Hope it's OK to start a new thread for this so it doesn't get lost in the General Television thread.
Lots of year end lists are coming out now. What is everyone's top ten or five or whatever shows of 2019? I came up with a list but subject to change based on things people in this thread remind me of:
1. Fleabag - as a comedy fan it was so refreshing to see a real "comedy-comedy" completely sweep the awards and have critics fawning all over it. I call it a "comedy-comedy" because it's funny and consistently made me laugh, but obviously it also stretched the bounds of the genre in exciting ways. And every single performance in it was award worthy. I love great moments in TV and music, and one of my favorite moments of the year was
the first time Hot Priest calls Fleabag out on breaking the fourth wall
i literally squealed with delight when that happened.
2. Chernobyl - i was totally captivated by Chernobyl. amazing performances, absolutely horrific, but i just could not stop watching it.
3. Dark - biggest mindfuck of the year, perhaps the most flawlessly executed time-space continuum piece of sci fi i've ever seen. can't wait to see how they wrap it up next year.
4. Unbelievable - i've already sung the praises of this but highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of police procedurals. even if you aren't it's a fantastic example of the genre. the first episode is tough to watch, but it's necessary to understand the weight of what follows.
5. Succession - i watched both s1 and s2 a few months ago. loved them both but slightly preferred s1. i had a hard time breathing at the peak of the s1 finale. but s2 (which is what i'm ranking here) was also superb. it's supremely entertaining television, and odd since there really isn't anyone to "root for" although my empathy for the characters increased significantly during s2.
6. Big Mouth - they really nailed this season. super funny, super ridiculous, but also strangely informative. really puts into perspective what it was like going through puberty. i wish it were appropriate for kids to watch this when they are going through puberty.
7. I Think You Should Leave - it's great to see a sketch show just fuck up the whole genre. so good.
8. Righteous Gemstones - at this point i still prefer Vice Principals but goddamn how good was this show? shout out to edi patterson MVP.
9. Queer Eye - i love this show dearly, and personally it came along at a time this year when my wife and I just really needed it.
10. The Orville - such an under the radar show, spiritual successor to star trek next gen. mcfarlane started this out as more of a pure sci-fi comedy but really quickly it turned into just a damn good show. great world building, great characters, great stories that really make you think and bring the emotion.
Honorable Mentions:
Watchmen - because we just watched the first six episodes of this yesterday. Holy shit. Will probably end up top ten but I want to see how it wraps up.
The Crown - similarly we haven't finished this yet but it's just so wonderful. shout out to Olivia Coleman.
Dollface - we just finished this Kat Dennings comedy on Hulu. hilarious and meta take on female friendships. easy to watch and a lot of fun.
The Boys - almost considered this for top ten. we've been awash with "anti hero" genre for almost two decades but something about this felt refreshing and exciting. shout out to Antony Star, one of the most overlooked performances of the year.
Silicon Valley - still in progress but i love what they've done with the final season.
I didn't really connect with Queer eye as much this season just because of the location really. Like, I lived in Kansas, had church issues, and other general references to American pop culture, that I just don't get in Japan.
The Duece Mindhunter Chernobyl Ken Burns Country Music Righteous Gemstones Victoria on Masterpiece Theater Big Little Lies (Meryl Streep saved this season)

There was also a regular season this summer. That's the one I was talking about. I enjoyed the Japan one but not as much as America.

The one where JVN goes back to his highschool made me a crying mess

I'm kind of a Streep skeptic/hater but she fucking owned my soul this season of BLL. I hated that person she played so much. I do think the season ultimately felt like a letdown, despite peaking with an extremely good episode, probably the best of the two seasons, in episode three or four, I forget exactly which it was.
Some real interesting stuff about mothers with Streep and her son, Kidman and her kids, Woodley and her son, and Bonnie and her mother (I only remember Bonnie's name I guess), until some of the Bonnie's mom shit got hokey.

Dark and Succession were probably my two favorite things I watched this year. Also loved Chernobyl and When They See Us. Dead to Me was really fun and doesn’t seem to have gotten much attention.

Dead To Me should have been in my honorable mentions. I haven't seen much internet chatter about it but shout out to christina applegate for her emmy nom. but she was up against PWB so there was no hope of a win.
Fleabag Succession Chernobyl Watchmen Barry Veep Shrill Ramy Catastrophe Years and Years You're the Worst Forever Russian Doll BoJack Horseman The Act Euphoria
I should also add that I just started watching The Good Place, and I like it a lot.

My 2019 Final Rankings (Unless I remember some stuff that I'd forgotten)
10. Rick and Morty - great, but brief, half of a season for the show. Some classics
9. Barry - That "ronny/lily" episode was amazing
8. Mindhunter
7. Unbelievable
6. Big Little Lies
5. Righteous Gemstones - funniest show I saw all year, full of belly laughs. I find myself just randomly calling people "Uncle Baby Billy" all the time
4. Chernobyl - best miniseries of 2019
3. Watchmen - A few of the episodes of this show were the best of any I've seen maybe ever, especially "This Extraordinary Being"
2. Succession - It's probably my favorite show on television right now, and Season 2 would've been my favorite tv of just about any other year. It was nearly flawless and I'm completely obsessed. The season finale was perfect, also, and has me super hype for Season 3 (hopefully by the end of the year?)
1. Mr. Robot - When one of your favorite shows ends with its best season yet, filled with uniquely artistic episodes that defied expectations, and actually ended in a way that felt perfect, you have to rate it number 1.
