according to my last.fm the best indie artist is Genesis.
really it's Vampire Weekend but i haven't looked at my last.fm in ages and was surprised to find Genesis still hanging strong as my third most listened to artist of all time. I was completely obsessed with Genesis from 2007-2008. which is probably why i don't like indie music, because when everyone else was listening to to the hip indie music of the time I was listening to "Firth of Fifth" for the hundredth time.
Firth of Fifth rules. Tony Banks piano work throughout and Hackett’s late I’m the song guitar piece working with the volume knobs/pedals is iconic.
it really is incredible. the synth "drop" is probably the most stunning moment in progressive rock. and it's not just the synth, the bass line, the drums, whole segment is incredible.
EDIT: yeah and whatever the hell Hackett is doing on guitar, incredible.

anyway hip hop should win because its the only one left with any discernable sense of definition, as both "pop" and "indie" are meaningless catchall designations.

This isn't the what genre is more defined survivor
Hip Hop isn’t what I listen to the most but 91-99 hip hop is definitely one of my favorite things plus RTJ and Kendrick. I probably listen to things that are labeled indie the most but I’m not labeling it indie. I’d put pretty much all of it in rock or folk. I definitely listen to pop the least but I do like a good bit of it.
If we’re categorizing “indie” as anything that’s not so easily categorized by a traditional genre, then that should win. I just think that’s way too broad a term and groups together things that have no business being in the same category.

91-99 was absolutely the golden age of hip hop. And me being old isn't swaying my opinion at all.
Once hyper pop got voted out pop became the same level as classic rock to me

Probably just a function of my age but 2000s hip hop is really great. Wayne's peak, Jay's peak, Doom's peak, T.I., Jeezy, Eminem if you like that, maybe not his best but a lot of good Kanye albums and Kanye-produced stuff, Stankonia and TLB/Speakerboxxx, Clipse, Houston rap exploding, including Underground Kingz by UGK and The Fix by Scarface along with the big singles like Still Tippin that put C&S on the map, Ghostface's best albums, and so on.

"Saturday Nite" is everything great about Ghostface in just under two minutes.

I’d go with Wu-Tang, ATCQ, De La Soul, Outkast, Nas, Jay-Z, DMX, 2pac, Biggie,, Dre & Snoop, Big Pun, Mobb Deep, MOP, Gang Starr, Busta Rhymes, Hieroglyphics, The Roots, etc. etc. etc.

It partially is your age. My kids would mostly agree with you there. I like pretty much all of the rap periods going back to when I started listening to it in the mid-late 1980's (recognizing it goes back way before that).
My least favorite rap is mumble rap. I don't like most of the Soundcloud rappers though for every 20 or so idiots tattooing their face or utilizing other gimmickry to get noticed, we did get Denzel Curry.
Favorite genres of hiphop are probably underground, political and gangsta. But I really can't stand the posing phony mumblers talking like they are some OG ass motherfuckers when they already know they're as soft and full of shit as Vanilla Ice was.
edit - forgot to ask you if y'all was claiming the triangle now. haha

not quite 00s hip-hop, but if you are between 35 and 45 years old and had a friend named Bobby and everyone didn't start calling him Bobby Digital after RZA's 1998 solo debut album i'm not sure if you were hanging with the cool crowd.
