Welcome to the Newport Folk 2023 Thread! Let's hop right back in, no need to let the dust settle
I usually like to start off with a couple of my hopes/predictions for the lineup, but I've been especially bored at work this week and with Newport on the brain and I ended up making two full mocks
Friday: Fort: Danielle Ponder > Hiss Golden Messenger > Wynonna > Lucinda Williams > Brittany Howard > Chris Stapleton Quad: Sarah Shook & The Disarmers > The Suffers > Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway > Weyes Blood > Alvvays > King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Harbor: Leah Senior > Medicine Singers > Ezra Furman > Claud > Maya Hawke > Amanda Shires
Saturday: Fort: S.G. Goodman > Strand of Oaks > Bartees Strange > Remi Wolf > Big Thief > Phoebe Bridgers & Friends Quad: Leyla McCalla > Sloppy Jane > Rubblebucket > Indigo de Souza > The Lone Bellow > Trampled By Turtles Harbor: Lowland Hum > Brittney Spencer > Christone “Kingfish” Ingram > William Tyler > Working Man’s Dead cover set > Son Volt
Sunday: Fort: Celisse > Nikki Lane > Orville Peck > Maggie Rogers > The War On Drugs > Stevie Nicks Quad: Samantha Crain > Madison McFerrin > White Denim > Delta Spirit > Durand Jones & The Indications > Khruangbin & Vieux Farka Touré Harbor: Uwade > Jake Xerxes Fussell > Tomberlin > Adrianne Lenker > Mandy Moore > Josh Ritter (solo)
Mock 2: Headliners: Bruce Springsteen | Florence + The Machine | Leon Bridges
Friday: Fort: Lady Wray > Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors > Julia Jacklin > Bettye LaVette > The Shins > Leon Bridges Quad: Flock of Dimes > Mdou Moctar > Courtney Marie Andrews > Drive-By Truckers > Marcus Mumford > Fiona Apple Harbor: Shannon Lay > Rising Appalachia > Black Country New Road > Madison Cunningham > MC Taylor & Friends perform Magnolia Electric Co. > Richard Thompson
Saturday: Fort: Plains (Katie Crutchfield & Jess Williamson) > The Weather Station > Megafaun > Yola > Father John Misty > Florence + The Machine Quad: Samantha Fish > Lido Pimienta > Sampa the Great > Amyl & The Sniffers > Angel Olsen > Eddie Vedder Harbor: King Hannah > Miko Marks > Kelsey Waldon > Kathleen Edwards > Watkins Family Hour > Sam Bush Band
Sunday: Fort: Danielle Ponder > The War and Treaty > Arlo Parks > Big Thief > Caamp > Bruce Springsteen Quad: Amy Helm > Liz Cooper > Lady Lamb > Shovels & Rope > Tash Sultana > She & Him & Friends perform the music of Brian Wilson Harbor: Tim Bernardes > Twain > The Ghost of Paul Revere > Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway > Andy Shauf > Ondara
Let me know what y'all think/which one you'd prefer! I tried to keep them both fairly realistic (other than Bruce) but definitely geared them towards my taste.

Mock 2 would pretty much be a dream for me! Florence & The Machine is my #1 wish.
Also would hope for some combo of: Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Laura Marling, Big Thief, Margaret Glaspy, Julia Jacklin, Rayland Baxter, and Angie McMahon; and would like to see The Backseat Lovers back (and Madi Diaz since I didn't get to see her due to conflict with TBL; heard she was great though). Phoebe would be awesome to have as well.
Would love: - Orville Peck and Trixie Mattel: Would be great for both to have their own sets and then host an after party while they’re at it. - More bluegrass/country sets. Would love to see Tyler Childers again. Wonder what Sturgill Simpson is up to too. - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - The return of Big Thief - Keith Richards - always - Amigo the Devil

Yes to all of this. I'd also love (but not sure what he's up to lately ..it's been a while since I looked him up) a Keller Williams bluegrass grateful dead set would be super fun

Cool mocks but Fiona Apple would headline. It would be her first show in like a decade, would be an absolutely massive deal if she played

Mock 2 would be incredible but I think there's too many headliner level artists there. Leon, Fiona, Florence, Vedder, Springsteen seems like too much.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

I love both of those mocks, a lot of stuff right up my alley.
A few other folks I'm hoping for: Bon Iver, Bonnie Raitt, HAIM, Joan Shelley, Laura Marling, Sharon Van Etten, Sturgill, the Killers, Vampire Weekend
The War On Drugs is pretty high up on my wishlist for next year, and damnnn a run like "Orville Peck > Maggie Rogers > The War On Drugs" would be incredible

It might be years before sturgill performs again. He has used his recovery time to pursue other interests like acting. (I think he is in Scorsese’s upcoming film.)

I think he had even said that he’d be taking a break from music after The Ballad of Dood and Juanita was completed but I’m not confident in where I got that from.

Can someone give me a few sentence rundown on ticketing for this? When do they go on sale, how hard are they to get, what's the cost usually like, etc? Kinda want to make this happen next year

Follow Newport Folk Festival on all socials or at the very least check this board pretty much daily. Things change every year. I've been going since 2013 and tickets have gone on sale as early as November and I think as late as January or February. Newport will only give about one week heads up before the on sale date. When tickets go on sale there won't be any artists announced yet so you have to be committed. Tickets will likely sell out the day they go on sale... usually within minutes. Tickets will basically be about $100 per day. If you're travelling to go to the festival and need a place to stay, you should think about booking a hotel or airbnb now. I made an airbnb wishlist on Monday. Dates for 2023 were announced yesterday and by the time I got home 6 of the 20 or so places on my wish list were already booked. I got a nice place in Middletown (basically as close as you can get to the festival) with two other couples. The bulk of the cost of attending the festival is in accommodations - Our place is Thursday - Monday and we're paying about $500 per person which is way more than I've spent in the past.
If you are unable to get tickets the day they go on sale, sign up for the waitlist. If you sign up day of you should get tickets by July. A couple we brought this year for their first time were shutout when tickets went on sale - signed up for the waitlist that day - got Friday/Saturday tickets 1 week before the festival and got Sunday tickets on Saturday which they did not end up purchasing.
Once tickets go on sale, Newport will start announcing two to three artists per week which is like Christmas every day. It helps to be able to dedicate an entire day to an artist you may not have heard of and decide if you want to see them or not.

I really appreciate this, thanks!
Lodging is the big one, honestly. Newport proper has abolished short-term rentals for the most part, so it's a lot harder to find an Airbnb in Newport itself. Middletown and Jamestown are right next to Newport though, and you can find places there, but not only is that weekend popular because of NFF, it's just a very popular summer spot in general. Lots of rentals won't even let you book for less than a week, and many have moved to a "saturday to saturday" model. Something like that isn't a problem if you're planning on making a larger vacation out of it, but if you only want to go for the NFF weekend itself, it can be a challenge.
