I had an idea for a thought experiment the other day, as I was looking over President Biden's cabinet appointments and the world's slowest confirmation process.
What if we took the idea of a Cabinet and applied it to our favorite albums? That is to say, we consider the nominal titles of each cabinet official and put forth an album that fits the vibe of that post, instead of a person who is best suited to run it.
For the past few days I brainstormed the list below. I left out Homeland Security because fuck DHS.
Vice President - Your ride or die. The album that always has your back. Secretary of State - The album that best represents who you are and where you're from to others. Secretary of the Treasury - The richest sounding album you adore. You can take "richest" to mean whatever you want - money, arrangements, cake, etc. Secretary of Defense - The album that makes you want to destroy everything in your way. Attorney General - The album that most makes you want to fight injustice. Secretary of the Interior - The album that makes you feel most connected to nature, the outdoors, or the wild. Secretary of Agriculture - The album you do or would put on while cooking up a delicious meal. Secretary of Commerce - The album you love that's best suited for running errands. Secretary of Labor - The album that you put on to get. shit. done. Especially at your job(s). Secretary of Health and Human Services - The album that most often makes you feel better when you feel like trash. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development - The album that reminds you most of home. Secretary of Transportation - The best driving or traveling album, naturally. Secretary of Energy - The album that you put on when you're working out, or getting ready for a big night out (remember those?). Secretary of Education - Music to write to. Music to study to. You know the stuff. Secretary of Veterans Affairs - The album you love most that's about mental health.
The only rules: 1) Make the albums fit as good each criteria as you possibly can. 2) No doubles. One album per cabinet post, one cabinet post per album.
Have at it. And please, tell us stuff about why you picked each one! I'm interested to hear about your lives and reasons for picking things.
Maybe we'll turn this into a bracket or something after enough people fill theirs out.

Vice President - Your ride or die. The album that always has your back. - Tame Impala / The Slow Rush. i've made it clear over the past year (can't believe it's been that long already), that i like this album a lot, but i haven't made it quite clear how much it hits me emotionally. The themes of struggling with the loss of time, loss of family, and feeling like the world and your life are flying by you without you being able to do anything to slow it down, are issues ive been struggling with for a while, and hit me hard as fuck when the album came out in February. then the world ended in March. time started flying by, while at the same time every day felt so fucking slow. life literally became a Slow Rush. i actually avoided listening to the album from like April-mid June, in that time i lost my dog Brody, and a close friend from high school Garrett, who died in a car accident, and was doing my best to keep my little brothers head together, as he was growing depressed and and acting out in really awful ways during quarantine, all while struggling with this feeling of mass isolation myself. im someone who has grown to prefer to be alone, but it caused me to let my social anxiety fuck with my college experience (i graduated in may) a lot. So i waited until, like, late June when i finally got back to my place in Philly for the first time since COVID hit, and sat down with the lights off, got high as shit, put in my headphones, and just let all the emotions of the past 6 months hit me at once. have never cried so hard in my life from any piece of art (lyrics below in specific broke me). and im a big crier when it comes to movies / tv. its not a perfect album man, i know most of you guys disregard it because its not quite as spotless as Lonerism, or as catchy as Currents, but it was the album i needed this year, and although it fucking sucks i wont get to see it live any time soon, i'm just so grateful to have this piece of work that understands me, my struggles, and lets me know everything is okay.

Just because I know I could spend forever thinking about this, I went through like one of those word association tests and named the first album that came to mind for each description given:

It seems like the Slow Rush wasn't super well-liked by the board, but I thought it was great, and I really wanted/want to see some of those songs live.
I've also thought about the odd coincidence that so much of the album is about the passage time, and the relativity of our experiences with it, in this weird year we are still living in. You have the One More Hour/One More Year diad bookending the thing, the album title, and like half the song titles reference time in some way. I did a little pod on it when it came out, trying to anticipate what their live show would be like, so I spent a bit of extra time thinking on it. The pod was just ok, though lol, and was swiftly made mostly irrelevant, thanks to the pandemic.

I liked TSR but it just didn't live up to how good Currents was for me. Gonna do my write up tonight but Currents will absolutely be on there.
TSR to me just suffered from a few songs being a little too samey with many overstaying their welcome. It's good but I'm not sure how much more reverbed out falsetto synth rock I need from Kevin Parker.

thanks man. and yeah most of my friend group who are all into Tame as much as I am all liked it but mostly thought it was a step down from Currents, but to me it just felt like a natural musical progression of Kevs career in so many ways.

