I'm glad everyone had fun in Chicago. Next time I highly recommend trying some tavern style za. It's cut into little squares, so you get to eat more pieces, which kind of feels like you're eating more pizza!
This year was amazing, basically every set was great. The crowd around us for the cure was next level, dude next to us went down for a little bit and needed some water. Turned into a choreographed dance around him to divert people away from our area.
Sound was the best I've heard as well....but ems situation continues to be an embarrassment...being able to respond in a timely manner to medical incidents should be the number one priority of any fest.. not whatever the too cool for school riot fest people think it is.

First Riot Fest was a big success. Every band we saw was good. All the people we hung out with were awesome. We tried all of the Chicago things, deep dish from Pequod’s, Kuma’s, Chicago style hotdog, Harold’s chicken and we even tried Malort for some reason.
Recovering from my 2nd Riot fest. So many great sets and I agree the sound was uniformly excellent. Ate a curseburger from Billy Goat tavern every day Lol- not upset about that at all.
Top 10: 1. Cure - great setlist - have seen them many times and this one ranks up there - really liked the new stuff A LOT and the ‘rarities’ were great ‘Cold’ and ‘At Night’? Whoa. 2. DCFC - playing my favorite (I guess a lot of people’s favorite) Death Cab album - not ashamed to admit to tearing up more than once - but maybe 3-4 times was excessive 3. Dresden Dolls - never saw them back in the day - had kinda forgotten about them but loved the set and hope to see again soon 4. Postal Service 5. Jehnny Beth - powerful stage presence 6. Yard Act - love those guys 7. QOTSA - reliably great 8. Frank Turner - another I have never seen and I’m glad I got to do so 9. Ride - can watch that band over and over 10. Turnstile
HM: High Vis, Calva Louise, Mars Volta (watched 2nd half of set from Cure crowd but that ripped), Quasi
Ok let me talk about this fucking festival now that I’ve had a nice two days off to recover (haha just kidding I am not a quitter above all else and have been working my ass off!!!!)
Thursday night started off witch catching Janelle Monáe at the Aragon. I guess I haven’t attended a show there in about a year but apparently sometime in the past 11 months they added a fastpass-type entrance and made the other lines artificially slow to get in to try and inflate that. What results is a line that used to take 10 minutes to get in that now stretches through the alley on the side and goes all the way down past the tire place around the corner. It is bananas. As a result of Ticketmaster’s unfettered bullshit, I missed most of Flyanna Boss but what I saw cute and fun. (Sue me, I find the running towards the camera/“Christ I’m bout to sin again” TikTok gimmick annoying so it was really nice to discover they’re good performers on their own.) Janelle was great. The black-and-white aesthetic has largely been abandoned by now in favor of bright, supremely fun aesthetics: huge straw hats, flower covered outfits, the labia pants of course. The band really jammed out on the tracks from the new album, but the highlight was probably the resurrection of “Come Alive” as the encore closer, which is a jam and a half.
And then on Friday (night we went through to the Arches) we went to Riot Fest. This year I took the Reggies bus, which was great for getting in and kind of a pain for getting out unless you left early. However, it’s a nice little trick to have in your back pocket. Let’s run through the bands:
Fea - Nothing mindblowing but really enjoyable, straightforward punk in English/Spanish.
Calva Louise/Yard Act - Skipping ahead to both of them because I saw the ends of their sets. So I don’t really have much of an opinion on it either way lol.
Olivia Jean - Wasn’t my favorite type of music (she definitely sounds like someone The White Stripes would’ve played with back in the day) but still pretty decent, the bassist in the band was really good.
Quasi - So good as always. It’s always fun when Sam Coomes does the playing the keyboard with both hands and one foot, and Janet Weiss is always and forever my idol so it’s great to see her wail whenever you get the chance.
Parliament Funkadelic - I think I benefited from lowered expectations here because I had a lot more fun at this set than I did the last time I saw them lol. George Clinton is 82 now and he was responsible for Maggot Brain so he can sit down and cover Big Sean as much as he wants. That man has earned the right to do whatever the fuck he wants now. In some ways it’s a bit silly, but it’s not like George Clinton only developed a sense of humor now.
Kim Gordon: she’s doing basically the exact same set she’s been doing for a year now but at the festival she didn’t have the driving around NYC visuals so whatever. During this time the corn dog vendor tried scamming Allison and I (unintentionally? But also stupidly??) so unfortunately when I think of this set I will likely think of that. But also there was a cute baby in front of us in line so I will also think of that too.
Screaming Females: sadly I did not like this one as much as I thought I would. Not really sure why tbh.
