This thread will serve as a space for a collection of "primer" playlists that serve as introductory points for that one band/artist who you've been "meaning to check out" but just haven't quite gotten around to yet. Given our collective music knowledge, playlist curation ability, and love or arguing about insignificant minutiae, I think this could prove to be a useful resource (or at minimum, a fun way to waste time).

Here are 99 essential Neil Young tracks. I sequenced the playlist to move from songs that are popular and easy to enjoy, to ones that are more “difficult” or fan favorites.
Here’s how I made it:
The playlist starts with Neil’s hits, Heart of Gold, Harvest Moon and other broadly popular tracks.
Then the playlist moves on to his “Ditch” sound. After Neil found huge commercial success with Harvest he famously steered his career “into a ditch” and recorded a series of down and difficult records, known as the Ditch Trilogy. I didn’t stick to just those records and included songs I thought showcased then melancholy that defined that era. I think this is Neil’s best work.
Then the playlist moves into Neil’s live jams, generally featuring Crazy Horse. These are the songs that earned him the “Godfather of Grunge” title.
Finally I have deep cuts. Songs I enjoy that don’t neatly fit in the other three categories, or are alternate takes of those other songs.
Here are playlists for each of the 4 subgroups that make up the full playlist

I’d be up for doing a rough draft playlist for Frank!
Your lineup playlist was my primary motivation for asking actually, so that works out well. Thanks!
I was wondering if that might have been what brought it up. I'm happy to hear it sparked an interest!
Here's my rough draft playlist. I'm happy to have any input or suggestions. I stuck mainly with studio stuff because the live recordings can get more rambling.

Added those three to the OP. I think having a chronological playlist works a lot better for some artists than others, and I think it works perfectly for Nick Cave (in particular, puts the most recent few albums into context).
Also excited to dig into the Zappa playlist!
Dad Dog I really only know Court of the Crimson King for King Crimson, so I'd probably check out one for them

I like doing chronological. I also have done a lot lately set up for the jqbx battles that I have a formula for. I've done so many I can bust them out quick or maybe even have one done.

Ha, so I didn’t actually read the OP until just now. I can trim this Neil playlist down to the appropriate length next time I’m in front of my computer.

I tend to make longer playlists as well. I already saved your long one, I'll defnitely listen to it at some point.

I think having longer playlists is cool as long as the "entry point" songs are at the top. Very much not a stickler for OP rules.
Also thinking people could just submit a playlist for any act they feel like they have an expert knowledge of even if no one specifically requested it. Would build up our library quicker that way

I’ve listened to the big songs from Billie Holiday and Etta James but if anyone knows either of them well I’d love to do a deep dive. And Ella Fitzgerald
