Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Because there's a thread for every other genre on here except this one. I thought this might be a good place to showcase new country releases we like plus classic country songs and post songs that often exist only on vinyl and on the YouTube videos of those who remember to upload them (most of which I care about are in my Loretta Lynn collection). Anyway, to kick us off:
9/22: Lauren Mayberry 9/22: Basement Jaxx 9/28: Röyksopp 9/30-10/1: Portola 10/5: Violent Femmes 10/11: Blue Hawaii 10/26: Christine and the Queens 11/15: Baroness 12/12: Aqua
I'm interested in seeing where this goes. I rarely discover new country music that isn't on Bonnaroo's lineup nor out of circulation country music from the past so I'm not sure if I'll have anything to contribute.
I've been stuck on Holly Macve this month with the new record dropping. She's more of that singer-songwriter than straight country but she wears the hat well.

I think the mammoth success of Old Town Road is going to lead to a mini-wave of imitators trying to fuse genre conventions from country and rap in a more explicit manner and I'm interested to see how that goes. Case in point: this song from an artist on the Roo lineup this year (which is decently catchy ngl. Doubt I'll be at the set but wish him no ill will)
I work with a lot of MAGAs who occasionally listen to the local country station on the radio out back. So it'll be a nice break to listen to country that doesn't suck.
Though admittedly, I'm probably in the same boat as CDev and won't contribute much outside of 90s songs and whatever's at Roo/Newport.
As far as new releases, not too much has grabbed me this year yet but I did like the new Ashley Monroe album. It's been fairly divisive, but I think its flirtations with hip hop inspired production are really good:

Where TF were you with bubba sparxxx ?
Jk. But one time I was finishing a day on the lake and as we were pulling into the marina there was a dude on his janky houseboat, sitting in one of those generic white plastic patio chairs, obviously wasted, just blasting bubba sparxxx. It was so gloriously red neck.

It’s funny you made this because I recently made a country playlist for myself since I find myself gravitating to a specific type of country. Haha. I added a few songs but have been meaning to add more.
More on topic, the marfa tapes was excellent. Totally different side of Miranda Lambert. Really stripped down, intimate acoustic stuff. Great songs.
this is my AOTY so far but i figured that out as soon as it was announced. it should also be said that Ingram is one of the best country shows i've ever seen. dude tears it up.
Wouldn’t say I’m a big fan of the Marfa Tapes as an album, but it’s very fun and the one-take recordings means you hear a lot of rain, fire noises, and conversations, which is nice. My favorite song was probably “Am I Right or Amarillo” and “Two Step to Texas” but I also liked this “Jolene” flip too:

all over this thread. I like the punk leaning country best. Then the trad outlaw stuff. Cut my teeth on the Bloodshot label out of Chicago. After Jerry died, I deep dove his bluegrass stuff, Old and in the Way etc, plus a ton of Johnny, Merle, George, Waylon, Willie, Hank, EmmyLou, Dolly, Loretta, Tammy, etc. Lucky for me, Americana broke wide open around that time with Uncle Tupelo<Wilc0<Son Volt<whiskeytown<drive by truckers and so on, helping to drive the stake into the lingering heart of corporate country ! Have a good buddy who travels the country scouring old wax for b sides and hardly known funk and country. (And country funk lol) and brings me cheap copies all the time.
Anyone not hip, should most def seek out the excellent Mike Judge cartoon series "Tales From the Tour Bus" season one for wild ass tales of real country outlaws raising hell back in the day'
This dude is climbing the ranks in the footsteps of Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson. One of my first casualties of covid cancellations, he was scheduled to perform in a local punker bowling alley.
Whole album fire.

pretty cliche broad stroke unless I'm missing some Simpson's reference or something ?
Broad, cliched stroke. I do like folk, bluegrass and some outlaw. Some of the new left country is alright too.
I just didn't understand since everything cited so far in this thread is rooted in talent and heart. And the swing you took was already highlighted by John Prine and Steve Goodman in *1971* and performed by David Allen Coe, of all people if we want to talk cliche.
Just about any of the newer country I listen to has the quality that my father would like the first few listens until he realized what was actually being said. See much of the Drive By Truckers' crowd !
I wasn't sure if you were someone who just enjoyed farting in church for the reaction, or actually had something to add.
I don’t fart in church. I was driving and saw the headline. I didn’t read the other posts and just added a jingle. It wasn’t serious, so you probably shouldn’t be offended. In general country has had a lot of different paths traveled over the years. Many of them were pretty bad. Shitkicker and Urban Cowboy fashionista shit were both about as terrible of scenes as anyone could dream up. Toby Keith is pretty terrible. OTOH, country did bring us many great story tellers from the OG radicals and Outlaws on through modern day stuff like Nathaniel, Brandi, Kasey, etc.
I’d say my biggest knock on “country” as a genetic entity is the simplicity of so much of the music. It’s the opposite of jazz and offbeat stuff. I saw Zac Brown Band once. I felt like when they were picking and playing, it was much more intricate than just having a beer in their hand and toes in the sand.
Another knock is who ‘country’ appeals to at a mass level. People don’t have to like it and can seek out alternative formats. But necks are necks.
it seems like it's already achieved great popularity, but it would be remiss to not mention the podcast "cocaine & rhinestones". if you even have a passing interest in the country genre, i could not recommend it enough.

Also, taking an enormous L here because I listened to this today thinking it was an EP of new material but nope, just a repackaging of some Dierks Bentley songs from his last album because one of them was incredibly popular on TikTok. :\

Well. Dierks Bentley having a TikTok smash is not something I expected to hear.
Saw William Clark Green at a tiny bar back home in 2018 and just melted my face off, saw him again before a football game in 2019 and it was equally as awesome.
On the other hand, Koe can throw down but I feared for my life being in that crowd.