Ani DiFranco: By the time this set had rolled around I had caught up with blurfan . I was mostly chilling in the back but this was a lot of fun. I had only realized this in the days leading up to the festival, but despite it being some acoustic ass music Ani DiFranco does, in fact, have the bangers. Who knew?
The Breeders: The first time I went to Pitchfork 10 years ago The Breeders did Last Splash and baby here we are again. It felt vital and fun the first time around but by this time a bit of the spark has gone out. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they’re doing these sets - Last Splash is a great album and it’s fun to hear album sets. But I think I’d rather just hear a straight Breeders set.
Tegan and Sara - I was jamming the fuck out, they second-best song on So Jealous “Speak Slow”, like the fifth-best song on The Con “The Con” and the best goofy ass EDM collaboration from when they were doing that for some reason, “Feel It In My Bones”. My only complaint would be no “Living Room” but that’s ok. This set was one of my two top highlights for the weekend.
Foo Fighters - I spent half of this set drunkenly wandering around trying to find my friends. No matter where we were, I was pretty far away so I didn’t really get a good look at them but they sounded pretty great honestly. This was probably the exact best state to be in to really enjoy a Foo Fighters set. They didn’t do “Rope” (which is *sighing heavily* probably my favorite song of theirs) but I did meet everybody in time to do an annoying ass “Best of You” singalong right at the end. Awesome!
Viagra Boys aftershow: I won tickets for this and thank god I did because…..well. I ran into @xfinitypass once I reunited with everyone at Foo Fighters and he accompanied me to the show. He also accompanied me for the best…the best…the best…of riding around Chicago transit at night. Uber prices were hellish leaving the venue (It was $77 and I was not fucking paying that), and no matter how far we walked northwest we weren’t getting any better. I didn’t think there’d be space on a bus coming soon but somehow we made it on to the Roosevelt bus only to find out that Brandon Johnson had closed most of the streets downtown for Mexican Independence Day so the Roosevelt Bus was not going to the Roosevelt Train. Awesome! We got off and walked waaaaaay too fucking far, but the red line wasn’t that bad which was crazy. However, I did pass out (much needed tbh) but we ended up at Metro…………..just in time to see the last 20 minutes of Viagra Boys. Great show! Am I personally glad I did not call an Uber? Yes. Do I feel personally bad about missing out on the show for me? No. Do I still have regrets about it on xfinitypass’s behalf? Oh yeah lol. Fortunately we ran into stinky who gave us a much relieving “You hate to see it” and then we walked across the street and ate hot dogs. I then complained about how much I hate how excessive Chicago hot dogs are.
Anyway now it’s fucking Saturday and we have to do this shit again.
Enola Gay: I made it out to the festival in time for them, who felt like a nu metal Model/Actriz or something and brought out Jehnny Beth, whose accent somehow got 300% more American as she talked after her song.
Warpaint: It’s been years since I’ve seen Warpaint and I was excited for this. The narcotic vibes were nice on the newer songs but holy shit it kind of drags for a faster (and on record way more produced) “New Song”. “Disco//very” always a fun closer though.
Bowling For Soup: I did see them do “1985”. Whatever.
Jehnny Beth: This was my top set for the weekend. I’ve always been a huge Savages fan but before the festival I was anticipating the worst because she was playing a bunch of new songs and I wasn’t sure how well it was going to go over considering how little fanfare the first solo album arrived with (listen back to it. It’s pretty good!). However, the new songs were great (a particular highlight was an almost bloghouse-y track she did in the middle?) and she did a rather unexpected cover of “Closer” which was a lot of fun. Unlike in Savages where the bands’ energy was more aggressive, this was lighter and a lot more fun. I like both equally but I loved this set.
White Reaper: They were pretty decent! A lot of their humor shone through more so in the stage banter but this was a good “relaxing in the back” type of deal.
Viagra Boys: Speaking of Viagra Boys. That saxophonist with his gay little shorts smoking his little cigarette all gay like? I love him.
Frank Turner: Frank Turner is always a lot of fun live. His music often feels a bit too much like a stomp clap hey version of The Gaslight Anthem or whatever but the bonus is that live it’s way closer to the Gaslight Anthem part.
Death Grips: They didn’t do “Hacker” 0/10. (Just kidding u know I was screaming “TAKYON”!!)
Death Cab For Cutie: I saw them do the first three songs. Pretty good!
100 gecs: I didn’t see them earlier on this tour so I assumed there would be more on the stage but nope it was just Laura, Dylan, and some microphones. And yet this was a party I have never seen LD get so lit at a set before. What a blast.
