Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
So, Bonnaroo is partnering with some NFT creator to make several unique items to celebrate the festival.
I find it deeply hypocritical and frankly irresponsible for a festival that has put such significant efforts into environmental and greening initiatives to get on board with a system that uses more energy than some whole states.
The deleterious environmental impact of Blockchain/cryptocurrency/NFTs has been well-known for some time; at this point there's no real excuse for anyone - much less a company - to not have done their due diligence on this front. Carbon offsets are a copout and don't realistically do anything but let people sleep at night.
Please join me in reaching out to Bonnaroo and/or the Bonnaroo works fund to note your opposition to this collaboration
Tens of thousands of cars driving to roo is a bigger issue imo
Which is why Bonnaroo encourages carpooling, shuttle service, etc. It's also an unavoidable fact of life that people will travel.
The amount of energy needed to make on NFT could power an apartment for over a year. It serves no purpose. It has no value. It is entirely avoidable.
Just because there are worse things doesn't mean we shouldn't make an effort to voice our displeasure in something objectively bad and antithetical to the stated goals of the festival.
Why did it need to be an NFT creator anyways. Fully agree on what you're saying in the OP. Also, I don't even think the output of the cars make up for the amount of power cryptocurrency requires to keep shit running.
I'm personally more interested in the long term damage that cars do through incentivizing poor land use, anti bike/pedestrian cities. Etc
You can be invested in this too, it takes almost no additional expenditure of effort. And it's not just NFTs that are the problem; it's everything crypto-related.
Bitcoin uses more energy than the entirety of Argentina.
There are certainly more forms of renewable energy than nonrenewable energy
That doesn't mean that those forms of energy produce more. "In 2019, renewable energy sources accounted for about 11% of total U.S. energy consumption and about 17% of electricity generation."
how though? are they not just digital files? (i totally sound like an old head rn)
Anything transmitted through the internet uses electricity. And then on top of that most crypto is "mined" meaning people just leave their CPU running at 100% nonstop to get bitcoin or other coins. But there's solutions being worked on the cryptospace and mining cannot continue forever as there is only a certain amount to be mined

This is a very simplified explanation but basically for the tokens to be created computers have to do a lot of math which takes a lot of computing power which uses a lot of electricity.

NFTs are making a shit ton of money for artists, which is essentially a straight transfer of money from VC guys to artists. They aren't all bad.
for the initial sale, sure
but once they're out of the artists' "hands"? we have no real idea. no consistent business model there.
but also: no artist with any sort of ethics should be supporting this tech
Slippery slope here. Tons of artists haven't made much of any money in the last year. This is like saying that no coal miner has any ethics, or anyone who works at any level of the oil industry has no ethics. I don't think I agree with that even though in a perfect world, there is no NFT/Coal/Oil industry at all.
but how does that apply to NFT's? because they're often bought and exchanged with Crypto?
The NFT(non-fungible token) is a token that is created and transacted in similar ways to the cryptocurrencies you are probably more familiar with. Most of the popular NFT marketplaces are built on ethereum.
