Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I will say, it is pretty wild that they've been inhabiting the same exact parcel of property, which they own, for 20+ years and haven't really made any improvements insofar as infrastructure.
I wonder if it has to do anything with the lack of non-Bonnaroo events on the farm. I think everyone assumed that over time there would be other festivals and events at the farm but that hasn't really happened. Maybe it isn't worth the investment if the farm is only being used for Bonnaroo? Or maybe it is a chicken egg situation where to have other events they need the added infrastructure but it is difficult to attract other events without it.

I think it’s all coming. Live Nation has been slowly doing capital investments in the site since they bought it, and now they’re adding more events etc. Covid probably slowed them down a bit but I’m sure we’ll see additional changes this winter.
We say we want more infrastructure because I hurricane hit the site on one of basically 2 days where it would have resulted in cancelation. But when Bonnaroo is a glorified Live Nation amphitheater that holds a festival once a year I think folks will be pretty bummed about that too
I don't know what sort of management you expected from them to prevent saturated fields from being muddy. Like, specifically, what was the proper way to address this?
Future Considerations 1. Pave the Tollbooth Entry Zones - these have always been a disaster even when it’s dry, ie pitted, bumpy, etc. This is just stupid that they don’t have this done after 20 years. 2. Redo Bushy Branch - I believe they already are planning this, IIRC the want to widen and add an extra lane for local traffic and better entry. Much of Bushy Branch has a big ass ditch on each side of it. Those are literally meant for water if adjacent land is properly sloped for water runoff. 3. Regrading - This goes for both certain campsites and also sections of Centeroo. General regrading to improve runoff conditions, etc. certain sections should be fine if on any sort of slight slope. Otherwise, things should be slightly sloped (a couple inches over a dozen feet). Within regrading, adding small ditches within the campsite would help collect excessive runoff and feed it to other major collection areas, e.g. the ditches alongside Bushy Branch, some of those wetland-esque ponds out by Pods 9 and 10. Also, think Which Ditch. That’s literally to take water away. Shit should be properly graded. Water goes downhill. 4. Underground Drainage System - Think golf courses. When they can’t naturally shed all the water needed, they also use underground drainage, catch basins, etc. It’s probably not realistic to have an expensive drainage system installed throughout the campground, but Centeroo could / should probably have some drainage added. 5. Pave key Centeroo roads and main thoroughfares like the Shakedown street. I’ll be the first to say, I don’t want to be camping on concrete, but some paved roads provide improved accessibility; thinking fire trucks and ambulances. 6. Gravel the current grass paths where cars drive - This would be slightly controversial, and I don’t think you’d need to do every path, but turn some of the grass paths into actual gravel. I’ve read multiple posts on Reddit saying the maintained roads were fine so make more roads “maintained” 7. Plant Water sucking trees - Trees like willows are water hogs and will suck up literally every once of water in a damp area. Campgrounds need shade, add trees in strategic locations and you help with the water and provide an improved camping experience.
As for the lead up, they should have had pumps, blowers, shit I’ve seen events fly in helicopters to hover over the ground to blow and evaporate water. Tons of people with squeegees pushing water to collection spots. If you can’t get rid of all the water, then at least congregate it into places and then just rope those sections off. They could have literally just brought in a ton of plywood to cover paths as cars entered. Pain in the ass and slow but completely doable. Also, literally read this is what volunteers also used to get out. Gravel, dirt, sand, etc.
I guess I look at it like this: we’ve seen shitty management over the years and for whatever reason, this year seemed to have a lot more data points that point to mismanagement. The apps not getting updated, lack of staff, wristbands not getting sent, etc. they’ve also had enough rainy events over the years to know issue areas (clearly they felt the need to build a “bridge” over the which ditch - I’d argue it’s poorly thought out and designed but it was a priority). I didn’t see any real activity in any of the pictures or videos that pointed to any of this effort. Maybe they had some but based on the stuff I didn’t see, it didn’t seem like a big effort.
Not yelling at you, but most of my job is strategy and planning work for a small company so it’s extremely frustrating watching a company worth 20B whose focus is planning and running events not being able to, you know, plan and run an event.
Didn't think you were yelling at me. I agree with some of your ideas here, as had previously been mentioned.
I don't think that the helicopters, giant fans, squeegees, or the like were a solution to this situation. I also doubt that it made sense to them financially to install drainage systems in the campgrounds based on how rarely they are used.
I agree with the infrastructure stuff that they have planned for Bush Branch Rd and for paving the tollboth areas. I'm not thrilled with them paving the main roads throughout the grounds, for the reasons that I already mentioned. I don't know enough about trees to know if they would've helped or not. I suspect that they generally do not want to add things that can climbed or that can fall on campers in the event of weather event, especially if they would also take camping spots away. Maybe there's more benefit there than liability, though.
In general, I think that you've highlighted that there are some big picture things that could be implemented over time. Maybe they previously considered them and decided that the cost was more than the benefit. Maybe they just modern day Michael Langs who don't plan for any contingencies. I suspect it's more of the former.
I think that some targeted paving is the most obvious fix for some issues, though it still wouldn't have saved the festival with this year's conditions. The real problem with the walkways is that they need to be usable for cars Tuesday-Thursday & Sunday & Monday and for foot traffic Thursday-Sunday. It's a tough balance. Wood chips, maybe? Is that something that can be done in an environmentally friendly way?
“ We are supposed to be there today “ is the only thought running through my mind since I woke.
Yeah, I'm going to be doing that all weekend. "Oh, I should be dancing to Tame Impala right now." "Oh, this is when I would have been seeing Brittany Howard." "Oh, cool, Run the Jewels would be playing at this point."
would/should they do another live from home thing? maybe unarchive some better sets, old Primus sets, tames set, etc. or would people just be more sad?

Fuckin' hurts, man.
At this moment the first shows would be starting. I'd be sitting outside one of the tents thinking to myself "huh I really wasn't planning on seeing this artist but I'll see what this is about".

I’d be at camp convincing myself I didn’t really want to see the first few acts on my schedule so I could drink more
Made it to Nashville. Going to The Sword tonight; I’m excited because they were one of the first metal bands I ever liked (even if it’s been a long time since I listened to them). Seems like no one else is doing shows this weekend which sucks. It’s extremely disappointing considering that Nashville is famously a city where no live music ever happens. :/

Welp. After moping around my apartment drinking my beer exchange beers and eating waay too much cheese, I’m gonna go see Gogol Bordello tonight and let out some of this pent up energy. Still bummed about Roo but this should help..

Normally at this point I'd maybe just be getting to centeroo to poke around. Instead I'm at this short order Mexican place in Denver eating enchiladas. They have a tv here just showing cute pets and one speaker playing loud christian pop music.

If I was actually at the festival at this very second, I'd be trying to make eye contact with my old college buddy who works sound for Joy Oladokun and distract him while he's working. So many fun opportunities missed

Wow they’re getting absolutely roasted for this. Everyone is mad that they’re charging for tickets. And lots of people seem randomly mad that it’s not Glass Animals for some reason.

Enchiladas were good though would return.
Which place?
la bocaza mexican grille. i'm staying up near the venue.
The Sylvan Esso WITH show feels like it should be the closing show of the 3, but I assume it will be Sylvan first, Phoebe last. Show starts at 7, so I'm curious if they'll just get an hour each or what.

To be fair, it would be insane to pay to see Glass Animals