Queens of the Stone Age: this isn’t going to be a popular opinion nor is it one I’m evangelical about but I wasn’t a huge fan of this set. I liked them the last time I saw them 10 years ago and I thought surely this time it was because there was more of Villians (which I was ambivalent about at the time) the new album (which I don’t really like), but looking at the setlist now there were zero Villains songs and the In Times New Roman stuff was pretty limited. So, I don’t know. Jon Theodore is great.
The Postal Service: 10 years ago at Lollapalooza I saw The Postal Service do Give Up. I’m going to contradict myself with what I said about the Breeders because I think this show was better than the last one? I believe stlallison said later she felt Ben Gibbard had more sex appeal now and honestly I’m not sure it was that but there was something going on there. I was looking at my old videos from the original show a few days ago and maybe the lighting design was a bit prettier here? I’m grasping at straws here to justify a gut feeling but there you have it.
Sunday: I was violently hungover today (whoops!) and didn’t sleep in because I was meeting people earlier in the day so I barely got any sleep (double whoops!) and also by this point in the weekend I’d walked 20+ miles so I was crazy sore everywhere (triple whoops!) I physically recovered well enough but my mindspace wasn’t where it should’ve been today, which was a bummer and affected some of my judgment on the shows. But so it goes.
Cults: A personal failure of mine: I had a Tumblr account and I don’t remember all the words to “Go Outside”. They had a lot of cute logos on their video screens behind them, but also I guess Cults has made so much bank off of streaming hits now they got to use the video screens lol.
The Black Angels: They made great use of that 30 minutes they got!
Ride: It’s always such a pleasure to see this band; it’s nice to be outside and standing in place and just letting the “Vapour Trail” riff flat above you. Also “Leave Them All Behind” as the opener? Killer. (New song was also really good too.)
AFI: No.
Flogging Molly: stinky and I saw a tiny bit of this. It seemed fun.
Finch: Against my better judgment I go to one Warped Tour band each year and I really really liked this one. I had to sit down by this point but their frontman had an energy level I was not expecting. He at one point said the crowd had “interesting vibes” and I still don’t know what he meant by that so I’m guessing he saw me and assumed the worst.
The Dresden Dolls: On the car ride over to the festival on this day, I kept on making fun of The Dresden Dolls to sang_xcx ’s wife which I felt this 🤏bad about. I find the Dresden Dolls’ music very silly (as well as, if we’re being honest, Amanda Palmer’s whole shtick for the past decade) but…I am sad to report…this band might be good live. I like a good drummer. This band has a pretty great one. I can forgive him if he dressed like Robert Smith if Robert Smith was an 1800s circus strongman. What the fuck ever. I’m not happy about it either.
The Mars Volta: I stayed for the half the set, which I sort of regretted later but this was really good.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor: They played basically the same set I saw last year. Not bad at all as always but I wish I’d stayed for all of The Mars Volta instead.
The Cure: I’m glad Riot Fest booked them. I’m glad I got to see them this year. The Cure’s shows are never super-high energy singing and dancing extravaganzas or anything, but they’ll throw out curveballs (agree with all who said “Cold” was so good) and the ending run of songs is usually great. Not sure I have much more to say!
Anyway, just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in again. I can’t say “never” with this fest anymore. There was some ambient pushback during the weekend, as there has been, and as always I’m not clear what Riot Fest’s path to saying in Douglass Park is, if it even exists. As I’ve said before, the stadium in Bridgeview is great but it would be a disaster to have everyone drive to this festival. But even with the rain delay, everything ran pretty smoothly, I never ended up really having any meaningful downtime, the side attractions are always a delight (in particular, the Logan Arcade animatronic “Biscuits” Misfits cover band). I had a great time and regardless if I’m here or not, if the festival stays here or not, I hope I have a good time at this festival again. Especially with all of you - there was a definite sort of family reunion vibe this weekend and that was really nice. Good seeing all of you.[/i]

We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

So I just realized the corn dog vendor that tried to rip you off was right after you came up to us while we were waiting on our food when they tried to rip us off as well. I think that and the water situation were my only complaints from the entire festival. Another thing, I don’t remember the ride to the fest after the bar. I mean I remember being in the car and you were with us but I don’t remember anything else. I don’t remember going through the gates. I think we walked up and Black Angels were playing? How did you see Cults before that? Did I see Cults? I do remember all of Ride.

Some funny stuff happened in that car ride, but when we got there we got dropped off a little ways north of the festival entrance. We walked down there together but we got separated in security. I couldn't find you so I walked over to Cults. You went over to the merch area during Cults and then by chance I ran into you while you were walking over to The Black Angels. I walked next to you two to see how long it would be before you noticed I was there and the answer was "you didn't and I had to tell you". We then watched The Black Angels together yes.
