also, for anyone worried the Tale of Us: Afterlife visuals are too big for Sahara, here it is at Brooklyn Mirage which is smaller screen mirrored after the new sahara setup
I know I’m way over thinking this, but anybody concerned that the amount of natural light and actual lighting around the Outdoor could potentially tarnish the ability to hide the layers of screens used to pull off HOLO. I was watching some videos online and was surprised by how much of the screen you could see when a hologram was being shown in some cases. I found it distracting and really took away from the overall visual presentation.
Almost all of those were around other ambient white light being in the background, and while obviously the natural light and lighting around the stage described wouldn’t be nearly as impactful as the aforementioned ambient stage lighting, I still have concerns that it could impact the quality of the visual if played on the outdoor stage. Somebody who has seen the show in person please tell me I’m stupid and need to find something better to do with my time.
Maybe they can vanta black the back of the stage heh

Yeah, this could absolutely go in the Sahara. Agreed with Travelfan that we should probably go ahead and swap em with Chromeo.
There is going to be such an abundance of eye candy this year.
Totally. This is why I am hoping some of these acts go in the Sahara, honestly.
I couldn't go last year because my wife was eight months pregnant but obviously I was glued to Couch-chella. The Sahara is just so underutilized - some of the rappers of course brought awesome physical props but the visuals were just OK across the board. Then Duke Dumont gets up there and his visuals look so good in the new Sahara. It made me realize how few acts since 2018 have really used the visual capacity the tent offers.
That Duke Dumont set was one of the top few moments of Couch-chella that made me decide I needed to return. Those visuals were outstanding, and so meticulously curated.
And I agree, they've been really wasting a lot of the visual capabilities of the Sahara for acts that simply don't benefit from them. The size and location of the stage is obviously the biggest factor for why they've begun expanding beyond electronic sets, but come on.

I wish Aphex was in there just cause of that It wouldve melted brains even more.

You 100% know the Sahara crowd would have left 5 minutes in if Aphex Twin was there. Less minds would have been melted. The late night Mojave and Gobi crowds are a little more patient for the payoff
I really wanted to see Duke Dumont last year. The 2 electronic artists I wanted to see (PDM and Duke) I wasn't able to catch =/
I’m now intrigued regarding what I missed. Didn’t realize the Duke show was so highly thought of. That said, the first hour of Fatboy Slim in the Yuma W2 was everything I could ask for so not too upset about missing Duke.

At least on the livestream it was just a pretty phenomenal visual show that perfectly complimented the music, and it seemed like for once they turned down the bright and oversaturated lights in the Sahara to produce a darker vibe with the lasers and stage visuals. Not too many great videos of it online but this one does the trick:

I feel like the Duke show was just kind of a perfect classic Sahara set in some ways - not in the sense that it was necessarily an incredible set but just a fun Sahara EDM light show in a way that's a bit more rare these days as rap has taken up more time there. Duke to me puts on a good show but not one I tend to go out of my way for. That said, his Yuma set in 2014 was extremely fun to me.
I more meant seeing real EDM visuals in the tent in darkness, not necessarily the music itself. It’s just wild that they built this enormous structure with tremendous capacity for visuals and only a handful of acts a year try to max it out.

Would love to see more EDM in there this year.
I think this will be the case. Most of the hiphop this year can fit in the Mojave or be worked outdoors for a few artists. I think there will only be a handful of them in the Sahara this year. Maybe that's why the line up is super edm heavy and light on hiphop this year to be honest. I'm for it, I don't mind Sahara hiphop but so far only a few artists really rocked the energy in there from who I saw. Seems like a lot of the artists were just "too big for Mojave but couldn't fit into the outside schedule" I hope to see more pop in there though
I didn’t watch a ton of Couchella last year but that Duke show was a highlight. The way it was filmed was perfect as they used a lot of long shots so you could see the entire tent. I was wondering if maybe it looked cooler on tv.
Moved a whole bunch of things around on Saturday (Prydz back to closing the Outdoor), and a couple of smaller Saturday changes. Curious what people think of them, mainly the Saturday ones.
I greatly appreciate all of your work here Mikey, but that Underworld vs Dinner Party potential conflict closing out Sat is the type of energy that should never be released in the multiverse.

On a personal level, I agree, that would be a brutal conflict...I just have no idea who is a better choice to close the Gobi instead.

I’ve struggled with who should close the Gobi on a mock I’ve made too. Right now I have Chromeo, but I hate that as well. I know we saw BADBADNOTGOOD close the stage in 2019 so some precedent for an artist like Dinner Party to occupy that spot, but will say BBNG was a repeat act which is why I gravitated to an artist like Chromeo.
I’ve also started playing with the idea of Calvin playing 3rd to last on the Main too with the Sahara just empty for like 45 minutes during his set. Doing this felt like it gave the day a lot more flexibility, but obviously no precedent that it would happen this way.

This isn’t really a prediction but I saw Tobe last night at the Hollywood palladium and while it fit on a small stage it would do way better on main and outdoor.
BUT his wife is pregnant visibly and should be a balloon by April so I would advise not putting them on in the burning sun (I know Cardi did it but still )
What if Calvin is an extended set that starts at sunset?
I think this would make the day so much better as a whole, but wouldn’t recommend we build set times around the thought without any hard confirmation on the subject.
In years past when a big EDM act was scheduled to close the stage it always came with a headliner who didn’t align closely with that genre of music. BLACKPINK has plenty of energy and fits that pop/dance music mold so not sure it makes as much sense to have Calvin close.
I think the better evidence for Calvin closing is that we got confirmation he was gonna do that last time he was on the poster as a sub, and that SHM were going to do that from the Returning to the Desert spot before Ye dropped. Those two data points together mean we should default there, IMO.
