What are all of your thoughts on challenge vaccine trials? On one hand it is incredibly risky but the argument could be made it would save more lives if it works. Especially with how America is doing nothing
seems like we are late enough into Vaccine trials that the cost benefit isnt really there. Its already Phase 3 of the vaccine trials, my understanding is that this part will take something like 3 or 4 months, and if it goes as planned then the vaccine is going roll out right after that.

I can’t find how long challenge trials take but if we can get a vaccine a whole month (complete guess) earlier I could see good faith arguments about the trial. But I understand that I know nothing about the matter and just because something sounds good anecdotally doesn’t make it right

I think they are specifically looking for southern more hit cities for this Phase 3 trial so you are already kinda getting a challenge trial in a way.

Less people are needed for a challenge trial so less intentional exposure. It’s also faster
I’m just asking because this is something I feel like I should be against but when I think about the details I see great potential for it to work and I want to understand it so I’m not blindly supporting the wrong thing when the stakes are so high

It’s really tricky. We have done it before, but for diseases that had a rescue drug. We have no such drug for COVID, so the WHO is split on whether to try it. And there is a real question at this point on whether it’s worth it now. With several vaccines in phase three clinical trials, it’s doubtful a challenge vaccine trial, would save us much time. Not enough to justify the possible PR nightmare if it goes south. That would be an anti-vaxers wet dream. We don’t need to give them any ammo.
They have had a lot of people sign up for the challenge trial though, if they decide to go through with it. My hat’s off to these folks. They are crazier/stronger than I am.

I am slightly uncomfortable with this concept, but if consenting adults want to participate in valuable research, who am I to stop them? I wish no one needed to be intentionally subjected to this virus but this is the only way to quickly verify the effectiveness of a vaccine. The compensation they receive is probably a joke though, while the drug companies do this in hopes of striking it rich. The "warp speed" fast-tracking of these vaccines is concerning, because it really necessitates challenge studies, no?
I did a few drug trials a while back, for a few reasons: existing drugs didn't work very well for me, the free checkups and ancillary care were attractive because I had no insurance at the time, I like science, and $50 a pop for 1-2 hour visits helped. I have no regrets but I hope challenge participants get paid way more than I got for regular phase II/III trials since their potential risk level is gravely serious.
Supposedly this kid got suspended for this picture.
I just saw her on CNN. She had rebuttals for two or three of the rules they say she broke but one was a more general BS catchall about sharing to social media. She seemed okay with the consequences though because she felt people should know what was going on at school. Smart kid, and she should consider the doors that good private schools can open.
Oh my goodness. Vanderbilt just sent me an invitation to participate in the Moderna phase 3 trial. And if I do so, that is all I can say about it. Tight restrictions on discussing it on social media.

one issue i've seen raised in scientific circles is that the risks of these aren't just related to the vaccine itself; a failed trial (or negative health outcomes) could severely damage public trust in vaccines/empower the anti-vaxxer wingnuts.

A couple districts here have temporarily gone full online because of high numbers of teachers and staff having to quarantine before classes even start, and then parents are protesting because they want their kids doing in person classes goddamnit.

First coworker in quarantine due to her father testing positive. He drove her to the airport close enough to the test that she's taking herself out of public. He is hospitalized because of dehydration and a vitamin deficiency. He actually had to go to two hospitals because the wait at the first was too long. I haven't actually been in the same room as her since March, so I've got that going for me.

I've hear it's getting bad over there in Knox county. Davidson county is getting better. But now everyone is sending their patients to our overrun hospitals.

Her dad actually lives multiple counties away. There's just no hospitals in between there and Knox County. Not sure about the dynamics in Davidson, but rural counties jumping in cases will cause Knox hospitals to get hammered.
