The Dinner Party set time is a bit perplexing. It doesn't feel like they booked them to be cannon fodder, but it's really hard to put them at a time where they won't feel that way. The closest I can see in the current formation is a straight swap with Marc Rebillet.

Around sunset in the Gobi could also work atmosphere wise and ensuring less intense competition.

I absolutely agree, Dinner Party as tent fodder (especially as a tent closer) feels super wrong to me...I just haven't heard a good option of who should close instead. The idea to have Marc close was also I thought I had, but tbh, it feels weird to slot him against Calvin. I could be wrong of course, but I think if Rebillet gets put against Calvin, Marc is going to draw peanuts. Personally I still think Drama makes sense to have close a tent, but a lot of people seem to disagree.

I just don't think that actually results in less competition on this day; it's too stacked. As we have it now, that would be against boygenius (one of the few acts on this day with more overlap with their crowd than Underworld, where we have them now), Yaeji, 070 Shake, and Jan Blomqvist. I actually think they'd draw better as cannon fodder.

idk if Marc against Calvin is actually that weird. They are nominally both EDM, but the crowd overlap doesn't seem that high. Calvin is top 40/big room oriented, and Marc is funky meme loop sampling. I do think you're probably right that Marc won't draw super heavily in that spot, but I think he makes sense against everything else (and we are talking about the smallest tent at the festival against the last acts of the night -- whoever could feasibly go there isn't exactly going to draw a ton).
I think Drama could do it, but I understand why people think they don't fit. I do think Marc fits better there than Drama do.

I hear ya, and I could totally be wrong on this one...but I remember when opening for Rebillet at 1015 Folsom earlier last year, his crowd was very much in the age range, and type of crowd that most would almost certainly be at a Calvin Harris set at Coachella. I know I also made this point earlier, but when closing a tent vs Gorillaz at Life is Beautiful (walked over as Gorillaz ended and Marc still had about 20 mins left), he had a tiny crowd, which I think would be even smaller against someone like Calvin at the end of the night.
Out of curiosity, what about Drama makes you think they wouldn't fit in a tent? Their show at Life Is Beautiful last year screamed "late night tent at Coachella" to me.

yeah I think Marc is interesting, mostly because you can squint and imagine him anywhere depending on how much they want to feature him. I think his crowd would do better against Calvin than Gorillaz (a cleaner alt/pop split, whereas Gorillaz are fairly alt-coded even if they are super popular)
re: Drama, just the counterprogramming we have there right now. Less so crowd size.
re: Drama, they can totally play at night but why I personally feel they are a weird tent closer is that I don't sense they have that "must see" element that a lot of tent closers have to a small portion of festival goers. When I think of successful tent closers recently, I think of acts like BADBADNOTGOOD, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Carpenter Brut, etc - that are maybe not super accessible sound wise but will draw a devoted group of people regardless. Vs. Drama (who I love, by the way) who plenty of people would like, but I don't see them having that focused draw to withstand being against Calvin Harris. Especially because yes, they play two Gorgon City songs, but a lot of their songs they play live are more downtempo and I am not sure that video is an incredibly accurate overview of the "vibe" they will bring to Coachella.
I think Marc Rebillet, ironically, fits that closer vibe to a "tee".

Dinner Party...does the Kamasi Washington 2018 placement (outdoor 7pm) not more or less make sense? Put Boy Genius on the main and then have staggered, but mostly overlapping with Dinner Party. Get the feeling we wont see main/outdoor be that clean of a split

I thought about this but don’t think it’s a perfect comp. they’re billed way lower and way less known under the name. Kamasi was also only sort of successful at that time, when there was a lot less competition than there would be at a comparable time here.
Also, I was with you on the staggering of the Main/Outdoor, but I went to the scoreboard and they actually have staggered it a lot more in the past couple of festivals, particularly after dark. I think we might get more overlap than we currently have, but probably not a ton more.

Fair enough. We can put Marc in there if we think he's currently the best option...though what do people think about maybe putting 070 Shake as the Gobi closer? I figured she was too big for the Gobi, but if put at the end of the night against Calvin, and probably something in the Sahara + Mojave (and of course Yuma), I don't think it would be an issue.

