Honestly the coolest thing about the fest was Pharrell’s connection with the community of Hampton Roads. He gave back to the community and had a mission. I’m very surprised he moved it to DC; it basically takes away the entire passion. He 100% should have brought it to Norfolk so it didn’t impact the community he cares about, but just the leadership pockets who are toxic. That would have been a bigger jab if anything. You don’t run from the problem, you try to fix it. And if he was upset with VB leadership, then hit em’ were it hurts while still being able to create change.

I mean, the cops in VA Beach killed his cousin under sketchy circumstances and little was done to investigate or hold the officers accountable. I can absolutely understand why he didn't want to turn around and give a big economic win to the politicians who didn't lift a finger to right a perceived wrong and to revisit a place that's not a source of celebration for him right now. I have no doubt he tried to keep it there at one point, but just couldn't find a situation he was comfortable with.
They are chartering shuttles to and from VA beach to keep that community connecting, and the site references reduced cost tickets with no fees for in-person purchase in VA/DC (no details on that as far as I can tell). And none of this keeps him from being able to make direct investments back in the community, so I'll reserve judgment on that until we see the vendors and the causes associated with the festival.
Having in in DC is a good middle ground and will probably bring more press and political attention to what they're trying to do. I also think Juneteenth is a great weekend to host it. Selfishly as a longtime DC resident, I'm thrilled that we finally have a real festival in the city and back along the National Mall (not tucked in an RFK parking lot or posing as DC out in MD). No one has given it a proper go since Landmark, so I'll be interested to see how it plays out.
That said I am a bit concerned about the price point, especially towards the upper tiers (assuming we ever hit those). DC is really spoiled with high end entertainment options that often don't cost much if anything. Asking people to shell out $300+fees for a festival that is brand new to the area is going to be a tough sell (Landmark wound up having to give away a bunch of tickets even with peak Drake on the line-up and Freefest was, well, often free) -- and they are late to the starting block, meaning many people may already have commitments that weekend or tickets to another major fest like Roo.
Hoping they have realistic expectations for this and some good community tie-ins planned, but I'll definitely be there to support.
That said, this can't be great news for Broccoli City Festival ing forward

I should preface I’m from VB, so I am aware of Donovan Lynch’s murder and agree that he should not host the event in Virginia Beach due to the actions of the leadership and the police. It’s just hard not to take it personally through the eyes of the community. The mass majority that support his endeavors here also supported Justice for Donavan and condemned the action of the police and wanted punishment. IMO it just feels that hosting in the community he cares about and continuing his mission to grow and foster change in the 757 seems like a more personal step than DC. Norfolk or Chesapeake - somewhere at the doors of the toxic energy. Although I think bringing it to the front steps of the capital is definitely a more grand message forsure.
I wasn’t aware he is offering shuttles from the area, which is great. And I also got an email regarding a loyalty program, which is great he is bringing that back!
I look forward to seeing what good he brings the community up there, as he had done so much good here when given the opportunity! It’s hard to explain what Something In The Water was to a Virginia Beach native, but it was truly magical and offered so much promise, more so than any event in the past few decades. No Festival experience can compare to the life of his cousin now senselessly lost, so not hosting it here is honestly trivial, but it still stings to those that really felt change in the air and more so for those that are not privileged and saw Pharrell’s engagement as a beacon of hope. Then again the man owes this area and it’s people nothing and anyplace he decides to continue his mission will be a grand return. I hope the festival in DC is as amazing as it was in 2019! I went to Landmark Festival (someone scored tickets for $99) and the grounds by MLKs monument were absolutely beautiful. I think this will also be a great fit.
I don't know if we're allowed to code beg here -- but if anyone has a loyalty pre-sale code for this that you're not going to use, I would greatly appreciate if you sent it my way.
And thanks a lot for your perspective Swaimbb, I really do feel for you and the greater VA Beach community in terms of how this all played out.

think it says its in person only
I think the loyalty pre-sale is today until tomorrow based off folks who attended in 2019 (it may be in person, but I haven't seen that advised) -- the VA resident sale is on Friday, only at a location in VA Beach. They initially advised a DC resident sale too, but that got scrubbed from the site sometime yesterday.

I know since it’s in a new location this may be hard to judge but what’s the vibe like at this fest? General sorta city fest with a bunch of drunk HS/undergrads or more arty like a III Points?
Updated line-up with some big adds (and the promise of more surprises to come).
Full sets
21 Savage Anderson Paak and the Free Nationals Bad Brains (A tribute by Black Dots) Black Party J Balvin TOB YUNGMANNY ??? (between Paris TX and Pusha T, but not sure we should read much into that? If so, Post Malone or Pearl Jam would be big names that fit... probably someone more on the Polo G level though)
Pharrell and "Phriends" guests Clipse Justin Timberlake NORE Q Tip SZA
It would be very random, but the ??? could also be Phoebe Bridgers. She's got 2 shows in DC this weekend, which would be a reason not to advertise her yet, and she'll be up in NY finishing up her US tour after.
Not sure if she would want to tack on another show and not just hang out in NY before her EU tour kicks off a few days later, but staying on the east coast makes more sense than flying all the way back to LA.
also looking at the venue map this thing is either really really undersold or going to be really packed to move around. whole festival is taking place essentially in a total sum of two blocks
They gave free tickets to every graduating high school senior in DC. It’s gonna be chaos.
ya I saw that, I think it will have less of an effect than people think. Ballou and Anacostia combined had 170 kids graduate last year for example. the wilson kids prolly already had tickets if they wanted to go.

Ya but they’re still not giving away that many tickets if this thing is selling well. The whole thing has been pretty last minute and under the radar

agreed. I picked up a pass for cheap so im gonna go but I dont really have insane expectations for it except that it will be cool to be able to take the metro and get home from the fest within 20 mins

I dunno, schedule makes it much more tempting. Can just pop down for headliners Friday and Saturday, then stay all day Sunday, holiday Monday. Small set up you can bounce between stages easy (theoretically). No lines for beer since everyone will be 16z. Not gonna do it but still
