And Georgia Hubley. But this is why the list has become overwhelming. It is like saying "the top 10 men in music" and now good luck ahahah.
1: Justin Vernon 2: David Byrne 3: Kendrick Lamar 4: Paul McCartney 5: Thom Yorke 6: Brian Eno 7: Sufjan Stevens 8: Jonsi 9: David Bowie 10: Kanye West
It really depends on what "in music" means. If we're talking virtuoso musicians, I wonder if any singers would even make the list. I don't know. I don't want to even think about that other than saying Bill Bruford is automatically #1. I quoted you because fuck all that, I can't ever get enough Enocification. I don't care if it's early Roxy Music, Fripp & Eno, Eno solo (Here Come the Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy, etc.) Ambient era shit, soundscaping or elite production (Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, U2 Unforgettable Fire/Joshua Tree/All That You Can't Leave Behind, Head's Fear of Music, Remain in Light, More Songs About Food and Buildings) and all the extra synthesizer work he's done with others. Eno.

Which is why this/these lists are kind of.. weird aswell.
I think it’s to highlight that most “top artist” lists are not indicative of gender ratios of the human population. Men will always dominate those lists not due to talent but due to male privilege in gaining fan bases, record deals, longevity despite ageism, etc

It used to be a so-called man's world. It's not going to be that always. If you're old enough, think back 20-25 years ago. How many famous female chefs did anyone know? Women weren't represented in samples congruent with gender ratios in several high dollar professions or the arts (law, doctors, musicians, chefs, whatever). I think traditional roles/values and religious bigotry were culprits. Then women opened up a can whoop ass and are leading the way into the future. 25 years from now, there's probably going to be an army of well known top notch female musicians who would replace singers that most of us posted in this top 10.

Women have been making the best music for at least the last 10-12 years.

This hurt my soul to make, and if you asked me everyday for the rest of my life it would be shuffled. Special shout out to The Bangles and The Go Gos, my dad hated children's music so he gave my sister and I the Best of the Go Gos and the Best of the Bangles to us at a very young age as our Children's music.

My music tastes have the last 10 years have nearly completely shifted to women focused. It's not only fascinating, but really refreshing seeing the shift in demographics.

I probably won’t end up doing a list, but off the top of my head, I’d say my favorite women in music are Macy Gray and Brandi Carlile. I love everything they’ve ever done.
