big fan of Sound of Metal, love to see all the noms. I haven't seen Judas and the Black Messiah, but would love for Lakeith Stanfield to win just because the guy is amazing. But Paul Raci was fantastic in Sound of Metal.
Still need to see Nomadland but i'm betting i'll love it.
Haven't seen or even heard of Minari, but it's on my list. I'm a fan of Steven Yeun, not because of any of his work, but from his appearances on Conan. I'd be happy with him winning just from that (i'd be a terrible Academy voter).
can't remember if i said this but i watched Sound of Metal with a friend who is a professional ASL interpreter, has multiple deaf family members in his immediate family, and is steeped in deaf culture. His commentary significantly enriched my viewing experience.

Seeing actors like Paul Raci and Maria Bakalova get nominated shows me the Academy voting block is definitely branching out, certainly much more than a similar industry awards program that may or may not have just happened.
I feel like Nomadland is the early favorite to win big with Picture and Director. What do you folks think?
I knew it wasn't gonna happen but Never Rarely Sometimes Always was robbed. Absolutely beautiful, affecting film that deserved at least some attention.
It was cool to see Sound of Metal, Minari, and Judas and the Black Messiah get so many nods though, hopefully they come away with a few wins!
I liked, but didn't love, Nomadland, but it feels like it's already a lock for some of the major awards.

Well normally I would be making my guesses until after the guilds pick their winners, but Parasite kind of messed up that stat last year big time. Other years the Best Pic winner went against the guilds too, but as mentioned I think the voting block is starting to change up. Mank leads with nominations. Nomadland has won most things of importance so far. Nomadland and The Father are the only two I haven't seen yet.

Lol both Lakeith and Daniel being nommed for Supporting is wild. Who was the lead actor then??
I don't really have a problem with category fraud since everyone does it and sometimes there really is a fine line between leads and supporting but saying that your movie doesn't have any leads is pretty silly.

Apparently the studio was campaigning Lakeith for lead actor... because he's the lead by traditional measurements. It was the academy who placed them both in the support category.

Doesn't the studio decide what category they are submitting actors for?
Maybe I'm confusing oscars with another award.

They typically do but I guess the Academy has final say? Dont really know. People are just posting media images of the studio campaigning for him in the lead.
Ensemble movies don't have leads. Like Magnolia, Babel, or Crash or something.
I think it's like asking who's story is it? Or who is the story actually about, and then who is helping tell that story.
But also you often have movies with two leads, which is what I would consider Judas and the Black Messiah. I would also probably consider Steven Yeun for supporting with Alan Kim as the lead in Minari, but whatever.
No, they only have best song nominees perfom. Theyre doing all best song performances in the pre show. Its gonna cut down a good half an hour on the telecast.
Hoooo boy, that ending. Clearly the producers thought Boseman would win.
I think everyone thought that. Did anyone even The Father?
I personally haven't, but have read a lot of great praise, particularly for Hopkins' performance. It seems the average person hadn't seen most if not any of the nominated films this year, despite a lot of them being available for streaming.
That bodes well for cinema business returning and industry not shifting to streaming centered release strategies.
Given the recent box office performance of Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, and the Demon Slayer movie, it seems people are ready and willing to go back to the theaters. That's even more impressive since the former two are available on HBO Max to watch from home.
i appreciated them trying to do something different with the oscars, but i watched the first hour and was super bored. ended up turning it off and watching TV.
i know it's been a bad year, but at least the hour i watched just felt so maudlin and dull, despite them saying tonight was going to be a celebration.
probably shouldn't judge since i didn't watch the whole thing but the internet so.
I'm glad they tried something new. I enjoyed it but I get why a lot of people wouldn't. There were a number of memorable speeches. I do think it was a bad choice to present the lead acting categories after best picture but not because of the Hopkins win.
It is also a shame that the best part of the ceremony was in the preshow.
