black midi was late Sonora last year and sold out at a 700 cap venue in my area in October but had to be moved to a 1200 cap venue a week or two before the show. Still felt surprisingly full despite the late move. I think Snail Mail fits comfortably in there still. They aren't on the ascent like girl in red or Holly Humberstone last year. Without a huge release people latch onto, I feel very confident Snail Mail is late Sonora or afternoon Gobi.
I like late afternoon Gobi for them, last tour they were opening for Turnstile in mid size venues
My question would be who gets moved to late Sonora in their place. My gut feeling would be Bakar. They have pretty good streaming numbers but were playing 700-1200 cap venues in California last year, so I think that would boil down to whether people think an act could play Sonora two consecutive visits.
If you did move Snail Mail to afternoon Gobi, I think swapping UMI and Ethel Cain makes a lot of sense. Ethel Cain > Snail Mail (or vice versa) seems like a mini version of the "Humberstone > Japanese Breakfast > girl in red" run that seemed to work well in Mojave last year when I stopped by a couple times.
I'm pretty happy with the change as it stands though, too.
Is there a reason Elyanna is in the Sonora? As a Sonora rat, that's one thing that really sticks out to me about Saturday. I feel like she's there because of Nathy Peluso last year, maybe, but I'd lean towards that being a one off thing than a new direction for Sonora.
Nicki Nicole, Tomasa del Real, Javiera Mena and Princess Nokia have also all played the Sonora so it's not really a one-off thing, if anything it's a trend. Elyanna would fall in line with them so I'd suggest putting her back in the Sonora and taking Snail Mail out again.
I was mostly just looking at late Sonora booking, but Princess Nokia is a good example back in 2018. My general takeaway from Sonora scheduling is they tend to lean towards higher energy stuff later in the night. Hundred Waters maybe being the one recent exception I can remember but it still felt pretty high energy off in my weird, Hundred Waters-loving world. Maybe I'm getting the wrong impression from Elyanna, but she seems more like an early afternoon kind of Sonora set if she was in there. Completely just going off energy though and not potential crowd, which I have little reference for.
Hundred Waters, Ela Minus, and Superorganism also have me very interested in Yaeji as a dark horse late Sonora but that would be more off the beaten path in the absence of more live hardware or instruments.
And absolutely regarding black midi ripping! I brought my friend in who barely ever leaves the Yuma and it ended up being one of his favorite sets of the weekend. The saxophonist didn't tour the US later in the fall so it was a pretty unique show too. Just wish I had known more Hellfire tracks at the time.

Didn’t Marc Ribellet play the Greek in Berkeley (8k cap) this past fall? He’s a weird one, seems to have a big live draw despite not a ton of Spotify listeners. Kind of Odesza-esque

I think he's in a sweet spot late at night in Gobi. He's much bigger on Youtube for his improvisational stuff versus his actual albums, which aren't really the appeal of Rebillet in my opinion. I got into him when I started looking into live beat making with recorded field samples - more for learning music production with simple hardware. Most of the people I know who are into him probably wouldn't know or care about his Spotify releases compared to his videos.
It's definitely a guilty pleasure but I am going to have a ton of fun at this set if it's scheduled out the way it is now. Gobi will be packed and moving.

He’s at the tail end of his 15 minutes for sure. Had to downsize his show in Phoenix in late November and the smaller venue still didn’t sell out. That said, I feel like Marc is actually a good act for the Sahara but maybe a little bit earlier in the day.

He's huge despite low Spotify listeners because people go to see him make up bullshit songs on the fly for an hour. Nobody cares about his recorded songs. He essentially does what I do to entertain my toddler 24/7 except he gets paid for it and looks way better in underwear.
He can totally do an Emo Nite/100 gecs slot and he'd at least fill up a third of the tent. In fact I think the "cringe or genius depending on who you are" weirdness of both of those acts is the best comp for him. He's essentially a cult personality.

My easily entertained toddler friends and I are going to have a great time I hope he's at night Gobi, but I could definitely see him taking an early Sahara slot and swapping something like EARTHGANG or a guest-heavy Kenny Beats set to late Gobi.

He is definitely a weird one. He plays decent sized venues forsure, but when I saw the last 20 minutes of his set after Gorillaz ended at Life is Beautiful, there was practically NOBODY in there. I walked right up to the first 3 rows of the stage no problem. Not to say that's going to be the exact same at Coachella, but I don't think his casual festival draw is really that big...and I think he would get washed out in the Sahara, stylistically as well.