Vice President - Vampire Weekend “Contra”
It's an album I can throw on almost no matter what regardless of mood and it works.
Secretary of State - Ween “Quebec”
Captures most of what I love about music in one frenetic album. Weird, challenging, energetic, sad, and funny. EDIT: and great pop sensibility.
Secretary of the Treasury - Ween “White Pepper”
I just think this record has some of the most beautiful production of any album ever. Super rich soundstage, very midrangey, lots of "breath of life" in the recording.
Secretary of Defense - Knocked Loose “A Different Shade of Blue”
Just listen to the first track, "Belleville", and it will all be clear. Personally maybe the hardest metal record in my collection.
Attorney General - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit “The Nashville Sound”
Great songs, not all political, but it's the most overtly political album Isbell's put out.
Secretary of the Interior - King Sunny Ade “Juju Music”
Just puts me outside, makes me think of the heat and motion.
Secretary of Agriculture - White Stripes “White Blood Cells”
If I'm cooking my wife is probably around and she's a rocker so we gotta be rocking.
Secretary of Commerce - They Might Be Giants “John Henry”
Lots of songs, almost all of them great, in little bite size poppy chunks that would be good for hopping in and out of the car. One of my first "favorite" albums.
Secretary of Labor - Drumcode Playlist
Kind of a cheat but if i'm really in the flow state i need big dumb four on the floor fun, and drumcode always provides that.
Secretary of Health and Human Services - The Smiths “The Queen Is Dead”
Morrissey's lyrics and vocals combined with Marr's guitar can lift me out of almost any slump.
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development - The Temptations “Gettin’ Ready”
If it's something to remind me of home it has to be that motown sound. Generally it's anything that used to be considered "oldies" radio which was always on when I was a kid, and this is the record with "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" i chose it.
Secretary of Transportation - Depeche Mode “Violator”
It's a perfect record, all the song are perfect. It has hits, it has energy, it has moments of contemplation. Your friends in the car will know the hits, everybody can sing along.
Secretary of Energy - Megadeth “Rust In Peace”
Nothing gets me going like "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due".
Secretary of Education - Ben Bohmer “Breathing”
Representative of the Anjunadeep or This Never Happened sound. I hate calling it "deep house" but that's the name they kind of took. Calming, focused beats.
Secretary of Veterans Affairs - Nine Inch Nails “The Fragile”
TDS would also work here, but I think "The Fragile" works a little better since this was when Reznor was actually falling apart, if I have my history right.

When I moved into my first post-undergrad apartment after college, I found myself having to do a lot more meal prep and I could never decide what artist to listen to so I guess I just decided "why not all of them at once?" and since that Girl Talk has been my Unofficial Cooking Artist
It's been one of my go-to's for years now. There isn't anything I don't love about this album. Well, except they haven't made a damn dime off it.
Secretary of State - Slint | Spiderland
Spiderland pretty much screams GL. I'm a pretty quiet dude but I have my moments of laughing and I tend to belly laugh when I do.
Secretary of the Treasury - Beach Boys | Pet Sounds TEENAGE. SYMPHONIES. TO. GOD.
Secretary of Defense - Mayhem | Deathcrush I go a number of different ways with Mayhem but note this version is POS Burzum free. Fuck that guy.
This EP beats you into submission without trying all that hard.
Attorney General - Fugazi | 13 Songs I learned a lot from DC Hardcore. It spoke to me on the issues I knew ("Fuck the -isms") but made me think about things I didn't have a full grasp on how I felt.

I cook in restaurants and you'd think I'd listen to a lot of 60's garage but I tend to listen to krautrock more than anything. The songs are longer and it makes time go by faster.

Avail is home to me. Sure, they sing about Richmond things but it's more than just that. I love them. I'll always love them. I'll forever miss them.

I'm not sure if this album is about depression or mental health but I know it takes me away from stress. It's heartbreaking but truly beautiful. Again, miss this band.

