Do the headliners even matter? I’m leaving for W2 tomorrow and besides the beginning of Harry, I don’t plan on seeing the headliners and my schedule is still incredibly great.
The headliners are for the normies and the press cycle. When you got acts like King Gizz, Hot Chip, Honey Dijon, etc during headliners who cares if they’re pop stars?
I mean, Depeche Mode or something would be cool but it’d also be depressing seeing them in a weak, dead crowd, which would be inevitable based on the age that goes to this fest.
The normies keep this festival alive. You think this festival can afford to overpay Aphex Twin without having tens of thousands excited for Gambino and Ariana?

Exactly my point, allow GV to go even more mainstream with their headliners to keep the festival a hot ticket with the mainstream. They'll always be the counter programming to those acts, which is still better than most other festivals.
Let’s play a game. I’m going to name 15 “legacy” rock bands and tag where I think they’d be placed on poster, which stage they’d fit, and what expected crowd size would be relative to stage. Would welcome others to do the same thing. This would be a nice sample of who we think could pull well in 2023.
RHCP - headliner - main stage close - large crowd
Foo Fighters - headliner/not close - medium crowd
Green Day - sub - main stage - small/medium crowd
Incubus - second/third line - sunset outdoor - medium crowd
SOAD - second line - outdoor night - large crowd
NIN - second line - Mojave night - large crowd
Limp Bizkit - second line - main day - medium crowd
Phoenix - second line - outdoor night - medium crowd
Metallica - headliner - main/close - medium crowd
Muse - second line - outdoor night - small/medium crowd
The cure - sub - outdoor night - small/medium crowd
Iron Maiden - second line - mojave night - large crowd
Depeche Mode - sub - outdoor night - small/medium crowd
LCD Soundsystem - second line - Mojave night - large crowd
The Killers - sub - main night - medium crowd
This post gave me a headache with how out of touch it is lol. Foo Fighters had an upcoming tour playing football stadiums. They would 100% close the night. NIN is at worst a sub. Green Day is likely a headliner. The Killers have headlined every fest they’ve played forever and would be a headliner at Coachella is booked. Muse had headliner fairly recently and would be no lower than a sub. Iron Maiden is headline or bust if they played.

There’s no way half of these legacy acts would even play if they weren’t headliners. SOAD, Muse, The Cure, NIN, Depeche Mode, Iron Maiden are all main stage headliners. Edit: And LCD too, unless it’s a surprise set.
LCD Soundsystem - A sub now, arguably probably was at a sub level when they headlined, they don't play huge venus - and this is one of my favorite bands of all time.
Phoenix - Second line but not even sure they are a sub now.
SOAD - Hardest to tell - they sell out huge venues in CA/NV/Arizona but seem reluctant to tour outside of that area in the US - perhaps because like No Doubt they get a huge boost in the CA/Southwest region but less appeal outside? I can *maybe* see them taking a sub set to drum up publicity or pulling a "Returning to the Desert". I wonder if a co-headline day of My Chemical Romance * System of a Down would fly? I actually think that would generate crazy excitement.
The rest are still headliners - but many would draw a paltry crowd. Iron Maiden, for example, probably *could* play Mojave at Coachella. So, less likely to see some of these bands get booked because of that.

If MCR was gonna play after the 2020 fiasco I have to think it would’ve been this year when they were scrambling for headliners. I don’t see it happening anymore.

it's an unpopular opinion but I still support Coachella moving to 6 headliners. think of it as Paul getting one spot and Paul's daughter getting the other spot. Outdoor is probably plenty big enough for most "Paul Headliners".
RATM | Taylor Swift
Bieber | Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Kendrick Lamar | The Cure
edited to make something for 2023 instead of using 2022 headliners

Literally no reason to play knowing they got headliner pay for not playing while selling out an entire arena tour. All the so called prestige press they would have gotten for playing they got when WWWY drove the internet mad. On top of that, there's probably some bad blood from being asked to sub especially now that they know their demand.

I think MCR knew their demand way before the fest booking mess. Why did they have 4 la dates placed on sale initially. And now its 5 with even a 6th if need be. Ny/nj has a lot too and theres lots of midwest cities they couldve done 2 nights. Next year I would expect a shed tour out of them though. Theyll headline Bamboozle and some other stuff. Hopefully they dont fuck it up with Paramore.
Can we argue that Emo Nite was the canary in the coal mine for them? I mean despite having booked some acts from the era before but nobody that was high line worthy, now they kinda gotta throw some of that in there.
SOAD aren’t playing anymore shows. Their LA shows in Feb. are rumored to be their last. Even if it were a possibility, doubt they’d get booked for Coachella. I was using them as example of rock bands that are wildly popular in this area.
yeah, I just through them in there so it wasn't all old bands, lol
but that's kind of the point I was trying to make, it gives them the chance to put someone that wouldn't otherwise be a headliner on the top line.
YYYs aren’t a sub at this point and I would need to even see an argument to make them 2nd line
Why are they a sub at Osheaga and Primavera. They were headlining Pitchfork in 2020. So there is still some places that put them high up in regards to their size and stature. You could place them at the end of the first line and then give them Mojave at night if you want to pack the tent out.

Serj doesnt want to tour anymore and now theyre gonna pop up for one offs randomly. Thats why they did butt rock fests cause it was an easy check with little effort over the course of a year and playing 6 shows in 8 months. Theyll play shows, its just timing and such. Best case scenario I think is if it was Rage with SOAD as a sub. You can still give SOAD. 80 mins cause Rage will barely do 90 anyway.

They're a sub at Osheaga. I think their general rarity would make them a #3 at Coachella. I could see an argument for sub but only if they release a new album with a single that hits the way Heads Will Roll did.
I think Daddy Yankee wouldve happened this year to kick off his retirement shows. As his final shows next year it night not line up with whAtever he wants to do. Gv had to wrangle em from LN for the Viva La date despite the 5 LA shows at the Forum in the summer.

Mitski and The Roots are headlining Pitchfork. Not exactly Coachella #3 shoe-ins

They printed a ton of masks to sell at Coachella in late 2019 / early 2020 to protect from the sand in the desert. When COVID hit in March 2020 they pivoted and just sold them as COVID masks before designed masks were en vogue and in the description they put something like "These masks were actually made pre-pandemic for a show that WILL NOT and WILL NOW NEVER happen..." or something like that.
I've given up hope on a "rock headliner" like Bruce or SOAD (or even RATM to an extent), but I'm just hoping they go back to booking a Steely Dan / Replacements / Sufjan type act mid-second line consistently, and not have "Coachella rock" be the 1975, Weezer, and Phoebe Bridgers.

Most likely any hope for Rock headliners get moved to Desert Trip which if I recall I read an article on Hits Daily Double earlier this year that it was coming back?

those aren't the rock headliners anyone is really talking about except maybe Paul who wouldn't be likely for a second Desert Trip.

Let's not group Phoebe with those other two, please.

I took it less as a comment on quality and more as a comment on the fact that she’s not really rock.

Yet they had The National, YYY's and RTJ ( who was 3rd at Coachella ) 2 years ago before covid.
Desert Trip 2 is still going to be similar to the first one so Bruce obviously and whatever else and hopefully Zep still. I dont think that should even be considered a rock fest as its a legacy fest moreso. GV already did The Big 4 fest, but with Danny Wimmer around theres like bo point in trying that again cause what are the rare gets?
