There’s a lot of terrible Country, but there’s also plenty of artists we collectively like. Meanwhile we’re struggling to even define what Folk even is. Gotta go folk here

Most of the folk this board likes (Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, album Grateful Dead, CSNY) could just as easily be defined as classic rock or country. Meanwhile, when Bonnaroo booked critically acclaimed folk artist Tanya Tagaq it, uh, did not go over well
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Early (pre-electric) Dylan is folk. He was universally referred to as a folk singer. Same with Simon & Garfunkel - if anything else, they're considered folk rock. I won't argue the Dead or CSNY, but CSN definitely leaned more on the folk side. And I already listed out a shitload of great folk artists, like, two threads ago, so I won't do that here, but there's a lot of great folk out there. Also, folk has a long and awesome political tradition - Woody Guthrie was Antifa and anti-capitalist before it was cool.
Here is some great folk:
I'll stop, but I could keep going, because folk is awesome and there is a lot of it that is great.
I’m happy to vote for either, but it looks like techno has more momentum here.
once again i would like to take issue with the false advertisement of your username, as you try to push out the fun genres yet again
I happen to think guitars are more fun than computers. I don’t have to pay my bills on a guitar. Therefore, the music it produces is clearly more fun than the music produced by computers.

I mean that’s fine and all, all these songs are great. I still stand by my argument that most of this is just country or classic rock adjacent. But are we okay with narrowly defining folk music strictly as (white) contemporary folk and ignoring all the other folk music traditions most of us don’t listen to or even know much about?

I mean, Odetta's not white, but you do make a fair point - we should definitely include non-contemporary folk, which, honestly, only really increases the genre's quality and importance, for me. I didn't want to go into that in my post because, in what I'm sure is contrary to how it appears, I'm not trying to be all Mr. Music Scholar Man all the time. But there is a TON of great non-Western folk out there everybody should check out if you ever have the time and inclination.
EDITED TO ADD: Ultimately, I think all these genres are great. I know we have to pick one, so that's where the debate is, but it's hard for me not to get all knee-jerk "Look at all this awesome music" about any of them. Sorry if it's annoying.
