Maybe some of it. But disco sucked, and I can't think of a worse music scene I was ever exposed to. That didn't have anything to do with race or orientation.
Disco didn't suck. The watered-down, made-safe-for-straight-white-people version of disco that was created by major labels looking to capitalize on an underground trend often sucked (although I'm not going to lie and say I don't have a soft spot for some of it). But the disco born in the (mostly gay, mostly Black) NYC club scene was very often total fire, and I will die on this hill.
Is hair metal buttrock or metal? I mean, it's in the name, but it's probably closer to buttrock?
I always assumed buttrock referred more to a time period - late '90s to early '00s. Think Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Linkin Park... I may be entirely wrong, but that's what I've always called buttrock - the music I didn't like in my 20s.
Full disclosure: My first batch of votes will be for a genre I refer to as "stuff they play on the Other stage". The multiple genres are indistinguishable to me, so I don't really care what order they go in. Going dubstep here because it appears to be the obvious choice. For me, it could just as easily be house or techno or beepity-beepity-boop.
I unfortunately completely agree. It all makes my brain hurt.

People tend to define buttrock as alternative rock that they don't like.

I mostly agree with this. It wasn't a genre that anyone embraced or sought to be a part of because it was more of an after-the-fact meme that was and continues to be applied retroactively. To me, it's more styled in post-grunge and post-alternative rock.

arguing the definition of buttrock is an inforoo pasttime, but this is the first thing that comes to mind when i think of buttrock. formed in the late 90s but perfected in the 00s, buttrock is a mixture of the fuck-everyone-that-isn't-me attitude of Pantera, grungey Vedder-esque vocals, and the tension and release "drops" of nu-metal. throw those elements together and then over-produce it to hell and back.
there is good buttrock and bad buttrock. hair metal IMO isn't buttrock, as meatball said hair metal is pop music.
If you split country into mainstream “Nashville” country and Americana, Country would be the worst genre by far
i'm with you regarding maybe 90s nashville country and later, but there are plenty of 70s/80s country singles i enjoy. pretty much any time i hear Conway Twitty i'm like "this is awesome". i'd have a hard time voting off "Hello Darlin".

I have a real hard time with "pop" as a genre when that means putting Whitesnake in with Madonna (to try and put two contemporaneous acts together). It's really just "what's on the radio" as a genre.
I would have defined Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and Korn as "nu metal" myself. This is certainly not my expertise though.

i've posted and heaped praise on to this song before. it's technically hardcore/metalcore but without a doubt is also buttrock, and it's a fucking awesome song.
that fucking riff is so fucking great. video is also rad, if the images in this video were somehow a religion i would attend weekly services and tithe.

Blues is awesome. Knock back a few brews, listen to the same 3 chords for 8 minutes, hear some guy sing his heart out about how his woman left him for the 10th time, and then go into a solo that makes you go “wooooh buddy”.
haha. Blues was listed in "bad genres." I don't see it. We aren't anywhere near where we are today in music without it.
I don’t think we should look through the lens of influence tbh. It would just be impossible. Blues is good enough to stand on its own. It shouldn’t be top 5 but should make it a few rounds.
