Random Q, but how old are you? I find it interesting that your oldest listed show is in 2014 here. Is that because you started going to live music late or just nothing stands out before then? Not trying to sound rude, I'm honestly just interested.

That was my first big festival I went to. I went to a few EDM festivals in 2012 and 2013 but this was the first actual big festival I ever went to. My first real concert was even much later in 2016 (Oh Wonder). I'm not that young (I think? I probably am compared to most people on here), I think I've just started late with listening to other music than electronica.

Nah, it's all good. This board has a big age range. I was just being nosey. I started going to concerts pretty young, but my brother who is basically your same age just went to his first festival like 4 years ago. And you've more than made up for lost time! haha
Just to prove the point on a wide range of ages.....

Some notes:
• Any of these are likely to shuffle up or down the list depending on my mood... but my #1 will always be my #1.
• I could chew your ear off about any one of these shows, and what made it so special. But we would be here all week.
• I limited my list to one show per artist, because otherwise you might be stuck with a list that is 90% Radiohead / Patti Smith / My Morning Jacket / Wilco / Paul McCartney.
• Flaming Lips & Weezer was not one band opening for the other, but a weird rotating thing, so that's why I've listed it as such. It's impossible to separate the two. Each band played for 15 minutes or so for 3.5 hrs, bookended by a couple collaborations.
I've been looking at this thread for a long time but just couldn't get my head around the broad spectrum of concert experiences it's been my privilege to have. I still don't feel I can do any justice in ranking them so I'll give a chronological ordering instead and also have to toss in 10 honorable mentions as well.
Bush/Veruca Salt - 05/02/97 - Freedom Hall - Louisville, KY Since the subject is live music experiences in MY life it's only right to begin with my first concert ever. Tickets were present for 16th birthday and 350+ shows later it obviously had an impact.
Nine Inch Nails - 4/20/00 - Conseco Fieldhouse - Indianapolis, IN Mind-blowing performance with incredible lighting/effects too. I was in the pit and made it up to the railing early on which I clung to for the rest of the show. I don't know that I've still ever left a show so exhausted and satisfied.
Prince - 4/12/04 - Conseco Fieldhouse - Indianapolis, IN Even from up in the upper arena seating this show managed to amaze(!), as much for its big powerful performances as well as for its ability to connect and be intimate. The subsequent rarity has also only enhanced it's reputation in my memory.
Vote For Change Tour (Bruce Springsteen, REM, John Fogerty, Bright Eyes) - 10/02/04 - Gund Arena - Cleveland, OH I had been awake in preparation for over 24 hours before the show even began but it was all worth it when I was lucky enough to get a pit bracelet and the fatigue was forgotten once things got underway. My first time seeing any of these acts and all were unforgettable.
Radiohead - 6/17/06 - Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival - Manchester, TN What can I say on here that hasn't already been stated about this concert. I will add that it was my first Bonnaroo (I haven't missed any since) and Radiohead was the group that got me there. Thanks guys!
The Rolling Stones - 9/29/06 - Churchill Downs - Louisville, KY Churchill Downs really isn't a good place to have a concert, it was rainy, and my seat was about twice as far away from the stage as when I saw them play indoors the year before but this show was big enough and good enough to make it work and even trump that other one as good as it was too.
Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem - 10/03/07 - Waterfront Park - Louisville, KY I was destroyed when I discovered Arcade Fire's Funeral to learn that they had played a small club show 1 1/2 hours away before I knew about them. This double bill two years later did a lot to make up for it especially since I was into LCD Soundsystem by this time as well.
Paul McCartney - 4/17/09 - Coachella Music Festival - Indio, CA The draw to see this show was large enough to board a plane and it was totally worth it. I've surprisingly had the chance and pleasure to see him 3 more times since then (and they've all been every bit as good) but this one remains special for being my first and also as the show that took me to Coachella.
U2 - 7/02/11 - Vanderbilt Stadium - Nashville, TN Simply awe-inspiring. The staging for the U2360 tour as huge and impressive as it is, is honestly really overdone. However, the scope and power of their live performance really shrinks it down to size and even makes it almost unnoticeable.
Roger Waters - 6/11/12 - Bankers Life Fieldhouse - Indianapolis, IN Whereas the staging for U2 was quite frivolous, the presentation for The Wall while no less grandiose was in every way more awesome and effective. Absolutely tremendous concert!
Honorable mentions: Rage Against the Machine - Nashville, 12/08/99 The White Stripes - Indianapolis, 7/09/02 The Strokes - Chicago, 4/23/04 Pixies - Indianapolis, 6/07/05 Stevie Wonder - Nashville, 12/01/07 David Byrne - Louisville, 10/21/08 Pearl Jam - Bonnaroo 6/14/08 Patti Smith - New Orleans, 4/24/10 The National - Bonnaroo, 6/11/10 Bjork - Bonnaroo, 6/15/13
Hard to conceive of it but Fragility 2.0, 20 years ago today! Listening to a recording now and plan to watch the "And All That Could Have Been" tour DVD this evening.
Edit: Shout out also to Patti Smith 10 years ago this week which was an aftershow at Tipitinas during Jazz Fest that year. It was a few hours after I got to witness the final (to date) Simon & Garfunkel show. Sad that I won't be seeing her again next month at Homecoming as I was looking forward to that but have a recording for this one too so at least can enjoy that instead.
My first big arena rock show, I was 15 years old. This was the Load tour and they had that monster in the round stage. In terms of pageantry it kind of fucked me up for future shows, and instilled in me a bias for Metallica being one of the greatest live acts of all time. They just get it. The show I saw in 2017 was technically even better but this one still makes the list for being so formative.
My dad brought me to that day of Boston Calling when I was 11, and it really was an incredible experience. I was a pretty big OMAM fan at the time, and their set was great. But we decided to skip Young the Giant to get a front row spot for the National. It was an amazing set, and they ended it on Terrible Love where Matt jumped into the crowd right in front of me. Absolutely mindblowing.
HMs: Bon Iver, TD Garden 2019 - Fantastic setlist, amazing light show, finally got to see one of my favorite bands.
Car Seat Headrest, The Royale 2019 - The best crowd I've ever been a part of. Everyone was loving it and the performance was great.
The Cat Empire, The Royale 2019 - The only time I've been able to see my favorite band.
The blue stage on Sunday at Boston Calling 2018 - Was tired from the previous day and camped the stage the whole day. I believe the run was Zola Jesus > Dirty Projectors > Julien Baker > The Decemberists > Fleet Foxes.