I actually don't see All Day and FTA as similar albums honestly. I mean yes, they operate under the same general idea because that's what Girl Talk does (did?), but All Day lets things stretch out and breathe - for better and for worse - a lot more than on Night Ripper and Feed the Animals. They have really different feels to me as a result.
Vice President - (Doris - Earl Sweatshirt) can go pound for pound with anything. there are certain lines on this album that hit me so particularly emotionally, and the other 90% of the lines are absolute bangers. I've got a VP with no fear of anyone and deep political connections (Tyler, Vince, RZA, Frank, Mac Miller, Pharrell, Bbng, Can).
Secretary of State - (Hail to the Thief - Radiohead) very representative of my political views now, as well as my general state of things, continuing to grow as an adult. lots of anxiety, and rage towards the machine, with moments of levity and beauty layered within. songs warning of double speak, and even a song referencing an endemic(!), make for a sound and firm SoS.
Secretary of the Treasury - (Lateralus - Tool) lush, heavy, overflowing with riches. just an overwhelming amount of sound, everyone's got their moment to shine. like any good Treas. Sec. it's concise, cohesive, and good at math.
Secretary of Defense - (Powerslave - Iron Maiden) our DoD will be led by the Air Raid Siren himself. with songs touching on the air force (Aces High), land combat (The Duelists, Flash of the Blade), and the plight of the sailor (rime of the ancient mariner), it truly encapsulates the armed forces. However, 2 Minutes to midnight and Powerslave, bring a warning of the dangers of nuclear war, and the death that no one can escape.
Attorney General - (S/t - Rage Against the Machine) feel like this is the most self explanatory.
Secretary of the Interior - (Mother Earths Plantasia - Mort Garson) one I had the hardest with, bunch of different things that are nature adjacent, GAS, Bon Iver, Islands by King Crimson. but then I remembered Plantasia, and thought about just the sheer number of people who have played it to actual plants, including the one time I did when I started my herb seedlings. did my peppermint grow with such fervor because of Plantasia? idk, prove it didn't.
Secretary of Agriculture - (Everybody Knows this is Nowhere - Neil Young) could anyone else really lay claim to Sec. Ag? Long crunchy jams for long crunchy bakes. Cinnamon girl? Yes queen. Chopping veggies to the percussive sounds of Neil Young slugging along to Cowgirl in the Sand? Yes please. Farm aid crowd lends their support to our cause.
Secretary of Commerce - (And All that Could Have Been - NIN) "errands" the key word for me here, I ran this CD to dust. songs I can sing along with, high or low energy depending on the task at hand. some songs could be stretched into commerce, Starfucker lol, and Trent is a hot commodity.
Secretary of Labor - (Remission - Mastodon) from the first notes of a tyrannosaurus rex attacking you, this album is all effort. Crusher Destroyer > March of the Fire Ants > Where Strides the Behemoth > Workhorse is labor incarnate.
Secretary of Health and Human Services - (Meddle - Pink Floyd) just a beautiful album, and was almost my VP. Fearless is the all time spirit lifter, for so long of my life, and Echoes is the all time get lost in a track. both songs are staples of my life and have been there every time I need them.
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development - (The Singles 69-73 - Carpenters) struggled with this one, what's the definition of home, when is the definition of home. but I went with home as growing up, being with my mom. any def leppard album could've worked, journeys greatest hits. but I think this album hits a certain point, singing with my mom, songs she grew up with. that's "reminds me of home".
Secretary of Transportation - (Day of the Dead - Various Artists) aside from the gargantuan length which covers many miles, the album features many songs covering transportation: Cassidy, Black Muddy River, New Speedway Boogie, Shakedown Street, terrapin station, ship of fools, truckin, going down the road feeling bad, wharf rat, I know you rider.
Secretary of Energy - (Nonagon Infinity - King Gizzard) literally a non stop ride with the right amount of harmonica to get the blood gushing. the perpetual machine that is nonagon is the clear choice. plus with all those members, they'll have no problem filling out the bureaucracy.
Secretary of Education - (The Shining - J Dilla) speaking from personal experience this was a no contest. Mr. Dilla got me through many a night, and to reward his help for my subpar grades, he gets a cabinet position. So Far to Go might be one of the songs I've most listened to during school.
Secretary of Veterans Affairs - (Master of Puppets - Metallica) Perfect album for VA, anti war, touches on mental health. Really any of the big 4 US thrash could go here, but going to go with the most classic, most on the nose, and the album with Orion.
