Don't think i need to declare i voted Phish for this round. IMO they are the best jamband alive today. dead and company is great and i'm thrilled they exist, but Phish is still around and still doing what I've loved about them their whole career: trolling their fans and having a laugh.
IMO while Phish can certainly go to dark places, it's almost always done with a slight smile and a wink. there is a lightness and a comedy to their performance that isn't present in the Dead's music. The weight and tragedy of the Dead is always there. It's a beautiful and joyous weight, because we are all still here and alive despite the heroes we've lost along the way, but it's a weight nonetheless.
having said that what is beautiful about the Dead is their music transcends any individual band member. If music can survive the loss of a giant like Jerry Garcia it can survive anything. But Phish is just those four guys. Once we lose any one of them, that's it. The music will live on in recordings and in other bands covering them, but just by the nature of what they do we'll never have a Phish & Co. type of project.

^^^i should add to the above that's strong a subjective preference thing. i love a lot about phish, love the songs, love the jamming style, love the setlist structure, etc., but its the comedy of it all that puts them over the top for me. it's trey's quote from bittersweet motel that sums it up for me: "rock and roll to a certain extent is bullshit, but music isn't." and you can plug any genre you want in to "rock and roll" there. forms are bullshit and as such it's fun to play around with them, distort them, and make fun of them. but even in mockery you have to take music seriously. phish takes the music seriously, but nothing else is sacred.

Anyway, Dead Co is my vote here. A few years ago this would have been a harder question, but their playing has gotten much much stronger since they started, and that plus setlists that are straight classics gives them the edge. I do give Phish credit for continuing to push creatively, even if the results are extremely inconsistent in my view. They’re still my clear second choice here, and Phish might do 2-3 shows a year that are stellar, but overall I’d rather see DeadCo on any given night.

Its Phish for me. The Grateful Dead are one of the greatest bands of all time. They have classic songs that will live on forever, but we are talking Dead and Co. Saw phish at deer Creek this summer and the dead this weekend in cincy. Dead and Co were fantastic but phish takes the cake for me and it was a lot easier of a vote than I'd like to admit.
