Now we're going to do the best sci-fi films ever. Here's how I chose the films. I went on 5 "all time greatest sci-fi film lists" that had more than 64 films (which were also reputable to me in my own high opinion of film). I made a long list of films that appeared more than 2 times (on any place in the list), then averaged together their rankings. If the average was below 64, I put it on the list, and did that until I had a top 64 film list eliminating all of the others whose score-rankings didn't make the cut.
Here is the alphabetized list of films that will compete:
1. 12 Monkeys (1995) 2. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) 3. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) 4. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) 5. Akira (1988) 6. Alien (1979) 7. Aliens (1986) 8. Annihilation (2018) 9. Arrival (2016) 10. Avatar (2009) 11. Back To The Future (1985) 12. Blade Runner (1982) 13. Blade Runner 2049 (2017) 14. Brazil (1985) 15. Children of Men (2006) 16. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) 17. District 9 (2009) 18. Donnie Darko (2001) 19. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982) 20. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) 21. Ex_Machina (2015) 22. Fantastic Planet (1973) 23. Gattaca (1997) 24. Ghost in the Shell (1995) 25. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) 26. Hard To Be a God (2013) 27. Her (2013) 28. Inception (2010) 29. Interstellar (2014) 30. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) 31. Jurassic Park (1993) 32. Looper (2012) 33. Mad Max Fury Road (2015) 34. Metropolis (1927) 35. Minority Report (2002) 36. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982) 46. Star Wars (1977) 47. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 48. Sunshine (2007) 49. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) 50. The Abyss (1989) 51. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) 52. The Fifth Element (1997) 53. The Fly (1986) 54. The Host (2006) 55. The Martian (2015) 56. The Matrix (1999) 57. The Road Warrior (1981) 58. The Shape of Water (2017) 59. The Terminator (1984) 60. The Thing (1982) 61. They Live (1988) 62. Total Recall (1990) 63. Under the Skin (2013) 64. Wall-E (2008)
Next, similar to the other film brackets I did in the past, I will average together their Rotten Tomatoes critics score and audience score to determine their seeding.
In the meantime, feel free to comment on any films you think are missing and are essential for a sci-fi film tourney. This could easily have been a 128 film bracket.

I'd recommend adding:
Galaxy Quest Godzilla (original, if we're including Jurassic Park) End of Evangelion Space Balls Starship Troopers The Vast of Night The Iron Giant The Mitchells vs. the Machines A Quiet Place Signs Attack the Block Cloverfield Primer Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow A Scanner Darkly
Where are we drawing the line between sci-fi and fantasy?
Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite films ever but Sci-fi doesn't really come to mind when I think of it.

Really? I think there are films that have been mentioned that are debatable but I wouldn't include Eternal in that list.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
To make it simple, I'm going to say no hard fantasy or superhero films. While there is definitely a case to be made as technically science fiction, many of them get deconstructed as their own separate genre. But if we get desperate I may think of adding some.

Removing Guardians?
This is my own thinking, but because a movie is Marvel or comic book territory doesn't necessarily make it "superhero". I admit GotG wasn't on my mind when I was putting together this bracket, but it was on almost every list I peeped at, even the ones that didn't include superhero films. And it's always been more outer space sci-fi to me than superhero.
Anyway, here are the other 64 films. Some of these I really had to dig for, and I'm willing to bet no one on this board has seen all of these. But it'll be fun to do some homework. It'll take me awhile to determine seeding for all of these, so in the mean time, try to find these on streaming or rent on youtube/amazon for prep! (or just be lame and abstain your votes when it is time).
