i think Tyler is really the limit as far as a big sub that isn't headlining, and only bc he was #4 at OSL. anyone bigger / more established as only taking HLer bookings being shoved in as a sub, im gonna raise an eyebrow at.
I agree, Tyler can fit as a sub. I just don't see MBV or VW making sense as a 3. VW have headlined Lolla pretty recently. MBV there's an argument there but they would be a very strong #3 imo.
i think mbv at 3 is fine, even at 4 or 5 would be fine to me
Not to mention, Coachella has no problem billing quality/niche acts higher than their actual draw or popularity. Every year there's at least a couple acts that pop up on the second lines that draw flies compared to whatever trash is in the Sahara at the same time.
I also saw this as 'special' edition of Coachella. Desert Trip was a stacked one-off for instance. That's kind of what I was thinking when potentially drafting six headliners for this.

There are some former headliners who would absolutely be a #2 now, and I won't care about that at all. But yeah, I agree. I don't need strict "realism" as in "keep enough absolute trash like Coachella books", but I also don't want people billing headliner level acts on the third line and shit.

Like JMJ lol.
He was third line, but yeah absolutely. Like MBV would probably play either a sparsely attended Outdoor set or a moderate crowd in the Mojave, but they'd be fine being billed on the second line. Then there are EDM acts who would pack the Sahara but would be a couple lines lower, it's just the way it goes.

he was third line, just got rly good schedule position for his setup
Part of the reason I stayed away from NiN, LCD, Portishead etc. in the first couple of rounds is because they're to big as a sub/Outdoor-closer and only work with a massive act above them imo.

Plenty of people are demoting former headliners it seems. Not promoting Tyler to headline isn’t crazy unrealistic in comparison when the highest he’s been is 3rd on his day

Portishead literally already subbed.
More than ten years ago, they'd be like LCD in 2016 if they reunited. Headliner but a small one.

Portishead would never headline Coachella. if anything they'd be lower now because they're less popular. even in 2009 they were a rare act just like now (not a reunion).

Tyler subbed Firefly post IGOR
And Tame Impala both subbed and headlined for Currents. 3 years ago Frank Ocean was a borderline act and now was the second pick of the entire draft. Time changes perspective on things and I think Igor will get similar treatment. The venn diagram on those artists fanbases is nearly a circle so we know that they tend to stand by their favorite albums
It's definitely a guessing game but I tend to favor billing an artist higher rather than lower because I find myself surprised by how high artists are billed more often than how low they are.
Wasn't Jack a headliner in 2015 but he played the Outdoor while the Weeknd kinda actually headlined?
No, The Weeknd played after Jack Whit as some sort of dance-closing act but.. Normally the headliner closes the mainstage and then it didn't. Def weird yeah.
