Today was amazing. Waiting for the shuttle after Bad Bunny was not lol.
Worth it though. Was fairly close for Bad Bunny & it was epic - the Grupo Frontera & Jose Feliciano guest spots blew my mind. tons of other incredible sets. Not gonna touch ranking things out, but special moments that stuck out were MUNA bringing out boygenius, DJ Pee Wee / .Paak in the Heineken house, Becky G Selena medley, & everything about the Burna & Gorillaz sets. Also Soul Glo was the perfect injection of energy to start the day. Excited to rest up & get back at it mañana.

Weird day on my end. Woke up to essentially find out a good friend was cheating on his fiance, with their wedding two weeks away. Asshole. And they’re staying in the house with us. So between that and the heat I found myself in a weird place for most of the afternoon. Even at Muna, which was great, I was just zoning out thinking about it all. (They’re breaking up and he’s been sent packing, while she’s gonna stay.)
But then Wet Leg did their scream, and from that point on it was an outstanding night and we were better able to just be present. Blondie was great. Gorillaz was outstanding. Chemical Brothers were Chemical Brothers, which is to say: outstanding.
I had one hell of a day. Started with a critical entrance snafu that meant having to walk for what seemed like hours in the heat.
Finally got into the venue in time to see just enough of lifelong dream Blondie before heading to Burna Boy who was so good. I’m a fan and it was so cool to hear those massive hits played on the main stage, he’s incredible.
Gorillaz was so fun especially all the rappers lead by Mos Def.
Seeing Damon going through banger after banger was awesome and brought me back to seeing Blur play the Black Cat in DC 25 years ago, but also Coachella 2010… my first one.
Chemical Brothers was impressive if overwhelming at times. But the highs were as high as it gets, ran into old friends in the fields from the rave days, another throwback and heavy nostalgia.
Saw some of Bad Bunny, checked into the DoLab for A-trak but bounced early to beat the rush and It was still madness getting out of there.

Day 1 ranking:
Chem Bros (wow!) Gorillaz (musically amazing, great guests) Despacio (difficult to leave this place) Lewis OfMan (amazing start of the weekend) Ashnikko (surprisingly entertaining) Blondie (if her voice was still strong, I'd rank her higher) Metro Boomin (last 2 songs) Comet is Coming (saw this from a distance) FKJ (saw only 1 song, good but little slow)

This place is on another level. I left LA at about 1:15 and it said I was a little over three hours away. Got it down to two hours and it stayed on two hours away for another two hours. Signage and directions in were vague but I talked to a cop who told me to make a u turn and got in to the campsite with no line. I'm camped in the back of 10A by the toll booths. If you look at the camping map I'm at the bottom left corner close to that restroom sign. Good thing is I'm a two minute walk to those very clean restrooms. I made it in and Tobe came on stage right as I got to the tent. He's the future and that's why all these guests are on em. His whole show is amazing and it was cool that I got my first surprise guest within 30 minutes of being in the venue. Wet leg were as good as I hoped they would be and they had a blast. Both of these bands could headline festivals with another big album or two. Got to see a song of The Garden and caught the tail end of Blondie. It looked like she had the crowd completely. Then the reason I'm here, Gorillaz into chemical brothers. The guests were unlike anything I've ever seen. Beck, thundercat, Bunny, moonchild sanelly, hypnotic brass ensemble, mos def, bootie brown, lil simz, de la and del. With Johnny Marr from the Smiths on guitar the whole time. I couldn't believe it and it's one of the best things I've ever seen. Made the trip from Knoxville worth it and quickly. Chemical brothers was insanity in all the right ways, too. Popped over to see a couple from Ashnikko then back to chems. Hit 10000 steps at like 1230. It took me forever to find a bar which was fine and once I found one we could just take drinks anywhere. Bunny's crowd was packed. Is that the normal headliner crowd size? My camping experience has been basically identical to Bonnaroo thus far in terms of comradery. My neighbors are awesome and that helps when you're solo. Ive already told some friends who I know would dig it that they're coming next time. I think the only thing I'd do differently is opt for the preferred camping if shuttles are bad. Maybe they'll figure it out today. Excellent first fay. So far so good. I love this place.
Didn’t matter that the crowd wasn’t into it at Gorillaz. It was still phenomenal
were they not into it in person? bc they looked way more into it on stream they did last weekend. would be interested to see how both weeks translated in person
They were into Bad Bunny coming out and Clint Eastwood. The people around us were asking me and my girlfriend who the guests were the entire time starting with Beck. Several people were saying Gorillaz suck when we were walking out of the crowd. It had to have been better than weekend one because Damon mentioned that, so I can’t imagine how dead weekend one was. All that aside, no one was rude while I danced my ass off in the middle of them. It was a great time.

