It seems like there's more hysteria at this point then anything substantial. People are still going to gather in places. People are still going to have to leave their homes and go to work. Cancelling events is only going to upset people and the world economy. Until 60,000 people have died like the regular flu on average kills, then there's no reason for panic

This isn't about stopping the spread. It's already happened. This is about slowing it at this point. And considering our government is telling the public that they already stopped it, it is contained, and that the WHO stats are wrong (with no evidence at all) I think states and companies doing whatever they can to help is a smart move.

Is this a real post or a copypasta?
My favorite find from this topic on Reddit: “ I get that. I really do. But I also can’t help but think that this thing is going to spread widely before we ever get a vaccine regardless of what we do. Hell, it’s probably already spread far more than we are aware since many people have mild symptoms and we’re lacking in testing kits. So yeah while I don’t wanna be personally responsible for spreading the virus I also feel that it’s likely going to be pretty futile no matter what. Is that selfish? Sure, probably. But I can’t help the way I feel. Obviously I can understand why people think it should be canceled, and if I wasn’t going I’m sure I wouldn’t feel as indignant. But I’m not sure if I would feel that we need to shut down the country for months either. And I know music festivals aren’t the country, but why not airports? Sports? Theme parks? What’s the max capacity we will allow? Idk... I’m no expert but it doesn’t seem like this is exactly the Black Plague or anything.”
God dammit...Here's hoping other festivals don't go this route. This is all too premature, with companies worrying about liability more than anything right now.

Can a festival be held financially liable for an outbreak? I'm a bit clueless here, but I was under the assumption that this had more to with PR than liability. I imagine no one wants to be associated to the headline that reads "Coronavirus outbreak following X festival".
It’s not just a PR issue. The medical community can not withstand a huge outbreak at once. One of the things that will help the most is if we flatten the epidemic curve. The best way to do that is containment. Best method of containment? Suspension of all public gatherings.
Believe me, I’m not happy about it either. I have tickets to three festivals and quite a few shows. But as a health care professional, I’m realistic about our ability to contain this thing. And I am seeing first hand the panic that it is causing.

I haven’t heard that the WHO numbers are wrong, but what I do find extremely misleading is the fact that we are shown the number of cases and deaths constantly. Both of which are obviously going to rise. However, they don’t show the actual amount of active cases. (Meaning they aren’t actively reporting the number of true cases by subtracting everyone that had the virus that is no longer showing symptoms) I’d be far more concerned if the amount of active cases continued to rise in this country at an alarming rate and nobody was getting better, but the gross reality is that isn’t the case, and to make headlines the reporting being conducted always opts to put the bigger number up there because that’s how you drive traffic. I obviously want people to be safe, but this seems like an insane over reaction in my opinion and I’m a fucking Risk Manger. The cost being allocated to control this risk is mind blowing for the true impact it’s having in the United States. But we live in a world where bad press can sink your stock price in the matter of seconds so I get why it’s going that way.
What confuses me is we don’t even bat an eye at the amount of gun violence in this country which is killing far more people than this. We don’t just stop having events because someone crazy may have a gun. We take extra precautions to ensure that we are prepared for such a matter. It’s the same thing here in my opinion. People should be aware and wash their hands, and those that are higher risk should probably take even more precautions until things calm down. It’s really no different than those living in higher risk crime areas taking extra precautions. Not trying to be insensitive because you’re allowed to feel however you feel, and maybe I’d feel different if I had children of my own. I will say that it’s very unfortunate that this moved through an assisted living center, but in reality this may not even kill 100 people here in the US. However, the way it’s being sensationalized will impact 10s of millions of people financially and that’s a fact. Not saying that human lives don’t matter because they absolutely do, but at what cost? We literally may see a trillion dollar loss in America for less than a hundred lives at the end of the day after this is all over. That to me is insane.
And now for a completely useless bit of info. Don’t expect to graze on samples at Costco anymore. Kroger is suspending all sampling of food products and I imagine Costco will as well.

Saw that Starbucks has suspended its filling of customers' travel mugs today too.
Obviously understand the cancellation, but really really bummed for all the Austin spots/businesses/workers that lean on sx to stay afloat. Hoping they still get a decent enough uptick in traffic this month.

Yes, people are still going to go places, and people are going to die from COVID-19. That's a fact now. The sheer numbers are not actually that impressive so far, you're right about that, but the death rate is scary - 2-4% or so (depending on who you ask, less if you go on presidential "hunches"), versus something like 0.1% or less for the flu. That's a big difference. Both skew worse for the elderly, but COVID-19 is killing older folks at a much higher rate than the flue normally does. There's a caveat here - many COVID-19 cases are mild, and it's new, so it has therefore probably been under reported (the lack of available tests hasn't helped), but on the flip side we really don't know yet to what degree the infection rate will change with the seasons. Maybe it goes away when the weather warms up, but we don't know.
I'm not usually someone to overreact, and doom-and-gloom preachers are normally too beholden to the moment, but I can't help but feel that this is a serious global event. And despite the dumbass at 1600 PA Ave. saying a vaccine is a few months away, the CDC experts have said it is more like 12-18 months away from human trials, so it's going to be longer than that before we have one available. So far it looks like this coronavirus probably won't go all bubonic plague on our asses and have an impact on the total world population, but there may be a second strain already, and containment efforts near the source have failed.
I'm not suggesting it's time to panic - clearly it isn't; this isn't like ebola going global. But it's easy to see why folks in positions of responsibility are choosing to err on the side of caution. Festivals still months out need not make a decision yet but we have to cut them a little slack if they decide to sit this year out. We've got Melted coming up next weekend in Columbus, OH and I'll be disappointed but not shocked if they cancel it. Columbus officials just cancelled most of this weekend's Arnold Classic (yes that Arnold), a renowned annual fitness expo, show, and bodybuilding competition that the city has hosted for a long time. I wish I'd paid the extra $20 to make my Airbnb refundable, but I'll understand if C'bus officials decide they don't want a dozen bands from around the country and a bunch of folks from around the state coming into town right now on their watch.
This used to be more common. Parents would have their kids sleep in the same bed when one of them got something like chicken pox just to get it over with for the whole family. For literary reference read the The Great Brain series of books 😀
Idk where this idea that the weather matters came from? It’s summer here and there’ve been like 30+ cases reported in Sydney. It’s not winter everywhere, and it’s still spreading. 🤷🏻♀️
