Feeling pretty good about Glass animals showing up on this lineup. They’ve got a gap between May 18 in Berlin and June 14 at Red Rocks, probably also hitting Gov Ball and Roo
I could definitely see them doing a big-ish EDM name as the Blue closer on one of the nights, with (most likely) three guitar-heavy bands headlining.
disclosure is huge and usually headlines festivals they play. the reason for the small venues is bc they dont usually play boston on tours for some reason. imo them or flume seem likely because neither played boston since 2016 and only seem to play festivals in north america for the most part
I suspect that we can rule out Liam Gallagher staying in the lineup after he appeared to be closing Red or Blue in 2020.
He just announced a Wed, June 1 show at the Manchester, UK stadium where his favorite football team plays, with a game capacity of over 50K, and that number's higher for concerts, with fans on the field.
Sure, there's enough time to play Boston Calling, even as late as Sunday night, and make it back in time, but I have to imagine that playing a hometown gig of this magnitude is going to deserve a week's build up on local TV & radio, assorted public appearances, etc. This wouldn't be the case for most performers, but there's no way that he's not going to turn this into the multiple day celebration you see around the Super Bowl and NBA All-Star Game. That's the most Liam Gallagher thing he could do, and his UK stadium run is, in part, a quack you to you-know-who.
So, I can't see him coming over days before to do a one-off U.S. festival gig on Memorial Day weekend, within the context of his commitments around that time.
He'll probably do U.S. festivals later in the summer.

If you look at the website now, we know Haim is billed over RTJ already, which I think makes sense. I think Phoebe should slot under them and over RTJ, in the 5 slot, but we'll see. Some of that is negotiated when booking and not purely popularity, and I could see RTJ pushing for higher billing, given that they headlined Riot Fest and are headlining Shaky Knees. If Phoebe is indeed booked, those 3 have to be the 4-5-6 in some order. I'd be shocked if there was a non-headliner bigger than any of the 3 of them. (If they also got Disclosure, I think they'd fit in the 7 spot. And then Glass Animals could be the 8 or 9.)
Got an e-mail from Boston Calling this morning, with one of their infrequent surveys. There were a couple of questions about which musical genres you want to see in the lineup and the degree to which you like the acts announced so far, but most of the questions dealt with COVID, the importance of comedy and DJs to your experience, how you choose food vendors at BC, etc.
Unlike past surveys, there was no question with a long list of musical acts to check off if you'd like to see them.

Riot Fest, while not as genre specific as Electric Daisy Carnival or Newport Folk, does focus upon a few things and books headliners who wouldn't headline (post-2016) Boston Calling, Lollapalooza, Gov Ball, etc.

I personally can't imagine a situation where it isn't RTJ closing out the Green before Rage

They'll book their usual local rising rock and rap acts, each opening one of the days. If I had to guess, Future Teens will be the rock band and they'll either bring back Cliff Notez from the 2020 poster or book Oompa, who's been getting some national attention lately.
I'm hoping there's room for Pom Pom Squad, Mdou Moctar, and Del Water Gap on the undercard.
Logistically speaking, they'd never put Black Pumas on Blue running opposite RTJ on Red, though.
Plus, if you're booking Geese, you have to book Goose as well, and put them on different stages at the same time. Similarly, have Beach House, Beach Bunny, Best Coast, and Beast Coast all play on the same day within the same 2-3 hour window.

Oh, they'll definitely be doing Red right before Rage, functioning as their opening act like they're doing in arenas next year. If Phoebe or Haim are playing that night, they'll be closing Blue, head to head with RTJ.
I do think, though, they'll bring in their usual big Americana-ish name to close Blue on RATM night.

Leon Bridges would be an excellent addition. He has no future dates in the area and his last scheduled tour date right now is May 19 in St. Augustine.
Leon's availability depends on how far you think they are into the booking process
he only canceled his Boston show a few weeks ago a couple nights before it happened because he was asked to perform at the Emmys. So yeah, he's available, and he conspicuously didn't reschedule, but they might have booked out the top 3-4 lines to the point they can't squeeze him in, either

Because they usually take great care to book very different acts in the closing Red and Blue stage spots. The difference between RTJ and Black Pumas isn't as great as the difference between Weezer and Major Lazer, Brandi Carlile and Logic, or Hozier and ODESZA.

If it isn't, that just about confirms my left field theory that one member of The Strokes refuses to set foot in Massachusetts, probably for legal reasons, and that's why they haven't played here since 2006. Sure, Boston Calling could decide to go in any number of other directions, but if they haven't already been signed as the third headliner, that makes their absence from the Fenway RHCP show very strange.

I wouldn't call Paramore's punk pop >< pop intersection and The National's indie noir anything like each other.
Black Pumas and RTJ may not play extremely similar styles of music, but Boston Calling has a track record creating as much contrast as possible between Blue and Red closers.
Plus, the Black Pumas are more likely to be 2nd-from-the-last on Green or Blue, and not closing Blue or Red. They're not that big yet.
(Also, what makes you think that Black Pumas are appearing on RATM/RTJ day?)