Bunny’s crowd was weird - we went over from the Outdoor ten minutes after chemical brothers and the right side of the stage was shockingly empty, like half as full as Gorillaz at most. Then on our way out an hour later we went through the main stage beer garden on the left, and it was insanely crowded. All from people coming over from Sahara and not bothering to go around I guess?
We stopped at In N Out in Palm Desert on the way to the hotel last night and after we were done eating The Weeknd and entourage show up. Seemed like a nice guy, was taking pictures with people from inside his big SUV.
maybe just getting older and sentimental and shit but that sunset Kaytranada set with the sun kissing the palm trees and mountains with that music one was near perfection

Nah. That was aesthetic perfection. Could not have been better timed.

it was this, lots of people stopping and setting up sho on the polo field sign of things. was able to sit for 15 mins with pretty good views on the far right
¿Teo? was a fantastic start to the day. Sounded great, played all my favs and really helped establish the international vibe of this year’s lineup.
Burna Boy gave me one of those classic Coachella moments of walking past a stage and hearing music so good that it just pulls you in. Didn’t have any plans to see him but holy moly am I glad I did. (Yves Tumor did this for me too!)
Everyone here was crapping on Two Friends after the lineup drop but they really showed why they deserved a primetime Sahara slot. Their set had a whole storyline, strong visuals and that makeshift spaceship on hydraulics for their DJ booth was a nice touch. Even if you don’t like their brand of EDM cheese you can’t deny that their production was both well thought out and executed. Props to them.
Bad Bunny was just stellar. Of course the energy was high and the production was amazing but something that I haven’t heard people talk about is how good he sounds live. Even though he did a lot of “hey audience, sing it!!” moments, whenever he leapt back in to the vocals he sounded almost exactly like the studio recording. (Even all the way down to that last lingering note of “Si veo a tu mama”)
Y’all weren’t kidding: Flavors of Africa was SO GOOD. Great well-rounded meal and the jerk chicken wasn’t so spicy/heavy that it slowed me down. Def will be back.
Coachella’s commitment to truly being a global festival with artists from across the world is really paying off. I feel like barely half of the sets I saw were solely in English and the crowds I was in were totally into it. I think the fest really earns more international credibility with these moves and is pulling in people who never considered making the trek to the desert. I overheard/met many people who were saying it’s their first Coachella and I think this is a big reason why.
LESSONS
Despacio is best in the evening. During 2016 I stopped in twice, both early in the day, and just didn’t really “get it.” This year I went later when the lights were going and the bpm was a little higher and it was awesome. I think this really benefits from being in the back rather than the front like in ‘16 because checking it out as you’re walking in at the beginning of the day really isn’t the best time to see it in action and doesn’t give people a good reason to return.
I’ve always stayed in either Palm Springs or Palm Desert and just taken the shuttle closest to me. In the past I’ve experienced waits for those shuttles, plus it’s a long ride from those stops into the fest. I wanted to make sure I was in and ready for ¿Teo? at 2 so instead I did the park-and-ride at the Tennis Garden. The process was so smooth!! Parking was pretty easy and they had four shuttles lined up ready to go when I got out my car. So instead of hopping straight on, I stopped over at that satellite merch truck and picked up a t-shirt. After hearing about issues at other shuttle stops this was easily one of the biggest wins of the day as I was on the grounds by 1, didn’t have to brave a horrendous locker line cause I got there early AND didn’t have to bother with the merch store hellhole just to overpay for a t-shirt. Would highly recommend all-around. (Although they really need to do something about signage for two different shuttles at the end of the night: one was named “Indian Wells” and another named “Tennis Garden.” I almost got on the former when I realized I shoulda been taking the latter. This is just cruel when you’ve got people drunk and dazed after a full day in the heat who can barely think straight.)
Sonora’s newfound popularity gives me mixed feelings. I enjoy that those acts are getting seen rather than being forgotten like in past years. At the same time I miss being able to easily duck in for great music, AC and an indoor bar. Luckily I don’t have many must-sees in there this year cause those lines yesterday were just silly with the way they stretched across the grounds.
Can someone ask the old lady from Egypt what she thinks of Lana Del Rey headlining Coachella so we can know whether the festival has redeemed its reputation as a laughingstock worldwide
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol

Coachella doesn’t deserve Damon Albarn. Chemical Brothers literally broke me down emotionally and mentally; I will be logging out of this account forever, sorry for being an asshole - I do appreciate big time what everyone is doing here. Peace and love.

Solid first day! Top set for me was the Chems, but Gabriels were the other standout of the day.
I had a cool moment in DESPACIO around 7:00 yesterday when I spit from my group and was just vibing by myself. About 10 minutes in realized I’ve been dancing with Lucy Dacus and Julian Baker and some of the girls from MUNA for 15 minutes.
For anyone that has braved the merch line either weekend, do they have a Despacio shirt for sale? I saw someone wearing one at some point yesterday but it might have been old.

That’s great. But next time don’t spit on your group and maybe they won’t leave you behind.
Lewis OfMan > Domi and JD > Doechii > Despacio > Muna > first 1/2 SG Lewis > last 1/2 Wet Leg > Yves > Kaytra > Angele > Chem Bros > Brothers Malcovitch
What a great, yet exhausting day! Doechii is a superstar in the making! Muna was a big queer dance party. SG bringing out Tove Lo was a fun surprise. Angele was mesmerizing despite the shrooms putting me in a weird headspace for a minute. Chem Bros were worth the ticket price alone!
This body isn’t the same one I started going to Coachella with. I’m dead and gone today.

Lucy looked awkward but Julian and the MUNA girls were having a great time and vibing hard.

I’m pretty sure this was a custom shirt off the Despacio subreddit. I also bought one and am planning on wearing mine today.
