I'd argue Firth is the frontrunner...for now. Like man1cpixiedreamgirl says, the SAGs and others will give us a more concrete idea of the true frontrunners.
i know i'm a little obsessed with the discourse around awards shows, but i listened to the first half of The Big Picture pod and was happy to find Amanda and Sean pretty much agreed with my take that the ceremony was decent. i still need to watch eddie murphy's speech i heard that was hilarious.
shout out again to jarrod carmichael's opening monologue, it was a slightly uncomfortable slow burn but so worth it when at the end he was like "oh nah i took the job before i thought y'all fixed anything". fucking hilarious. also his bit about bartering tom cruise's golden globe statues for the safe return of shelly miscavaige was also hilarious.

Happy to see both Curtis and Hsu make their category. I get Curtis is the homage/legacy/over-due actor, but Hsu killed that movie. Also interesting to see Armas make it. Adam Sandler with the surprise appearance!

Curtis didn't get the nom because of legacy - she earned that! Have you SEEN the crazy shit she did?! The hot dog finger scenes alone!

She totally deserves it, but I was nervous Curtis would overshadow Hsu and indirectly prevent her from getting nominated. Every actor in that movie deserves their flowers!
I thought it most interesting they nominated Paul Dano for The Fabelmans but not Michelle Williams. The whole cast was stellar but I thought as a lead she was a standout.

She always is. I think they take her abilities for granted tbh

Damn, Cameron gets the shaft.
I mean, who from the list would you even remove ? Maybe Kosinski but it’s not like Cameron hasn’t had enough nominations before.

Angela Bassett should send whoever decided to campaign Williams lead a goddamn gift basket
Is Austin Butler ok? Why is he still talking like Elvis??
lol i don't know that was hilarious. also he talked to quentin tarintino and brad pitt like he had never met them when in fact he worked with them an Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

I want EEAAO to win everything, and I was psyched to see it do so well last night. I'm optimistic now we'll see a bunch of Oscar nominations for it...but I think Banshees is going to be really tough to beat at the Academy Awards. It just screams Oscar favorite to me.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 5/14 - Neil Young & Crazy Horse @ Forest Hills 6/8 and maybe 6/9 - Governors Ball 8/17 - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Forest Hills 9/4 - Pearl Jam @ MSG 9/7 - Pearl Jam @ Wells Fargo Center 9/11 - St. Vincent @ Brooklyn Paramount

I feel like if Three Billboards could lose to Shape of Water then Banshees could definitely lose to EEAAO. But I agree with Fozzie I think it's Spielberg's year.

With the globes over and all the major guilds having announced just want to say this is the best crop of best picture hopefuls in at least a decade. The Weinstein-era of awards driven films is over and post-pandemic it seems the industry is really going more for movie movies instead of oscar baity films. Kinda have to if they want to survive.

Been thinking the same. Way fewer examples of Oscar bait trash carried by one good performance. 2022 in general was an incredible year for movies too.

i got to see the black panther costumes at an exhibit in a museum here. the costume designer has done a lot of really important films, including coming to america (those costumes were there too and so beautiful in person). she was also the first black person to be nominated for an oscar in costume design back in the 90's.
