that's interesting. i would think he would've left the rights to his kids.
but assuming the estate tax will increase in the future, maybe it's the right move. the kids might've ended up having to sell the rights themselves in order to pay the tax. and dylan has six kids, what a fucking mess that would've been.
He posted on Instagram saying he was selling features for $350. People literally talked to him over the phone, paid him, and he ran off with their money. Now he’s saying he was hacked

got confused and for a second here thought you were talking about Bob Dylan. would be awesome for Dylan to scam people out of features for $350/pop after selling his catalog for $300 million.

300M for any artists masters just seems so high. Are they really making something like 10-20M a year off of synchs and streaming?
It’s publishing not masters, right? I think that’s a reasonable number, although a little higher than I’d guess. Prince’s estate was valued at $200 or so I think. Dylan probably has a similarly large trove of unreleased music as well as a somewhat larger degree of fame.

Yea was thinking the same thing with the kids. It would be a huge burden to have the responsibility to manage and with all the heirs I would imagine a giant headache. There's a podcast about celebrity estates I listen to that talks about these exact problems.

The only way 7 mil made sense to me was if that's what it cost to get Daft Punk to show up, and they didn't, so yeah, Idk. And why is he spending his own money, anyway? Is that typical? Are Pepsi and the NFL that cheap? I've heard the halftime performer doesn't get paid, but it doesn't add up.
7 million investment < 1.3 million per upcoming show date
edit: companies pay over 5 million for 30 seconds during the game. 7 million for 14 minutes of hits is a bargain. I don't know if it has always been this way, but the modern halftime show is equivalent to a commercial at this point.
"Plus, historically speaking, the 15-minute show has resulted in some pretty hefty financial gains for the singers. According to Spotify, after last year’s Super Bowl halftime show, Shakira’s streams spiked by 230% while JLo’s went up 335%. Meanwhile, Justin Timberlake's music sales rose 534% after his appearance in 2018."
I'm just wondering where the 7 went. Did he pay most of that as a bribe to the NFL to be able to play halftime? Because that's a much closer analog to the 5.6 million dollar 30-second ad spot. Ads cost money to produce, also. Bruce selling all the way out to Jeep couldn't have been cheap. Those things aren't 1:1. Getting Sesame Street or Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey and Cardi isn't free. Some of those ads cost 10+ million probably. So is there payola for the Super Bowl halftime show? Is that the answer?

So even at one of the most moneyed up events in the world, artists are still getting the shaft. Typical.
i think it's worth it to give a young upstart artist like The Weeknd the exposure he needs that results in facebook comments like "y does the superbowl book these talentless artists that will go away after their 15 seconds of fame".