On the other hand this past Bonnaroo he filled a tent and had a good many people outside of it too. He had the biggest tent crowd I saw all weekend.

LIB is a weird one too because you're on asphalt all day and there is the temptation of going back to the hot tub, gambling, or clubbing if you aren't super interested in the headliner or closing acts. I also know where I would be at Gorillaz vs. Rebillet and it wouldn't involve a robe.

Yeah he’s a big live draw, I have been thinking Sahara. He played late night at Bonnaroo and closed the EDM tent on Sunday night if Life is Beautiful this year.

Oh no, I'm with you on late Gobi in that specific slot. I think balancing him with a headliner with virtually zero crossover appeal, the end of Underworld, and an alternative dance party in Chromeo for people who think he's cringe-worthy sounds like a good spot. I really hope it ends up how you have it scheduled though, so I might be biased.
Edit: I just watched bits of his shows out of curiosity and he has almost no production besides the same looper/laptop/midi keyboard setup he uses on Youtube. Doesn't seem like the kind of act who wants or needs the Sahara screens. Gobi seems perfect.

I’m with the “no Sahara” crowd for Marc Rebillet. While the music he plays technically could work there, he also does a lot of crowd work at his shows. That just doesn’t translate well in the Sahara. I’d say he’s bound for the Mojave or Gobi.

With Princess Nokia as a data point, I like the AG Club idea better than trying to fit Bakar or Elyanna in Sonora. I was looking for more of an opinion on Snail Mail playing twice in Sonora vs. a late afternoon Gobi slot before doing that move. That’s my bad.
Also: I feel the same way about Hiatus. They are getting an unfortunate shafting with a bad Main slot. Would be awesome sunset in a tent:/

My suggestions for Operation: Fix Saturday
Snail Mail out of Sonora and into Mojave AG Club out of Mojave and into Sonora Donovans Yard out of Mojave into Sahara Earthgang out of Sahara and into Outdoor (I think Outdoor is too spaced out) Prydz out of Mojave and into Outdoor Charli out of Outdoor and into Mojave (maybe during Calvin to keep any concerns of overcrowding down) Also 070 and Yaeji are pretty big names for Gobi, so maybe swap one of them for Ethel Cain

Most of these seem right except the last one (I think yaeji at least is fine in gobi, I don’t know 070 enough to know) and I don’t think charli during Calvin makes sense. Charli is tough because the final three main stage acts are all pop and she is too; if she conflicts with any of them, I think it’d be Rosalia.

I actually think a Charli-Calvin conflict would work pretty easily. Charli is pop, but she's definitively not top 40, and Calvin's set is quintessential top 40.
also I think Yaeji could work in Gobi but would need counterprogramming, and 070 I agree should probably be swapped for Ethel Cain.

Chali’s not top 40 but I do think she wants to be, if that makes sense. And I’m probably over-reading into Portola but Yaeji didn’t have a huge crowd or anything there, I’m not sure she’d have too big of a crowd for Gobi.

yeah I hear this. I think Charli would be better off as the clear-cut pop option her time, but if she's gonna conflict with any of it, Calvin ain't a bad option. A could-conflict, not a should-conflict
and yeah I agree. just probably better off doing it at a time where she won't be the clear-cut choice for folks (5:00pm or later basically)
Lol what’s wrong with you guys? AC/DC was fun as hell, and even if you take yourself too seriously to enjoy that how could you skip Squarepusher?
ngl I had a blast at AC/DC
This was my first coachella and I camped at the main stage from Azealia Banks --> AC/DC which was .. an extremely odd choice but I was a teenager and wanted to be close for tame impala lmao. I still have the light up AC/DC horns in my closet somewhere.
I feel like this suggestion won't go over that well here, but Charli also feels over-billed to me. Looking at the venues she plays, she's not really a bigger draw than Carly Rae Jepsen, who was on the 4th line and played the Mojave during the day last year; I don't recall hearing horror stories about the line to get into her set in the Warehouse at Portola, though I could just have missed that. Is she really that much bigger then when she was near the end of the third line on the 2020 poster? Google trends suggests not. Spotify's not loading for me right now so I can't check that.
All of this to say: I think she can go a lot of places. 6pm on the main, Mojave, Outdoor. The bigger issue with her to me is that the main is super pop-heavy this evening, and avoiding overlap with all three of our top acts for her seems wise.
oh, friend, they literally stormed the warehouse for Charli it was a shit show.
Charli def won't fit in the Mojave But I don't think her crowd would be huge outside either, which is half of why I hope she is in the Sahara. Perfect size, perfect atmosphere for her imo
