TLOP was an event (ULB on SNL was a thing, the album probably doubled TIDAL's subscribers/trials) and is underrated overall imo. The tour was a big deal too, although I preferred the Yeezus show.
TLOP was the first Kanye album that wasn't a special event, and none of them have been since.
hard disagree. as annoying as they were the many delays and public edits to the tracklist built a ton of hype imo.
First album without huge singles and it didn't change the face of music like every album before it (besides LR maybe). You everyday person barely even knew it dropped. It seemed influenced by a bunch of other shit as opposed to being the thing that set trends like CD, Graduation, 808s, Dark Fantasy and Yeezus all did so clearly.

I think you guys hangout with people that give you a slanted view of whats culturally relevant based on your votes for Sound of Silver in the late 2000s pop indie bracket.

Every day of my senior year of high school after it came out was filled with people playing Famous and Father Stretch My Hands

I think it was an “event” when it came out. There was literally an event and tons of hype. But agree it was his least essential album, arguably his first non essential album

It kinda set the tone for Kanye no longer being appointment, outer space expectations, listening.
But I think LoP was just suuuuuper fucking hyped and enjoyed by his new wave MBDTF stan fanbase. The massive Camp Flognaw cult that was formed in the years leading up to it. But for normal people it was just like "wait why is panda on here? and I guess Father May Stretch was like the 16th biggest banger of the year maybe."
Whereas again everything before was earthshattering shit that became a staple of music history.
lol yeah idk that ULB was even a single, Famous, FSMH 1, FSMH 2, Fade all charted, Famous charted higher than skinhead and that was the first single from Yeezus.
