This is hard. I don't really like the Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins are terrible live, No Doubt really only had the one album in the '90s, and neither Bjork nor PJ Harvey is a band. What criteria shall I use this round?

Blood Sugar Sex Magik and One Hot Minute both came out in the 1990’s and are both quality albums. That’s Aeroplane, Power of Equality, Blood Sugar (baby), Breaking the Girl, If You Have to Ask, Sir Psycho Sexy, My Lovely Man, Pea, My Friends. Damn. I love those albums. I guess Californication came out late 90’s and is okay but not really for me

I think they are very talented musicians who make mostly bad songs.

Vote for Stone Temple Pilots then.
I think by the time I eliminate the aforementioned acts, it will probably be about time for me to vote for STP.

Fair criticism. I like those two albums and the OG 4 from the 1980’s which did have mostly good songs in my opinion. But after that I don’t like much.

The last song by them that I remember actively liking was Soul To Squeeze. I listened to BSSM a lot when it came out and ended up seeing them three times in support of that album. Their schtick is very old at this point but they were still tolerable at that point.
I mean as much as OG chili pepper fans like to sing BSSM's praises, their defining album of the 90s was Californication, even if it came at the end of the decade. One Hot Minute was not bad but they were spiraling into irrelevancy at that point, barely touring and both Keidis and Navarro so spun out they were barely functioning. Californication is what not only resuscitated their careers but catapulted them into the superstar rock star status they have today.
And if a fan leans more heavily towards the 80s - BSSM sound, Californication is kind of the album that punctuated the end of the Good Time Boys era.
And no matter what decade you examine RHCP under, Keidis is a sick joke of a lyricist and a child rapist.

Had no idea about Keidis. Man so many male rockstars are rapists & groomers.
Maybe I just caught them on a good night, but Smashing Pumpkins absolutely slayed at Sea.Hear.Now last year.
No one’s come for your pumpkins yet.
(The strategy is to have your favorite band not be mentioned for a while and then they sneak through - like Denver)
I’m definitely not Mr. Pumpkins Stan - just responding to the idea that they’re bad live. I’d heard that, too, and then they knocked my socks on my ass, is all.

Anyhoo.
They were horrible when I saw them in 1997. I saw them in 2019 and that was way better, but still not the best. It was ok. They played all the hits.

Alright, the bands that kinda suck are out, so now we move on to "bands that are fun to clown on and kinda suck but also kinda rule at times", which I consider to consist of RHCP, STP, AIC, and maybe Green Day. I think I'm gonna be the first AIC vote here. And No Doubt is better than half these bands!
Saw the Pumpkins in 91 (opened for RHCP with Pearl Jam) and it was mostly just feedback and Billy and D'arcy giving each other the finger and yelling at each other.
They were much better at Lolla in 94.
I'd catch them again but I wouldn't spend much money doing so.

Than Alice In Chains? Fuck no. They are on a 311 level. They don’t measure up musically to AiC.
