My Chem would have been such a perfect "rock" headliner for this fest - for the 90s/00s kids who have disposable income, for the 10s kids that look at them as classic rock, for being unique enough for it to get national hype as the initial reunion shows.
Instead they gave them away to Live Nation so they can sell out 3 nights at a new fest in Vegas. What a strange move.

More like MCR was set to go but then Rage entered the picture and GV ultimately chose then over MCR. IMO, that was the wrong move.

especially odd considering theyre set to headline Firefly, also an AEG fest

It is still too early to tell, but if Phoebe Bridger's success continues to be an upward trajectory and if her next album is even bigger, she could potentially be the next "indie/rock" headliner. In fact, a Coachella headlining bill of Tame Impala, Phoebe, and a hip-hop artist in the latter half of the decade would be great if the former two maintain their status. Bands like the XX, Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend likely missed their shot to reach that status years ago. Honestly, if they did not feel disdain towards the festival, I would want Beach House to get promoted as the next "rock headliner." Apparently, their track "Space Song" went viral on TikTok and their generation Z fanbase has grown. They have more Spotify listeners than Arcade Fire & LCD Soundsystem who once headlined, though I realize Coachella was much more different back then. They have not played since 2016 because of their negative experience that year, so probably not likely anyway. But I can't think of another band from the late 2000's/2010's that is actually deserving of the slot and who appeals to both millennials and Gen Z'ers. They also appeal to both music snobs and casual music fans.

I'm aware that those choices seem like a big stretch, but there's at least one headliner every year that isn't gutter trash and could easily fit on an "old" Coachella bill and if GV doesn't bother grooming any current rock/indie acts to be future headliners then we are set for Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and repeat rock headliners as the non-pop option for the rest of the decade.
“The current state of music doesn’t favor rock bands.” What a load of shit.
Tool’s selling out every arena they play. RHCP are exclusively playing stadiums on their upcoming tour. Arcade Fire just dominated Coachella with their surprise set.
Who cares if rock bands aren’t popular with the masses? Book them anyways. The fest’s goal is to sell out tickets at this point - it’s the only reason pop acts got let in. Now that it sells out regardless of who plays, literally anyone can play.
This makes zero sense for a festival that had Guns N’ Roses as a headliner in 2016. I wasn’t alive when they peaked, but they still played Coachella.
None of these arguments make sense. A music festival books music. You can have anyone play and the fest will sell out. Doesn’t matter if Tame Impala was “the last big rock band.” There are still big headliner rock bands that exist and can headline festivals.
The only reason Arcade Fire would be a 5k draw in 2022 is if they weren’t on the line up. How do you expect fans to buy passes to see them if they are unannounced? I don’t doubt they would have had a smaller headliner crowd, but to say only 5k people are gonna see Arcade Fire if they’re headlining is a joke. There’s no way bands like Depeche Mode are gonna play a tent announced when they play to tens of thousands of people at music festivals around the world.
What rock acts are doing more than 40k at a US festival? It's been awhile, especially if you exclude Sir Paul. Even some Tool/Depeche/Cure/NIN sets 5-10 years were a little light in the crowd pulls.
I don't agree with the "Coachella sells out with whatever" is a true statement. W2 attendance would be an obvious drop.
Taking it one step further, I think Trent Reznor will next play the polo fields in a Zimmer/Elfman type set with strings before NIN returns.
All the press about Coachella has been glowing about AF’s set. I’ve read more about their performance than the headliner for that day.
The SoCal butt rock market is strong as hell right now. Tool sold out all California arena shows. System of a Down played 2 sold out STADIUM shows in LA. You put those two on a line up in California and sales will be strong. There’s a market for everything.
Let’s play a game. I’m going to name 15 “legacy” rock bands and tag where I think they’d be placed on poster, which stage they’d fit, and what expected crowd size would be relative to stage. Would welcome others to do the same thing. This would be a nice sample of who we think could pull well in 2023.
RHCP - headliner - main stage close - large crowd
Foo Fighters - headliner/not close - medium crowd
Green Day - sub - main stage - small/medium crowd
Incubus - second/third line - sunset outdoor - medium crowd
SOAD - second line - outdoor night - large crowd
NIN - second line - Mojave night - large crowd
Limp Bizkit - second line - main day - medium crowd
Phoenix - second line - outdoor night - medium crowd
Metallica - headliner - main/close - medium crowd
Muse - second line - outdoor night - small/medium crowd
The cure - sub - outdoor night - small/medium crowd
Iron Maiden - second line - mojave night - large crowd
Depeche Mode - sub - outdoor night - small/medium crowd
LCD Soundsystem - second line - Mojave night - large crowd
How do you guys account for Weekend 2 passes being easily purchased during the on sale after line up release and deals to be had closer to the festival date these last few years even though Coachella has had some of the biggest pop stars in the world play?

why would GV care about the resale market dropping off if they sell all of their tickets

I don’t think GV cares since they sell all their passes. But that was a metric proposed for determining headliners. Doesn’t seem like there’s a ton of resale interest for Coachella since Beyoncé played.

well I don’t think anyone exists that has more draw than Beyonce so I don’t exactly get what you want them to do

He wants them to book Danny Wimmer bands, I thought that was obvious
I want them to book everything. Coachella clearly can have a shitty line up like this year and still cater to my tastes with the scheduling. But IDK why they gotta have pop headliners every year now. Switch it up. Do something interesting.

They tried for "legacy rock * rapper * R&B star" and all three cancelled on them (two rappers cancelled, actually) and the pop artists swooped in to save the day and bail them out.

Do the headliners even matter? I’m leaving for W2 tomorrow and besides the beginning of Harry, I don’t plan on seeing the headliners and my schedule is still incredibly great.
The headliners are for the normies and the press cycle. When you got acts like King Gizz, Hot Chip, Honey Dijon, etc during headliners who cares if they’re pop stars?
I mean, Depeche Mode or something would be cool but it’d also be depressing seeing them in a weak, dead crowd, which would be inevitable based on the age that goes to this fest.

Yeah this was why I had held onto going since 2020. That line up was well balanced IMO.
