remebering the time Shea Serrano referred to J. Cole as "like if a pair of Sketchers came to life"
reading that article for the first time, the whole quote is great:
J. Cole as a rapper is like if one of those paint-by-numbers things were a human. He’s like if a pair of Sketchers had come to life. He’s like if one of those braided leather belts became sentient. He’s like the last 30 minutes of a comedy movie where they try to get all serious but mostly just end up saying a bunch of regular-ass stuff. J. Cole does not rap in a good way, or an interesting way, or a challenging way, or a way that exists in any manner other than what it is presented as. If J. Cole wants to make a song about, say, riding a bicycle, he will call it "Bicyclez" and there will be lines in it like, "I always wanted a bike when I was a kid / Never got one / I got one now / Just rode 5 miles on it / Cole!" If J. Cole wants to make a song about the hardships of growing up in the underclass, he will call it "Hardship" and there will be lines in it like, "When you don’t have money / Life is hard / I have money now / Still can’t cover up the scars." That’s what he does. And it’s not good.

"J. Cole does not rap in a good way, or an interesting way, or a challenging way, or a way that exists in any manner other than what it is presented as" is just an absolutely devastating critique
She writes such great pieces of music with a feminine touch, French sensibility and an exploration for world sounds and harmonies
this is an objectively hilarious string of words
haha don't hate I was on the phone with my boss when typing that out. How about she writes and produces material from a French, female perspective incorporating elements of world music and obscure vocal harmonies often with odd key signatures representative of the regions she explores musically?
Hmmmmmm this new Chvrches album is a lot better than their previous effort. I really liked their first two albums a lot but that third one was a stinker. I never gave this one a shot, it’s better than I expected.
It was one of the biggest surprises for me last year! I'd probably call it their 2nd best album. That song with Robert Smith is sooo damn good.

listened to born sinner and 2014 forest hills drive last night. j cole's fine. i still probably won't go to his show. i also saw his 2016 set waiting for lcd soundsystem and wasn't super into but i also hadn't listened to his music. my problem with him is there was always an album out that i liked more than j cole's. in 2013 he had to compete with great albums from kanye, mac miller, chance the rapper, a$ap rocky, drake, earl sweatshirt, run the jewels, danny brown, pusha t, tyler the creator, and more. in 2014 the field was smaller but for my indie/alt rap tastes i was listening to run the jewels and freddie gibbs, vince staples, and open mike eagle before i got to j cole. good kid maad city was really big in 2013 and 2014 while everyone was waiting for to pimp a butterfly too
reading that shea serrano article it seems like he's for a certain kind of young hip hop fan that was around for the album drops. born sinner and 2014 forest hills drive are long albums that have a certain sound and feel to them and i can imagine people getting into them because of how immersive and relistenable they are. there is a lot of rap i prefer over him but he seems to be doing well in his wheelhouse. i respect his grind and he isn't a headliner for no reason

As for J Cole, he never was able to put out an album I fully enjoyed before (just a few songs here and there) but I do really like his newest album The Off Season.
Here's another Bas song he's featured on that I really like
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
Diving into all the electronic suggestions now. Im digging Nora En Pure! Gonna check out Clozee next.
If your liking the house music def check out Dombresky. Seen him a few times, love his energy. Check out his lolla set from last year, its on youtube. Crowd was going nuts every drop
but if you haven’t listened to J.Cole much or at all, i’d recommend Change from 4 Your Eyez Only
i understand a lot of the qualms with Cole but for some reason i still love him and always have, maybe it’s just having grown up with him
however, i’m less excited to see him headlining than i would’ve felt if you told me 6 months ago that he was. it just feels a little weird even as a big fan
Definitely check out Chris Lake, Chris Lorenzo, LP Giobbi and J.Worra
I love LP and dig Chris Lake too -- any sets from Chris Lorenzo or J.Worra you specifically rec?
None offhand for Chris Lorenzo, I feel like he's really been picking up a lot of steam recently, he released the California Dreamin' remix that I feel like has been a staple in every set since it came out:
I've seen J.Worra at Hulaween, I don't see much from her on youtube from 2021, but she's got some Beatport sets that are really good on there:
I'm a big fan of this song, I feel like her music has a late 90s happy house sound to it

A couple other Chris Lorenzo songs:
Also, expect Chris Lake to drop a lot of his, and vice versa. They have a little group together too so I wouldn't be surprised to see them pop up somewhere else too

sometime next week I can make a mix of all the house artists and post it on soundcloud if people are interested, I think its a little more fun to digest house music that way

I know they’ve been mentioned a few times already, but Weval seems like a really good booking. The kind of electronic music that Bonnaroo hasn’t had in like 5 years. I wonder if they would play the other? Doesn’t seem like something for that crowd but idk what their live show is like

EDIT: damn their live show looks so awesome
It seems like it's unclear weather we will get the full band or this live:
Doing a little investigation... it seems like there are only 5 additional Other Stage acts on Thursday. 7 were scheduled in 2021. That makes me feel like they will be on The Other. They are also the lowest name of the Other Candidate acts, meaning they may open it from 7:45 - 8:45.
If Weval end's up on the other, I don't believe that completely rules out drums and shit. In 2018, Justin Jay's Fantastic Voyage opened up The other on Thursday from 7:45 - 8:45 and had the following set up:
Don't know how to investigate any further. Maybe TOSTIE can help.
