsection of the Democratic caucus. Newsom can’t due to delegate votes. Whitmer had said no. Beshear could be in the same situation as Cooper, not wanting to abandon his state to full MAGA control.
Process of elimination: Mark Kelly or Pete Buttigieg
Cooper is term-limited and not running in the 2024 election.
shit, I thought they (Cooper / Robinson) were just re-elected in 2023. I guess strategically makes sense then. It would feel like a missed opportunity though when we just “got rid of the really old white guy” to just pick the oldest currently viable VP candidate on the short list when you could field an historically young ticket.
I think Beshear makes a lot more sense than Cooper. He's a Dem gov from a red state who also has a spine on LGBTQ issues, as far as I can tell.
Abortion + LGBTQ rights = winning message for Dems. Stop apologizing for what you believe.
But Kentucky is off the table in terms of any sort of state-level electoral boost you might get from fielding a particular VP candidate, whereas NC, PA, and AZ are in play and could be key.
I know that AZ has a democratic governor so she could appoint someone to replace Mark Kelly. Would the replacement have to run again in 2026 or 2028?
If it's 2026, I wouldn't want to have to defend a swing state senate seat in a midterm. We saw how things went the first time there were midterms during a black president's presidency. Also not sure how many more strong candidates AZ has considering they just recruited Kelly and Gallego in the last few years.
AZ Governor would fill the vacancy with a Democrat (by law), but that Senate seat is up for election in November 2026 whether it’s incumbent Mark Kelly or incumbent appointee.
I don’t love Kamala and never have but I think people will be very relieved to see a halfway decent debate performance against Trump if that ever happens.
It’s certainly a bold move but I’m happy the Democrats actually did something ballsy for once.
Same. But I'm probably not the only one that's back to voting in November. I go in knowing she likely won't change on some key policies but there's zero reason to not give her a chance.
Here's to hoping that the Dems take a major lesson here. People will back them when they do ballsy shit. They cower far too often and we are fucked if that doesn't change in the coming years.
Regardless. I'd just like to say it's been a fun couple years of shitting on Joe Biden and listing all the reasons he sucks. Fuck him. It should have never gotten to this point. I hope his heart is broken and he never recovers. I'm beyond glad to be rid of him and have one less thing to bitch about.

Let his astronaut twin take that Senate seat. Let's just get weird with it.
Ohhh shit. He spent time in space with a cosmonaut. I can already see QANON folks baking some stupid Marxist conspiracies.

Kelly was first elected in 2020, but won his first full term in 2022 so would need to defend in 2028. So many senate elections in Georgia and Arizona it’s hard to keep track

Same, they’d have an appointment, then an off cycle refill election (2026) then full term election in 2028.
Same process as when McCain died. They had to appoint a Republican (McSally) then Kelly beat McSally in the off-cycle in 202 to complete the term, then he won his first full term in 2022

Kinda hard for the far right to lean into any Russian conspiracy theory at this point.

I have to say, this is one of the best posts I've ever seen in my decade+ here, and there have been many incredible contenders that keep me coming back way too often, just looking for that next hit. I agree 10000000%, because Manchin is always kind of on our side but also likes to try to hold us hostage sometimes with nothing realistic to gain.
Anyway, Mark Kelly might be a good VP pick. Guy's resume's impressive, and he's legit. And I'm assuming Manchin just might be out of the question. Beshear makes some sense. Can I interest anyone in a nice John Kasich FTW?
Today. He intentionally mispronounced her first name, knowing that it's pronounced like Pamela, not the like the 1980's-90's pro wrestler Kamala. Trump has direct ties to Kamala's era of pro wrestling entertainment and uses that as a selling point to this day, so he knows what he's doing when he does that.

Sure, but picking a VP because they represent a purple state has always come across desperate as fuck to me.

It’s awesome that the Kamala campaign’s Twitter banner is brat green.
Charli’s been plugging along for over a decade releasing great tunes, but it felt like only a few people were paying attention. It’s cool to see brat summer be such a big thing

He gains plenty. He hopes to keep the party from moving left. That's his entire purpose. He's a jerk-off. If he did throw his hat in, it would be the same type of campaign as Shultz in 2020. It wouldn't be because he has a hope of winning but he can have some of the spotlight to talk about all his centrist bullshit and in doing that he keeps the "are the Dems too leftwing" talking pointing in the pundits' mouths.

the charli edits alone are gonna get gen z to vote Harris for the bit. vote or die y'all. the unknown next four years of trump sounds much more terrifying than an unknown next four years of coconut tree talk.

Whatever it takes.
I'm much more optimistic after today's events. Yeah Biden should've done this a year ago, and yeah Harris isn't the -=perfect=- nominee, but this is a VAST improvement.

Republicans have been doing that at least since she entered the 2020 Dem primary.
Good Politico piece is out on how and why he dropped. In a nutshell:
Steve Ricchetti, who’s been with Biden since his days in the Senate, drove to see the president at his house on the Delaware shore on Friday. Mike Donilon arrived on Saturday. The two men, both of whom had been by Biden’s side during key decisions about whether to seek the presidency in 2016 and 2020, sat at a distance from the president, still testing positive for Covid, and presented damning new information in a meeting that would hasten the end of Biden’s political career. In addition to presenting new concerns from lawmakers and updates on a fundraising operation that had slowed considerably, they carried the campaign's own polls, which came back this week and showed his path to victory in November was gone, according to five people familiar with the matter, who, like others interviewed for this article, were granted anonymity to discuss private conversations. Biden asked several questions during the exchange.
this is wonderful. again i dislike kamala and am only voting for her because she is not trump, but i LOVE seeing these people have fucking temper tantrums
Would love to the see them get someone other than Harris. Have always disliked prosecutors, one of the scummiest professions.
Vote or fuck you
I probably won’t vote if they nominate someone as in support of the genocide as Biden. I get it might be immature to be a single voter issue in an important election, I just don’t have the stomach to vote for someone I find morally reprehensible, even if the alternative is a monster.

all three of those you are opening yourself up to some serious risk, and it generally feels like the core of the democratic party want to wait this one out and fight back in 2028. I think it will be Bashear. Pete if they really think there is no shot at winning

like I said, I’m being selfish. I can’t stomach having the blood of tens of thousands Palestinian babies on my hands, even if it’s for the good cause of stopping the insane Trump movement. If you can, more power to you.
