no candy, celebrates the genocide of native Americans, all the family drama of Christmas without gifts, love my mom more than thanksgiving, not even in the same sport
Damn I usually really like the week of Thanksgiving. High stakes football, both pro and college, Black Friday is cool if you wait till like 4 pm, work isn't real for any industry but retail, Friendsgiving has become very popular the last few years and rules
Thanksgiving week features NFL football on four days and two USA world cup matches. Next year it's expected to add a fifth day of NFL football.
As far as food goes, it is what you make of it.
Nobody - well, virtually nobody - is celebrating the genocide of Native Americans. It's an opportunity for schools to discuss it, though, which is good. As someone whose children attend a school district includes the Tonawanda nation and has a required native studies curriculum, I think that's an important opportunity for classrooms around the country.
Now the holiday is about spending time with family in whatever way you find it and maybe being a little thankful for some aspects of your life.
Its not superficial bullshit like Easter and Thanksgiving. It's simple, nonoffensive, gives everyone a three day weekend, and something everyone, kids and adults alike, can get excited for in a reasonable way. Free to celebrate anyway you like. I see it as an absolute win.

It functions as a day off work. I have to squint to see a major difference between it and Presidents Day or MLK Day. Again, if a "holy shit human trafficking is terrible and everyone should have free healthcare and lets forgive all student loans.... Day" cropped up and we got a day off work for it, it doesn't mean its a better holiday than Christmas. The meaning of a Holiday is such an unimportant variable compared to the ways in which the Holiday's traditions can serve up a unique and joyful experience each year, in my opinion.
I don't understand how its not the clear next to go. Its memorial day but slightly less known for cooking out by the pool.
I’ve cooked out more on Labor Day than Memorial Day. Think it just depends how you celebrate
We are talking about my clear bottom 2 here after Mothers Day, so I don't really care. I think my experience in Jax could make it different since everyone around me got super pumped about camping out at the various Springs for Memorial Day weekend. Turned into one of the biggest ragers of the year.
But I do think in general that "grill out with friends" holidays lack identity unless that is combined with a lot of other shit like the 4th is.

Hard disagree there but that's fine. I think they are about as equally important, at least if you're making an argument for why one holiday is better than the other. Columbus Day changing to Indigenous Peoples Day being an example of why meaning is important.
I think if you're talking purely festive spirit then it's Halloween or Christmas hands down. But I think also that there are plenty of people who have at least one good reason to not like either.
Labor Day celebrates the worker, which is mostly all of us. There's no costumes or silly secular or religious traditions, but it's a day almost everyone enjoys and can get behind it.

As a bartender and in healthcare - I never gave any shit about Labor day until I started getting paid holidays which only happened this last Labor Day. It really only "celebrates" certain workers or rather only "certain" workers get to celebrate it.

Right. I figured as much, but in the service industry and healthcare how many holidays are you guaranteed off? I worked in service in teens and 20s and remember only for sure having Christmas off.

Zero holidays and zero holiday pay (in my experience till now) Poop on Labor Day!
