I think one interesting point that article makes is that it really feels like the undercard is super specific sub-genres - talk-punk, hardcore, dark shoegaze, punk, etc. Even the one emo-adjacent band is like a true twinkly guitar emo band (vs self) vs. like an Oso Oso that's more indie-emo
I think its more thank just coincidental and maybe an actual booking theory why most of the rock acts they book aren't typical indie like MJ Lenderman, Alwayys, etc. and instead are like Viagra Boys, Amyl & the Sniffers, etc.
They do a great job of booking unique bands, but let's not act like Djo, Sam Fender, Still Woozy, and even forum favs like Japanese Breakfast and Clairo wouldn't fall under the umbrella of "typical indie"

I've thought about this too much. Are those acts not interested in playing? Is Coachella more interested in taste-making rather than following trends in the indie realm? Do they think these left-field artists will put on more interesting live shows? Have I overused the word interest?

I think your wrong when you say coachella isn't chasing trends. Not sure how old you are but Coachella knocked it out of the park when it comes to booking popular gen z led subgenres that are super trendy right now
Interpol & The Walkmen 11.23 I Am Morbid/Suffocation 11.26 King Diamond 11.29 Sadistic Intent/Massacre 11.30 70K Tons Of Metal 2025 Hell's Heroes 2025 Sick New World 2025 Maryland Deathfest 2025

Not saying they aren't chasing trends. But they aren't interested in booking trendy stuff that I like. I guess its possible they don't think MJ Lenderman would have a pull at Coachella these days. Idk.
Bigger Yuma means weaker lineup to start I guess. So Quasar is getting all the good stuff and pray that Do Lab has cool stuff aside from the surprises.

This is true, but I think the gist of his point is that they book fewer, for lack of a better term, Pitchfork style indie bands than they did in 2017 as compared to more shoegaze/emo/hardcore bands. I believe Tom is also partially making this point because I’m fairly confident he has no idea the Sonora exists.
I always forget that I like trance lmao. Listening to a recent A&B mix as I catch up on work that I fell behind on for the past few days of lineup frenzy.
Is there any chance I can get all of Charli --> all of Horsegiirl --> a big chunk of Above & Beyond --> all of Travis? I am sure the answer is no but that makes some "not to be discussed publicly" plans pretty fucking clear for the weeeknd.
If Charli’s at Main on her day (and not closing a stage) I could see you being able to do Charli > Horsegiirl > A&B. I think A&B will probably close Sahara since Misfits are closing Outdoor.
Lmao who did you guys *think* was going to be in Yuma???? Easily the most predictable lineup every year. I guess Amelie lens not being in Sahara and infected mushroom not being in a tent is really the only one semi-surprising.
At this point the 2026 thread is about desperately trying to manifest the headliners you specifically want for next year.
Right now, this lineup thread is now mostly about drugs, looking for small changes in the fine text of the dining section of the website, debating whether acts are DJ sets or live, posting videos of indie bands that should have been on the line up, ganging up on Supre, exchanging stolen site plan schematics behind the scenes and lining them up alongside Google Earth aerials to figure out if the Yuma has been extended by 10 feet, debating set times even though there is a thread for that, usually a fight or two, puns about Chappell Roan.
Please try to keep up.
Yes, except the ganging up thing. Although kind of sad there were 6 less weeks to pile on? Early lineup szn silver lining.
This is always a fun read
And agency breakdown
Leave it to the Stereogum oldheads in the comments to shit on anything outside of the 90’s rock and indie bookings
Curiously, Wasserman being the top booker means that Fred might be a good bet for Quasar
I don’t see Fred again playing a 3 hour dj set
Well he’s got a lot of famous friends, surely a b2b would be feasible? Like…what about Four Tet? He was a huge hit at Portola. And actually come to think of it there was that Jamie/Floating Points/Daphni b3b….uhhh what about Skrillex since they did that song together? That’d be a crazy combo but I think they could make it work.

Four tet feels like a solid bet for quasar, could definitely see that b2b happening.

A lot of Fred B2Bs would work, particularly Four Tet, or maybe Sammy
Biggest K-Pop snub was definitely Aespa. Sweeping the awards season over in Korea and arguably had the biggest year of any K-pop group this year. They’ve refined their performance skills a lot and most importantly sing their asses off, plus the visual direction would’ve been amazing.
