I'm absolutely thrilled that the first song I ever heard performed live by King Gizzard was (and still is and always will be) The Dripping Tap. It was their festival set version at around 12-13 minutes, but it didn't seem at all like anything was cut out of it. I don't know if I would have had the energy to keep dancing for another six minutes, after a miserably hot afternoon (which had thankfully given way to a pleasantly cool evening.) That was followed by great versions of Ice V, Evil Death Roll, and Iron Lung, and then they put on their full metal jackets. The remaining 60% of their set was all metal, every last bit of it.
They debuted another track from the new album, besides Gila Monster. To me, except for the more old school Murder Of The Universe stuff, their metal songs all sound the same.
They were in the middle of performing Gaia -> Gila Monster, when the music stopped, the stage lights came up in plain illumination, and someone made an announcement that a 17 year old girl was missing. The mentioned her name, described her clothing, and then showed her photo on the screens. And that's when things got weird. There's a ferris wheel in the immediate area of that stage, and a girl on the ferris wheel began loudly crying and screaming. Not as in "Hey, that's me and I'm fine" or "I'm really getting sick on this ride, I want to get off of it right NOW." No, it was more of the tortured cry you'd hear from someone who just unexpectedly lost a loved one. I happened to be very close to the ferris wheel and heard it clearly. I have no idea whether it was related at all to the missing girl, who (according to a someone's tweet) was actually down in front near the stage during Paramore's set which was going on at the same time.
The music briefly resumed and they played Gaia again, and then it was over.
I understand that they're excited about the new album and in a metal mood, but if you've only got a 90 minute festival set, they could have followed the opening four songs with a few metal songs, and then played the Mind Fuzz suite and touched more bases.
Still, I'd rather have gotten The Dripping Tap (which was a sure thing in 2022, but isn't in 2023) and a whole big mess o' metal, than not gotten The Dripping Tap, so I really can't complain. Unfortunately, the die is already cast on their remaining North American tour dates for this year, so fingers crossed that they return to Boston in 2024 or 2025 to give us the proper multiple night treatment that every other big U.S. city seems to receive. For those anticipating the residencies, the question is whether one night gets a whole lot of metal (like we got tonight) or it's more spread out throughout the run.
For those who were were wondering about the synth comments and how that might impact the live show, that really didn't show up in any meaningful or noticeable way tonight.

I've never been to the Caverns and I only live an hour away.
I've never been to a King Gizz show even though I was at Shaky Knees last year and so were they (had a good reason for missing though).
Both of these "nevers" get wiped off the slate come Friday night. This catalog is so massive I just don't know how to prepare myself for what's about to hit me so instead of worrying about this I plan to just embrace whatever is thrown our way.

Hell yeah, I live 6 and a half hours away and never been to the caverns either. So super pumped, my first Gizz show I had never listened to them either, and I loved it

For those who've seen them at festivals, do the festival sets usually align with whatever they've just released or are about to release, or do they play a broad cross-section of their repertoire? Obviously, when they're doing 2-3 long shows in one city, that's enough time onstage to hit all-of-the-above, but I'm wondering if a festival set played within the next few weeks is more likely to be metal-heavy than they would have done, say, last year.
They'll usually do like 2 or 3 songs from the newest album, and tend to favor more recent stuff in general, but they'll hit at least a couple Rattlesnake-type older songs. They tend to have a metal section since Infest came out but not completely dominate the shows with metal. Would count on plenty of OG, Ice Death, KG/LW type stuff alongside metal.
