I'm pretty sure it's not the same people. Bill Donabedian founded both, but he sold Bunbury to PromoWest Production out of Columbus years ago. Promowest seems to run a nice operation for their local shows, but goddamn do they seem clueless when it comes to curating a good festival.
I don’t know if it’s a budget issue or they don’t know how to make a good lineup, but my lord. One of us could probably do a better job.
Likely both. I'm mostly guessing here based on extremely limited interaction with them, but I think their budget is tight and they have a small in-house team that's a bit out of touch. They seemed like middle aged butt-rockers mostly guessing what kids are into based on radio play and Spotify numbers. I remember listening to a radio interview when they booked Tame Impala in 2015 where they were basically like "Yeah we try to balance the classic stuff with current stuff, like the band Tame Impala is one that an intern told us we had to book!" which was hilarious, Tame pre-headlined Coachella that year.
As a Cincinnatian, it baffles me that Bunbury has such an active forum while Forecastle does not.
I seem to remember Bunbury actually promoting the forum on social media at one point, so that probably helped. But yeah, this festival has become an embarrassment, I really hope the city supports Homecoming.
I’ll be there. I went to Bunbury once for one day, and it was an absolute shit show. Poor sight lines for the main stage, massive lines for food and drink, the wifi didn’t work which meant the ATMs and card readers didn’t work. I swore I would never go back unless the lineup simply blew me away. Fortunately, it has gotten progressively worse each year since.
The first Homecoming was really well done. I’m looking forward to this one as well.
It’s actually impressive that there isn’t one act here I would want to see.
I never mind seeing the Avett Brothers, and I wouldn't mind seeing Cake once, but yeah.
I sort of halfway considered Bunbury because Nelsonville are taking their time releasing a lineup, and it's nice to change things up sometimes. But this settles it - I'm going to NMF, which will be enjoyable and relaxing even if the lineup doesn't perfectly suit me. I strongly encourage anyone who is disappointed with the Bunbury slate to at least investigate Nelsonville. Same weekend, not too far from Cinci (Hocking College, near Athens), beautiful setting with cheap on-site camping, and always a great, laid back atmosphere.
I wonder how a large festival would do in Ohio, with a big, deep, diverse lineup. I don't know what site options we'd have, with enough infrastructure to support 40k-50k people, or more. With a good enough lineup it should sell enough tickets and draw from outside of Ohio, regardless of whether it's held near Cinci, Ashtabula, Toledo, or somewhere more central, no? I'd LOVE something like Bonnaroo that I didn't have to drive 8-10 hours for.

Lost Lands draws 35k and it's right off of I-70 between Columbus and Zanesville. I think a multi-genre fest in that location could have a similar draw. Great highway access for people coming from the east and west.
"My Chemical Romance - MCR had been planning a reunion for awhile, and Promowest contacted them around September. They signed a contract to play Bunbury in late November but after the success of their first reunion show started second guessing their bookings. On Jan 15th, they backed out of the contract and cancelled their Bunbury performance." My guess is they did this for a lot of festivals this year

this would explain the MCR logo popping up on the boston calling site among other fests.
I like how this Bunbury thread has become a thread about all the festivals that aren't Bunbury.
That's essentially what the Bee's Knee's forum has become for a lot of us regular posters. This lineup broke me.
I went to Forecastle for the first time last year and it completely blows Bunbury out of the water 12 times over.
Wonderbus, which was a first year festival right off OSU's campus and was maybe a 4th the size of Bunbury in terms of size of land, completely kicked Bunbury's butt when it comes to every metric by which you would grade a festival on.

I went to my first Forecastle in 2014 and my first Bunbury in 2015. It was so glaringly obvious how much better AC is at this stuff that I never had any desire to go back to Bunbury. I thought Parking Lot Midpoint was a far more enjoyable experience than Bunbury.
