Kinda weird since teams could become ineligible over the course of the season by making the playoffs.

I don’t care that much about being regular season champions, but the Saints’ sweep of Tampa Bay in a year they won the Super Bowl is unprecedented. Oh wait, we did that in the 2002 season too.

No. He was talking about bragging rights (which you may note was quoted in bold). Another bragging right is the series which we lead 37-21.
What we did get in 2003 was the ire of Jon Gruden. He brought it up again a couple years ago on MNF as something that will always be under his skin - the idea that a team could go 14-2 and then win the super bowl. But said team couldn't figure out a way to beat "those New Orleans Saints."
