They might not be super recent, and a lot of that platinum stuff is foreign, but his singles have absolutely broken into mainstream radio play, and Odesza's haven't. He might not have had "big" hits in the sort of ubiquitous sense, but he's a successful crossover. Odesza is popular in a very passionate niche. A sizable niche, but still niche.
Flume is definitely bigger discography-wise than Odesza. But not nearly the live draw.
Looking at both tours they’re not far apart. Odessa has a higher resale in major cities but both are cheap in the other cities. And both have 2 Chicago dates but flume’s capacity is 5K and Odesza is 3K

Not to be a dick but this pretty much proves my point though.
Two total singles to ever even chart in the Billboard 100 in the US, only one of them a Top 40 hit, and that was at #20 in 2016.
That's *barely* scratching the surface of what constitutes an act with hits and I'm not gonna do the research here but I wouldn't be surprised if Lil Baby, Meg, Doja Cat, etc have well over 15-20 songs that have charted on the Billboard 100.
Meanwhile Tame Impala, a bonafide headliner, has never had one song hit the Billboard 100 and yet everybody on the field seemed to know the songs.
And once again I think ODESZA is boring as hell, I really don't want them to headline, I think they *should* be a #2 or a "SHM Returning to the Desert" thing, but I don't think you can write them out completely based on these tour dates and how they're selling.

And they added a third Flume show too at the same venue!

They can be a returning to the desert thing or a strong 2 but if they are a first choice headliner then prepare for a lot of tickets for sale especially after everyone who wanted to see them will be at the Banc

Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, Maren Morris, Cam, Sturgill Simpson, Gillian Welch, Orville Peck, Willie Nelson and Taylor Swift will not be headlining Coachella because they’re so disappointed at the moment and they can headline Stagecoach instead of Coachella.
I mean their 2018 crowd was pretty huge. By all accounts Flume's crowd was enormous this year and if you believe the scrubbed data posted on Reddit, he was the #1 act on Saturday in the app, and he doesn't have big mainstream hits either. The ODESZA/Flume/Porter/Rufus contingent is going to wayyyyyy outperform at Coachella despite having little mainstream recognition.
Biggest crowd ever is a huge stretch but I definitely think they would outdraw all three of 2019's headliners...none of them had a huge crowd, even Ari. And, hot take, I think there is a huge chance they'd outdraw both RATM and Frank.
At least from where I was in that crowd, majority of ODESZA's crowd was just waiting for Em. No one really seemed into it. And stayed for Em after they finished

This is also kind of just how Sunday coachella crowds are though. Where I was it started to empty out after Odesza ended and through the start of Em

Flume and Odesza are playing the same venue in my city it's ~7k capacity
Flume tix are still available, Odesza sold out 2 nights in an hour or so.
I believe the 'biggest crowd ever' was Kaskade, who has sold out stadiums and is also not a Coachella headliner.
The only other act in the history of the festival that headlined and is similar to Odesza is Calvin Harris, but they are only vaguely similar because Odesza has no hits and little crossover appeal.
Odesza is just Bassnectar for junior graphic designers. Odesza is for people who think Tycho is too edgy. To describe Odesza as 'watered down' is offensive to water.

11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol
I could see Calvin coming back as a sub with Funk Wav Bounces Vol.2 coming out soon.
If Calvin actually did a set that leaned into Funk Wav Bounces or Love Regenerator I'd be into it but he won't do that shit. But as a sub, sure, I guess, whatever. Seems clear to me he was a last minute replacement when MCR bailed, though.

I'm not so sure - not that it really matters. I think RTJ was the replacement. I think it morphed like this:
MCR headlines --> Calvin closes
Rage gets added, will MCR become a sub so it can go MCR --> RATM --> Calvin?
No. MCR doesn't want to do that.
Fine lets bump tour mate RTJ into that sub spot...easy grab, exact same schedule touring wise...RTJ was always the billing anomaly and that reeked of last minute add more than Calvin does. RTJ --> RATM --> Calvin.
2020 doesn't happen.
There were so many balls in the air that it is impossible to know what the original 2022 intentions were, but given that at some point SHM was confirmed to close main stage Friday, I wouldn't be surprised that at some point it was going to be RTJ --> RATM --> SHM on Friday - but then SHM became a headliner until they weren't again until they were again, and RATM is gone, and RTJ gets thrown to Sunday in a more appropriate billing slot. But it's pretty clear that for at least two years, even if only for a second, RATM was fine not closing out the festival and having a DJ behind them.
Who knows.
None of the above matters at all LOL. Just what I think the progression was.

I assume RTJ was always there given they were touring with Rage, and they never made any sense at their billing in 2022 much less 2020 much less as a sub. They got that billing because of Rage. But yeah, it really doesn't matter much.

Is this actually coming out? Funk Wav Bounce is a pop classic in my opinion. If he actually made a 2nd one as good as the first, I could see him as headliner caliber again. He headlined before the first Funk Wav came out right? I know he's headlining Life is Beautiful as the festival closer

I get that Odesza doesn’t make the most interesting music to most of inforoo, but at the very least they have shown the capability of putting on a high effort show with great production value.
I think Goldenvoice has a solid pool of no brainer headliners that they could snag before they’d consider someone like Odesza and they also only need 2 more if they think they have Frank locked in.
Odesza is looking like their hanging in that #2 or #3 range as none of their singles they’ve released for the upcoming album have popped off or anything either.
don’t think it was mentioned in here but in the LA Times’ interview with Paul Tollett they reiterated Frank Ocean is headlining again next year (they didn’t say anything about RATM though).

so happy to see that. presale will be a bitch though
Interesting quote from the L.A. Times article about The Weeknd demanding $8.5M:
"Tollett denies there was any payment conflict, or even a discussion about it. He says he eventually learned the rumor was started by the manager of a rival act who wanted the same slot and payday. (He won’t name the artist.) He took it as a personal vote of confidence when the Weeknd hit the stage on that first Sunday and told the crowd: “Coachella, you know how much I love you? I always got your back when you need me.”
It also sounds like The Weeknd reached out to GV as soon as Kanye dropped and offered to help out.
But re: RATM & Frank, I am guessing that they are committing to Frank for the rarity factor, and have lost interest in bending over backwards to make RATM work as they will have finished a big tour and played other fests. I don't think Travis is in the cards.

I bet the target is Frank + two new headliners.
If Rage was out then they wouldve announced so cal dates. They havent.