Someone (not sure if they want me to say who, or more details on the subject) told me that
"(_____ artist) was supposed to be on the main before Frank but Franks team did not want (_____) before him on the main so PT offered them Outdoor Saturday 7:10-8 approx on the outdoor to a silent main with only a 5 min overlap with Rosalia."
Which I thought was super interesting for a number of reasons, but also tells us we will more than likely have a similarly staggered Main and Outdoor at night, especially with less acts this year on both Friday and Saturday.
This isn’t really a prediction but I saw Tobe last night at the Hollywood palladium and while it fit on a small stage it would do way better on main and outdoor.
BUT his wife is pregnant visibly and should be a balloon by April so I would advise not putting them on in the burning sun (I know Cardi did it but still )
Do you think a 5:40 start time outdoors would be too hot? Usually that's about golden hour, and when things tend to cool off a bit...but I also have no problem putting Tobe back in the Mojave where he have Pusha. People didn't think Pusha should be in that Outdoor slot though (even though personally I think it'd be fine), so not sure where we would move him if we did this.

this is tantalizing. If it’s not Rosalia I could see Labrinth? Unless it’s Jai Paul and this happened after the poster dropped
Also I’m more interested in going to see Eric Prydz than when the lineup dropped because you guys have hyped this up so much in spite of the fact that every YouTube video of it looks incredibly underwhelming given the premise. The live version of Pjanoo better fucking slap.

Oh do you mean who the (_____) artist is? It's somebody who is not on the lineup, weirdly enough. I redacted the name because I didn't know if the person who told me wanted that part of it public.

ohhhh interesting. yeah I'm with you in that interpretation then (now I'm just going to keep thinking about who it could've been lol)

Would be interesting to know if this was before or after Rihanna wasn’t able to be pushed over the finish line.

Drama has been a favorite of mine for years but it wasn't until last summer that I finally managed to catch them live. And I was surprised (in a good way) because in my head I had always felt like much of their music was sorta chill and downtempo, but their set was high energy disco-ish house-ish songs the whole way through. Like, I'm pretty sure it was 4-on-the-floor 120BPM the entire time. If you'd have asked me a year ago, I'd have assumed they'd be too low energy to be a good tent closer, but now I think they are pretty close to a classic late-night tent dance party.
I dunno about the relative programming and their draw and stuff, but the only reason a Gobi-closing set by them wouldn't be a near top-level priority for me is that I've just seen them recently and there's too much else going on at this fest that I want to see.
OK so yes I know the same story Mikey knows, it's legit, and I think he is redacting a lot of info to protect the "story teller" which I agree with. This sounds super cryptic but it's not that complicated other than saying that more info could make things pretty obvious.
For what it's worth one other thing that I do know, that I don't think is compromising anything, is that whatever happened was very last minute which means you are looking for an artist with that spot who was available enough to book out of the blue and not necessarily something that Paul T would have been prioritizing early on (ie - not a Jai Paul).
So I don't think its boygenius actually. My understanding was that the outdoor slot was offered on Sunday, but if it was SAturday, then honestly I think we have boygenius wrong - unless Paul T stumbled on them being available veryyyyyy close to the lineup drop. I am, sadly, thinking it is more likely to be Suicideboys or The Kid Laroi...something you could pick up with limited time but that you wouldn't have been chasing much earlier. I honestly thought A Boogie was the artist who ultimately got that slot because I thought this was about Sunday, but there also is the chance Paul T moved an already booked artist to the Saturday slot from another day/time.
And re: this being related to Rihanna, no, has nothing to do with her either way.

this would be interesting. I don't have a ton of industry connections and I don't mine them at all, but I do have a few and I know that the boygenius tour was lined up pretty far in advance for this year. Should we be thinking about boygenius on the Main? They'd be awesome in that pre-golden hour spot we currently have The Kid Laroi in. We'd have to rearrange, but some things would be easy (just move The Breeders to 7 instead of 6)
or, if it's about Sunday, it probably means we either have Jai Paul wrong or Jai Paul was flexible and moved around. neither seems super likely to me
If Mikey has the detail about Saturday, then I think it's a Saturday act. I know the same story and I thought it was Sunday but never was told it explicitly now that I'm thinking about it.
If boygenius tour was lined up in advance, then no way boygenius has that slot. This spot was open at, proverbially, the eleventh and a half hour.

it's possible that boygenius was approached late with the tour already routed, but those acts all have GV relationships individually and they had that traveling festival lined up well in advance too. I think we've got boygenius wrong then.

Boygenius doesn't have any shows until after Coachella ends though, could they not have been originally slotted for Sunday and then moved to Saturday? I'd think they would be pretty flexible which of the three days they play. (Hell, even the poster days aren't locked in stone, we see acts change days once the set times come out periodically).

Sure, somebody could have definitely been moved. In fact, I am pretty sure somebody *was* moved since I don't see Bjork being a super last minute booking and we think she's leading into Frank. (Then again, Dre/Snoop were conceptualized and booked within 48 hours of 2012's poster drop, so who knows). But at least two big names on the poster were nabbed pretty close to lineup drop, on a year where most of the names look like they were chased well in advance. Well, maybe three names if BLACKPINK was really a sub waiting in the wings for Rihanna decisions, but I think a lot of people think that third last minute name was Calvin. So, who knows.

120bpm is pretty slow. figured theyd be a slight bit snappier like gorgon
