I really wish they didn't put her up against Kingfish.
honestly, with how easy Kingfish is to see, i would say to go see Chappell, she is well on her way to playing much bigger venues with more expensive tix
The more I dive into the lineup on Spotify, the less interested I am in every day except Sunday. Every so often, I run across an artist who fits the general description of an artist I'd like, but their music leaves me cold. There's just no personal connection to it, no matter how well-crafted it is. I've discovered that I really don't like Tyler Childers all that much.
For me, Boston Calling is a ritual and picking up a three-day pass is an almost reflexive act for me. Factor in that very few shows happening in a given year have been announced by January -- and it always seems like I can count on at least a few acts I really want to see skipping Boston altogether in favor of Mansfield, Newport, or North Adams -- so Boston Calling ensures that I've got some live music to look forward to. But then, shows are announced and the calendar fills up, and you look at that week in June and one in August and another one in September as being so much more interesting than whatever Boston Calling is serving up.
Club Passim does a 4 day festival called Campfire on Memorial Day weekend (and, again, on Labor Day weekend) and I'd probably get more out of that than I would at two of the three days of Boston Calling, and 4-day tickets for that are only $25. Next year, I'm going to take a serious look at the lineup and if I'm not genuinely excited by at least two of the days, I'll get a one day pass to whichever day does pique my interest.

i mean when the lineup came out the only day that stuck out at all to me was Sunday lol. very excited for it though, have only gotten more excited since discovering Chappell and Alvvays replacing Lovejoy
I’m not one to jump to celebrities’ defenses here- and yes I’m a fan of the band very much- but literally A- you got the quote wrong and B- the line, which yes is the Donald trump tweet about Kanye, is used in a song directly about how awful trump is/was. Yes the dude is rough around the edges but I genuinely doubt he’s like the monster some people seem to make him out to be lol.
Edit- obvs he shouldn’t be doing the salute nor should he be kissing fans cuz that’s just strange. I just don’t think he is as awful and scumbag as most have been saying he is lol. Probably a bit of an egotistical person? Sure but a ‘scum of the earth’ typa person? Not *exactly* lol
Nah fuck that, Matt Healy is a gross pos. Only reason he isn't canceled is because he is a decent looking white dude and Taylor Swift is a hella good publicist team that is defending him
Bro is basically this generations Morrissey
Stumbled upon this thread, and 1 year later, so much for Taylor Swift’s publicity team defending him now. 😂
idk if its been discussed but the map is on the app. Looks like vip is a bit smaller at main stage which is nice, alsp platinum gets the very front area of the right side of the stage rather than VIP so im sure ppl who got vip wont be happy about that
too early to know for sure, but the weather is looking pretty good. a little chilly sunday, but as long as it stays dry then i cant complain
A couple of days later, and things are looking warmer, with highs in the upper 70's - mid 80's. That's a little too warm for my tastes (for May, anyway), especially now that we're not allowed to bring one sealed bottle of water in with us. I despise the Liquid Death arrangement, forcing us to either chug a huge can of water all at once, or carry around an open can. The sensible way to hydrate is to sip over time, but it's difficult to dance, jump around, whatever with an open beverage, and who the fuck wants to carry an open beverage into a porta-potty with them?
I was hoping that the weather would stay cooler to reduce the need for drinking a lot of water.

i mean... you can still bring an empty resealable bottle and just refill it at the water station as much as you want, for free

yeah but then he wouldnt be able to complain about it
On the Friday schedule I only really actively listen to Wolff Sisters, so i've been digging into some of these artists the last week or so to figure out who to go see and maybe the lineup isn't as bad as I thought...
Divine Sweater i've seen before and they're pretty good. Madi Diaz is maybe a little boring but solid, Wolff Sisters are great, and then Beach Weather seems really cool so i'll catch the second half of them after
i'm shocked at how much i kinda like the top 3 Luke Hemmings songs on Spotify (he's like a store brand Harry Styles..?)
Ric Wilson i saw open for Chromeo last year and is fun, then JVK seems like they'll have a lot of energy
David Kushner sounded like store brand Hozier - hard pass
Cannons are like a woman-fronted version of The Knocks, but Renee Rapp is surprisingly catchy and getting super famous... so this is actually kinda a conflict now
I'm pretty familiar with Leon Bridges and YTG, but going to pick Leon because i havent seen him before and have seen YTG a few times, including earlier this month at Shaky Knees
as much as i think ed sheeran will surprise people and put on a good show, i'm leaving early because a friend of mine is in a band playing at Sonia... and then i'll be at Frank Turner at big night live at like midnight

Actually, if I read the fine print correctly, you can now bring in only a hydration pack (one of those things with a hose that bike riders wear). I thought about getting one and refilling it with cans of Liquid Death, like I refilled my empty water bottle which I brought in sealed last year, but it seems even more cumbersome to carry around than a can. Personally, I'd never refill at their water stations. In previous years, I saw a *lot* of people touch the rim/mouthpiece of their container right up to the metal spigot. Even without a pandemic, that's extremely gross. One of my rules is to never have this sort of indirect mouth-to-mouth contact with someone I wouldn't kiss. I had so many colds back when I was in college, due to the communal bongs and joints. And that was when I had the vitality of youth, not an MBTA senior pass.
unsurprisingly looks like sunday is about to sell out with its 3 arena artists and Chappell Roan. Idk how they thought Ed Sheeran was big enough to sell 40k tix at 170 each. hopefully this pushes them back away from americana with how poorly the Childers day seems to be selling
I stand corrected, you can bring in a reusable water bottle, according to the email, not only a hydration pack. So, I can pour the Liquid Death into it. Let's see how quickly I can get Amazon to deliver one.
"💦 Stay Hydrated: Bring a reusable water bottle to refill at free hydration stations all weekend long."
holy shit i really wish that was not during the festival... saturday is the one day that i have like 8 friends going otherwise i'd definitely bail early. oh well.

