Shamelessly stealing the core concept from r/indieheads as well as from a post in the Top 10 Songs thread. Essentially, each week we have a new nominated artist and submit/argue about our favorite songs from each. Pretty straightforward and hopefully pretty fun!
RULES: - List your top ten favorite songs by the artist in ranked order, with #1 being your absolute favorite, #2 being your second favorite, etc. Please submit a full list of 10 songs to ensure all votes are weighted equally!
- Listing a song as your #1 pick will give it 10 points, your #2 pick receives 9 points, #3 receives 8 points, etc. I'll tally up points at the end of the week and the ten songs with the most overall points will be our top ten for this week.
- You're encouraged to explore the artist's discography and think about it before you decide on your top ten. The weekly deadline will be Sunday whenever I get around to it, so please have lists in by the end of Saturday and, if you happen to change your mind after listing your 10, quote the original post with your updated changes to make things easier on my end.
- If you missed the chance to submit a list for an artist we've already done, no worries! Go ahead and post your list late if you'd like and your contribution will be added to the overall rankings.
- I'm open to ideas on how to nominate artists, but to me it would seem fair for everyone to nominate one name (first come, first served). You can nominate another name as soon as the initial act you've nominated is finished, and you'll just take your place in the back of the queue (I can track that in the OP as well).
UPCOMING NOMINATED ARTISTS: Jason Isbell (elpingu) Arcade Fire (prickle) Garth Brooks (Teddy) Carly Rae Jepsen (Nathan) Drive-By Truckers (jorge) Nick Cave (sang) The Band (rafinha) Father John Misty (bluebus) Soulwax remixes (pablo) The Beatles (jpbrez) Clipse (Jortles) Wilco (Ambassador) Metric (piratep) The Who (Ellie)
FAKE FANS ONLY (artists who were nominated but received fewer than 3 submittals and therefore are not included in Top Ten documentation): Boards of Canada Fountains of Wayne Joanna Newsom Kylie Minogue Van Morrison Widespread Panic
Alanis Morrissette Animal Collective Aphex Twin Arctic Monkeys The Beach Boys Beastie Boys Beck Belle & Sebastian Beyonce Big Thief Billy Joel Bjork blink-182 Bob Dylan Bon Iver Britney Spears Bruce Springsteen Charli XCX The Chemical Brothers The Clash The Cure D'Angelo Daft Punk David Bowie Def Leppard Depeche Mode Dolly Parton Elliott Smith Elton John Fiona Apple The Flaming Lips Fleetwood Mac Fleet Foxes Florence + the Machine Foo Fighters Frank Ocean Gorillaz The Grateful Dead Green Day Guns N' Roses Gwen Stefani Harry Nilsson Incubus Iron Maiden Janet Jackson Jay-Z Jimmy Buffett Kacey Musgraves Kate Bush Kanye West Kendrick Lamar King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Korn Lady Gaga Lana del Rey LCD Soundsystem Led Zeppelin Lorde M83 Madonna Mastodon Metallica Modest Mouse The Mountain Goats My Chemical Romance My Morning Jacket The National Neil Young Nicolas Jaar Nine Inch Nails Oasis Outkast Paramore Pavement Paul McCartney Paul Simon Pearl Jam Phish Phoenix Pink Floyd Pixies PJ Harvey Portugal. the Man Primus Prince Public Enemy Queen Queens of the Stone Age Radiohead Rage Against the Machine Red Hot Chili Peppers Regina Spektor R.E.M. How are we treating covers and live songs that have been released?
Great question. I think covers should be fair game for sure, and I'm also in favor of limiting live songs to ones that have official releases and that are accessible on your average streaming service.
Anyone have any ideas on how best to address differing live versions of songs? Probably won't be a huge deal 95% of the time, but for something like, say, Phish or the Dead I could see that becoming complicated

I think I can do all of these without too much additional research except for GnR
It's proven quite difficult to get my Radiohead list down to just 10 also: started at 35 and am hitting a wall now at about 15 songs left that are all just absolutely essential

The nice thing about GNR is that they have six albums and an EP. One of the albums is a covers album, one is a live album, and another is Chinese Democracy.

Present Tense was probably 11 or 12 on my list so glad to see it getting repped. Cutting that and Nude was rough

Yeah, I figured I'd get some shit for that on here and know it's considered melodramatic or whatever, but I think lyrically and conceptually it threads OK Computer together, and OK Computer is my favorite Radiohead album. I think it's a pretty great critique of modernity and was my first real introduction into thinking about postmodernism/post-structuralism/critical theory, which all became very important philosophies in my life and thinking. I really love it and would go as far as to say that it makes OK Computer for me.
Sorry for the explanation if this was just a joke/sarcasm...

No, it wasn’t sarcasm. And I agree that it’s a fine song but I just think there are way better songs in what is one of the greatest band’s of all times discography
Probably couldve made one with just b sides but not gonna be that deep.
1 Climbing Up The Walls 2 Talk Show Host 3 National Anthem 4 How To Disappear Completely 5 Blow Out 6 Subterranean Homesick Alien 7 Motion Picture Soundtrack 8 ( Nice Dream ) 9 Lift 10 Sit Down Stand Up
