Jack Harlow is getting huge but so were Future, Travis Scott, Tyler, Megan, and Lil Baby when they were booked as a #3 (yes Lil Baby is a #2 but it was supposed to be Harry, SHM, Lil Baby in terms of billing if SHM didn't want to be at the bottom of the poster). #3 seems to be the "big up and coming rapper" slot at Coachella these days. If feel like that's where he'd be.
By the time Future, Travis, and Tyler got booked at #3, they were all far beyond up and coming and had proven lasting power. But it def seems like Coachella wants it's rap headliners to be more than just super popular. All the ones they have chosen, up to this point, also had prestigious acclaim to their work. Jay, Kanye, Outkast, Kendrick, and Gambino get art acclaim. After Astroworld, Travis became known for having maybe the greatest modern live show. The only exception is maybe Drake in terms of not having "art acclaim" but Drake is unique in that he has Popstar popularity as a rapper.
Tyler definitely fits that bill now with the acclaim. But artists like Lil Baby, Carti, Harlow, etc. won't get that jump unless they take another step in their music or live show. Carti has the most live show potential, it reminds me of early Travis or Tyler but those two took their shows to a whole different level.
The only headliners I can think of that Coachella ever booked without substantial critical acclaim were Calvin Harris and Jack Johnson. And Harris at least had released Funk Wav Bounces vol 1.

You know what I mean - not "up and comer" as in brand new, but the generation below the current kingpins. New enough not to be considered "the king"...the "princes" if you want. When Future, Tyler, Travis, etc got those spots the "Big 3" were Drake, Cole, Kendrick. Now Travis and arguably Tyler are up there, with Lil Baby, Jack Harlow, etc as the new generation. Jack won't headline next year - maybe in three-ish years if he can continue the ascent, or maybe not at all if he stalls out like many others have.

Travis having the best live show is definitely debatable. Plenty of people love his show, but plenty also find it uninteresting.
Drake also has critical acclaim. Take Care and Nothing Was The Same we’re both well reviewed and appeared on best of the decade lists.

Don’t know where to ask this, but when do hotels usually become available for next year’s fest?
seems rancho mirage already had w1 and sold out. w2 avail at a rate of 580 a room. guess im not doing hotel again next year lmao. Managed to get lucky and book before they changed rates but now that Coachella is back to being a yearly thing it looks like theyre keeping that insane pricing.
Would greatly appreciate if someone would post deals for 2023 though. Ill keep an eye out

I don’t think Chris Stapleton was a 2016 Coachella headliner because he was so disappointed at the moment and I also don’t think he’ll be headlining Coachella again because he’s so difficult and he can play at Stagecoach instead of Coachella.
Fyi, i mean we dont have the 2023 thread year, but we might be screwed in finding another hilton garden inn deal. Looks like they had bookings open til 2024 already and next year seems gone. Unless theyre holding it for another 2 weeks like normal. :/
I did a quick search for both likely weekends on booking.com and the prices are absolutely gross. Like the cost of booking 4 nights is more than I'm paying for 13 nights of hotels in Spain for Primavera.

I’m probably out for next year after seeing that. Camping isnt worth it imo the air quality is ass out here. Even if Frank plays it makes it more likely that he’ll do other fests that year
I think next year is Taylor's year. I also think they will try to get a rock act. I am not hopeful that Frank Ocean will do it.
No, I don’t think that Taylor Swift will be headlining Coachella because she’s so disappointed at the moment and she’s country star. She can play at Stagecoach instead of Coachella.

Ya there was no way they were gonna make the same mistake twice. There should be a deal somewhere, there almost always is. It’s just too early.

Sorry you had some pretty shitty luck with the wind/weather for your first trip.

Yeah, something hopefully opens up. Holiday Inn bookings for any of their related properties isnt open yet for a couple weeks. Motel 6 was through the roof already.

why not hopeful for frank?
Why am I not hopeful for a headliner who is notorious for postponing, cancelling, or just not showing up to shows, who has already postponed his headlining set once, for a festival who just had bad press for a headliner dropping out last minute and who probably will want to avoid that situation happening again?

Rage would be the rock act considering they still havent announced any dates in so cal at all. [/quote]
See above - Rage's postponement was likely a medical issue that likely wouldn't be repeated again and I know GV would love to have Rage, but they've been trying to make these two headliners work for like three years and I wonder if they have another newer option if they just move on, accept it wasn't meant to be, and start fresh. Especially when RATM would have already toured extensively and played other fests by next year.
Lastly the comments re: hotel rates - Coachella has no control over this but I also think this is a huge contributing factor to decreased demand. Not everybody wants to camp, and hotel rates for not amazing hotels are through the roof, and AirBNB rates are as well and they have been cancelling on people left and right last minute to try to jack up their rates. The third party greed for lodging is getting out of control and I think a lot of people are having sticker shock. I also think GV needs to stop jacking up the ticket prices to absurd amounts but I am not totally sure if that is GV or AEG. When you account for increases for GA tickets and lodging, the average person is expected to easily spend $1000 more than they would have a few years ago.

I think Rage will be back again, there's just clearly a lot of mutual interest there, so until the tour dates suggest otherwise, I'd bank on 'em. Otherwise agreed with all of that.
I'd like to go back next year, but not with those lodging prices. I know it's totally out of GV control, but the hotels are price gouging at this point. I hope it backfires on them and they cant fill all those rooms.

The only things GV can do are A) reduce capacity so there’s less demand (and prices then hopefully drop) or B) lobby the local governments to open back up short term rentals. Neither is going to be a great fix, though.

I think a lot of hotels just haven't released many/any rooms yet and thus prices haven't normalized.
No way the Westin, Kimpton, Ritz, Hyatt, JW Marriott etc. are all sold out for next year.