SOOO if anyone has a pre-sale code from the Killers newsletter that they arent going to be using, please DM me! Trying everything in my powers to see this show at Paradise lol. The Killers send random codes to people they think are in the area of whatever show they announced, so idk why I havent gotten one lol.
Has anyone been at/near the grounds yet? I'm just really curious as to whether those easy-walkthrough AI-powered security scanners are back this year, despite the new ownership. I absolutely hate the TSA-style pat-downs and inspections we're subjected to at many venues. Both AEG and LiveNation should use those devices at all of their venues, since they're both highly effective and the least physically intrusive way of handling this.

Since you dont live in a major city thats been the norm over here in civilization for quite a while. Pat downs and searches happen if you set the scanners off. Its that simple.

Actually, when I got a TSA-style patdown at an AEG-owned club last fall, there were no scanners, whether walkthrough or wand. It was simply a patdown, and the security agent pressed the back of her gloved hand on the precise spot that most people would consider to be the last place they'd want to receive an unwelcomed touch.
*The AI-powered walkthrough scanners are back and getting in is as easy as ever.
*They've added an ADA platform for the Red Stage. Unfortunately, it's the one ADA stage w/o a dedicated porta-potty, but the view's not bad and the three songs of David Kushner's set I caught from there were certainly loud enough, so (fingers crossed) they've cranked up the volume on Red. (Interested to hear what anyone who caught a couple of Red sets thought about the sound quality today vs. the last couple of editions.)
*I got there before the music began and made a beeline for Blue. Caught all of Kieran Rhodes' set. Pleasant enough piano pop. Every generation gets the Gavin DeGraw it deserves.
*Went over to Orange and caught the first two songs of The Wolff Sisters. Nice stuff, but by that time I hadn't had anything to eat or drink other than water in six hours, so I headed over to the Dunkin activation for some iced coffee and donut holes. The line for the free snacks wasn't bad, but the separate line for airbrushed tattoos upstairs was twice as long. For that kind of wait, they better be doing a tableau of the Dunkin Super Bowl ad from this year.
*Last year, if you wanted to get to Blue from that back row of food vendors/Dunkin/Subaru area, you had to walk through the porta-potty area, which isn't exactly a great setting through which to carry an open plate of food. They have opened the gate in the corner so you can walk around the other side, past the main merch area and arena and over to Blue.
*Caught Maris' entire set. Very generic pop, not quite as rock leaning as many female pop artists are doing lately, but some of the songs had very nice hooks. Awkward moment when the pull-off sections of her wardrobe wouldn't pull off easily, and she stopped singing mid-song while trying to remove the sections from her legs.
*Justin Clancy was the surprise of the day. He's like a Boston version of Kid Rock, but much better than you'd imagine from that description. Some loud rock guitar, some rapping, some singing, a little pop balladry. The thing is that he's got a shit ton of charisma and absolutely owns the stage. It wouldn't surprise me if he got really big. He was backed by the Peabody High School choir, who performed with him and his band for the entire set.
*Didn't like Ric Wilson at all. Cut out after three songs.
*Between three songs on the Red ADA platform and another couple while checking out some food vendor menus and activations, I heard enough of David Kushner to know that it wasn't anything I needed to stick around to hear.
*Lot of free alcohol samples happening - Truly, Heineken, and some hard iced tea thing at Blue.
*Be sure to download the Jersey Mike's app if you want to get free sandwiches.
*Sadly Naco Taco isn't serving their amazing bowls this year. They're serving a taco salad, instead, and the only greens it contains are iceberg lettuce.
*New City Microcreamery is serving real ice cream (as opposed to FOMU's no moo), but only in one of the VIP or Platinum areas. Oh well, it's not like there aren't 4-5 places to get really good ice cream or shakes in Harvard Square.

A much more detailed rundown of Day 2 forthcoming, but I've got some very good news.
You know those three hanging PA stacks around a third of the way back from the stage, between the stage and the archway next to the entrance? They were always used to further amplify the Green Stage performers, but weren't used for the Red Stage, which never made much sense to me, since it's not like doing that would create any greater sound outside the grounds or at the Blue and Orange stages than is created by Green Stage amplification. It would simply be a case of handling the Red Stage audio the same way that the Green Stage has always been handled.
Well, I caught the first half or so of Trey A's set from the Red Stage ADA platform, and I was very happy to hear a much higher volume than when I was last catching Cheap Trick and The National on Red two years ago. Then I walked through the main part of the grounds to get to pick up something I had left in a locker, and I noticed that the sound remained loud as I walked away from the Red Stage and hung a right just past the Red Bull kiosk. Then I turned around and walked forwards toward the Green Stage and confirmed that the Red Stage audio was coming in loud and clear through the three hanging PA stacks!! AT LAST!!!!!
This is a very good thing to know before tomorrow, since Hozier is almost certainly responsible for Sunday GA selling out. Like Noah last year, Hozier is biggest draw (in Boston, at this particular time) in the Sunday lineup. If you can't get anywhere near the stage, getting close to any of the three hanging PA stacks ensures that you'll hear everything loud and clear.
