This one is a little tricky. Their catalog is like Radiohead’s in that if you ask 10 people what their favorite songs are you’ll get 10 different answers. I consider myself a fan but am by no means an expert so feedback more than welcome.
I did a list of about 30 songs. The first 10-15 are the ones that are both fan favorites and mainstream popular. What’s the Frequency Kenneth, Drive, Man on the Moon, Nightswimming.
After that I mixed in some of their bigger hits, which I’m personally sick of but thought needed to be included. End of the World, Losing My Religion, Stand. I also put my personal favorite Electrolyte in this section, although I don’t know how popular this song is overall.
And the last few are a few of the remaining fan favorites and live staples I couldn’t bring myself to cut. Gardening at Night in particular is a cool song in that section as it’s off their debut EP and is way tighter than a song an a debut EP should sound.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

yeah it’s been a while since I did this. Would add Maestro too.
I'm of the personal belief that License To Ill Beastie Boys are easily the worst Beastie Boys so that's also clouding my opinion here.
Needs way more Ill Communication IMO. Also more Hello Nasty.
I wanted to make something easier to listen to for her so that’s why I added the hits from Ill. I also love that album. It’s so obnoxious and loud and fun. She’s Crafty is actually one of my fave Beasties songs.

I wanted to nitpick to be a vindictive ass (😀) but this is a good playlist, especially for a primer. No glaring omissions that aren't just, as you said, based on individual fandom.
Upcoming Shows: 4/19 - Alvvays @ Bogart’s 4/21 - Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band @ Nationwide Arena 5/15 - They Might Be Giants @ Madison Theater 6/2 - Pigeons PPP/Andy Frasco/Dogs in a Pile @ MEGACORP Pavilion 6/5 - Pixies/Modest Mouse/Cat Power @ Andrew J. Brady Center 6/13-6/16 - Bonnaroo 7/25 - Foo Fighters @ Great American Ballpark 7/26 - Jerry Harrison & Adrian Belew: Remain In Light @ Bogart's 7/28 - Brett Goldstein @ Taft Theatre
How does one narrow down 25 years of listening into a 90-minute playlist?
(Edit: I clearly don’t know how to embed a playlist into a comment.)
Nothing off Mermaid Ave. Vol 3 ? I dunno if I'd have picked Radio Cure from YHF over I'm Trying to Break Your Heart or I'm the Man Who Loves You or Heavy Metal Drummer for a primer. Otherwise I think it's pretty good, especially for only 90 minutes.
You can’t pick a bad track off of YHF, so I certainly wouldn’t argue against your suggestions, especially if I were going for more of a “greatest hits”.
I admittedly have listened to Mermaid Ave III the least of all Wilco albums. Even as I put this together, I thought, “Surely, no one will call me out for skipping Mermaid Ave III.” Busted.

i'm also a non-expert REM fan, but i think this playlist is solid.
this is way to crude of a division, but if i were to try and cut REM into two different eras it would be the "scrappy college band that is way better than they should be" era and the "alternative adult contemporary that is way better than that sounds era". the first era is exemplified by "radio free europe", the second era exemplified by "nightswimming". so that's my two song REM primer.

when i was a teenager in the 90s i spent all my time hanging out on the porch of a coffee shop, smoking cigarettes and listening to a friend of mine play "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" over and over again on his acoustic. I was born in 1981 but don't call me a millennial.
Out of any of these i ever end up making I hope this one gets listened to if you dont really know against me. Theyre one of my favorite bands and I think one of the best punk rock bands ever

Bob Dylan
Tried to keep the length somewhat reasonable; dude has a lot of classic songs (also I maxed it out at 3 songs per album to try and keep things more balanced). Overall I'd say it's probably 70% classic-era Dylan, 20% stuff from Time Out of Mind and after, and 10% other random things from the long interminable period in between.
Let me know how I screwed up! (I intentionally left off Blowin' in the Wind and The Times They Are A-Changing' because I figured everyone knows those two already)

About the only quibble I have is that there's nothing off Shape Shift with Me. It's not my favorite album, but there are still some good songs on it. Also, I would have had White People for Peace, but that's just because it's one of my favorite songs; I wouldn't consider it an essential Against Me! track.

I did a Parliament-Funkadelic Playlist here. The two bands were both a collective of the same musicians that were led by George Clinton. Funkadelic was more psychedelic and influenced funk and Parliament was more commercial, R&B influenced funk. Some songs were recorded by both "bands" or songs were borrowed and reworked for the different iterations. Throughout their career they had all sorts of licensing/contractual issues and eventually began recording music under different names such as the P-Funk All Stars or Geroge Clinton solo in the 80's. The P-Funk collective developed a mythology and their songs often included recurring characters, a motif of "Funk" as a theological/cosmic entity that broadcasts from the mothership (and later, atlantis) and the struggle between Starchild (the connection to the funk mothership) and Sir Nose, who is devoid of the funk.
Due to licensing issues spotify doesn't have all their albums (notably Funkadelic's one nation under a groove and Parliament's debut Osmium) but I think this is a pretty good primer for the core Parliament-Funkadelic sound.
