That was Rodrigo or Doha’s award man. Whatever, he seems like a nice guy but I have no idea who listened to that.
The shadow voters who truly determine the winners. Old guard folk who eat albums like that up. How else do you think Steely Dan and Robert Plant won in their respective years.

you keep Steely Dan’s name out of your fuckin mouth
My fandom of Jon Batiste is like my fandom of a bunch of other bands I don't own albums of.
"Oh, they are good and talented and when I've seen them they were great." But I never really did a deep dive or anything. And it was mostly festival sets where it was the most preferred option.
I've been to 2 or 3 Colbert tapings and Batiste and his band are always awesome and fun. And the times I've seen him live at festivals have been great. But I cannot name you a single original song or album.
So I like him but I can't claim being a real fan. When I see his name in a roo superjam or Newport Folk set I am happy.
not to sound like a kid on youtube in 2008 but i just dont understand biebers appeal. he makes bad music lmao.
Otherwise very cool to see Olivia take best new artist and Baptiste winning AOTY is hilarious and reminds me of when Beck won
Its been magnified even more in recent years by how seriously he is taking himself and trying to just sculpt his sound to somehow hit paydirt. He whined about being placed into pop categories last time instead of r&b cause thats the kind of album he apparently made. Yet his label was the one that submitted his material into those categories, so maybe he should talk to the higher ups.
I didn't pay attention to the Grammys at all this year but I'm scrolling through the winners and nominees and...Glass Animals and Japanese Breakfast as "Best New Artist" noms? What the hell is the the criteria for this category?
I know liking Foo Fighters isn’t cool but Hawkins owned that shit. The dude loved doing what he did. He forced you to have a good time at a Foo’s show.

From the wiki:
The official guidelines are as follows: "For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist." Note that this is not necessarily the first album released by an artist; for example; Shelby Lynne won the award in 2001 after having already released six albums over 13 years.

I had the same thought; they were a Thursday Roo act in 2016 and are currently on their third full-scale release. JB is a bit more on the upswing so I can kiiinda understand that one a bit more but Glass Animals has been a major act for quite a bit now.

thats super interesting, thanks for sharing. i've always made fun of the best new artist nominations but never read the criteria. reads kind of like "well they aren't new new, but they are new to us."
Theyve kept tweaking that rule and it still doesnt work like it should. They should make the music being released within the last 2 years to make you new. And if its more about public identity ( having a hit ) then its just gonna be the olivia rodrigos and kid larois which is who they want anyway. So theres no reason to put in glass animals or jb. The Bon Iver win was the one which made people get truly confused.

2015*
Zaba came out in 2014 and Gooey was def getting airplay. So no matter how you slice it, their BNA nom didn’t make sense.
Side note. Where can I watch these performances? The Grammy YT channel just has red carpets and acceptance speeches. J Balvin has his up, but it’s the only full performance I could find.
