end of the day you are still going to be wrong about objective vs subjective here.
you're saying it is impossible to be even partially objective about something's value or rating?
people say "______ is objectively better, but/and/however... [insert subjective opinion]" all the time?
Interested in your response but I think you could say that one album was objectively rated better by critics by using Metacritic or your own compilation method. I know people say the bold often, and I used to all the time and maybe still do on accident every now and then. Sometimes myself "recognizing" an album as being better but "not liking it" as much. Makes no sense. People say there is a difference between a list of your "favorite" albums and your "best" albums. I don't get it. Seems like most of the time people try to find this separation because of albums they know are critically acclaimed but don't find themselves enjoying to that level. I've transitioned to saying "I respect To Pimp A Butterfly more than I like it" As opposed to "TPAB is objectively a 10/10 but I don't like it that much." I don't think there is any objectivity in music enjoyment. Any rating you give an album is yours and yours alone and there is nothing objective about it.
And when you say youre putting your feelings or perspective aside and making a claim about the album's quality... what does that actually mean?
I think you could be objective about impact of an album. How the album was received via reviews or listens or sales or whatever.

I agree with you for the most part. I do believe some people play instruments better than others. Some people rap better than others. Some people write better lyrics. Etc.

Yeah I somewhat agree there, but the degree of difficulty of instrumentation or rapping just isn't going to wind up correlated enough with enjoyment.

Hmm yeah I do agree with most of this... but I think people absolutely can end up ranking something differently on a "best of" list than their "favorite of" list. And by my definition, that can be the difference of a list being wholly generated by use of subjectivity (e.g. favorite albums list) for rankings/value placements vs. something like a "best of" list where, yes, it's still going to be predominantly generated by the author's own opinions and perspectives but might have a touch of objectivity applied as well.
Let me use an example of perhaps the only band I've ever literally run away from a show of (garagelandDave Maynar) Sunn O))) - the audio experience of their shows physically pains me, and that ain't my kind of masochism so I distinctly do notttttt enjoy it--but I still recognize that they're objectively good at what they do and appeal in some very specific and unique ways to people who like that kind of music.
(I love how we can nerdy-debate about p much anything on this lil forum haha)
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Youre Sunn O))) thing just sounds like you get it, and get why others like it, but you still don't like it.
Idk... I just think anyone ranking "best" and "favorite" separately is deeply confused and needs to objectively see a therapist.

is it really that absurd to feel theres a difference between who you consider to be the "best" and your "favorite"? ive always thought that was a fairly valid thought process lol
my most specific example would probably be J.Cole is my favorite rapper (or has been for a while, its a little more of a contest now) but Kendrick is very clearly the best rapper as of right now

Are you saying J Cole is your favorite rapper right now but Kendrick Lamar is in your opinion the best rapper right now? If that is the case, I think that is weird.
Now, I do think you are changing the conversation a little bit by comparing careers of artists where you can talk about amount of awards, sales, cited influence, critical acclaim. It would be easier to develop an objective formula to measure an artists' career - if that is what you are talking about.
But if you are putting accomplishments / careers aside and just telling me Kendrick Lamar is the best person at rapping, I don't think that can be objective. I think Pusha T is better at rapping than Kendrick Lamar and that is a subjective statement.
Admittedly, when the tournament began, I had only listened to MAYBE ten of the albums from beginning to end. In round one, I skimmed a few songs from every album before I voted. By round two, I listened to a few full songs from every album before I voted. For round three, I tried digging even deeper into some albums (including full listens for harder votes) before I voted. I could not understand why we were left with the 8 albums remaining, with the exception of Tyler and Magdalena (which I've listened to repeatedly in the past year).
Today, I gave all eight albums a full and proper listen with headphones. I get it now. They're almost all commitment listens.
EDIT: This is a lie. I just realized I never fully listened to Little Simz. I listened to Low first, loved it, and then listened to a few Little Simz tracks and turned it off.

1, 2, 3, and 4 seed all made it to the semifinals. I think I hit on something with this nominating process given that the top 4 seeds made it this far and the vast majority of the time the higher seeds won in every rounds.
