Here's my rundown looking at the 2023 and 2024 lineups next to each other.
I will have more fun at the headliners this year. I don't think they're better acts necessarily, but I'll have more fun. They're still "fine" but whoever made the point about RHCP being legacy... it's legitimately true.
2023 had some huge anchor acts for me like PJ mentioned. MMJ, Vulfpeck, Sofi Tukker, Paramore, Knocked Loose - these were all extreme hype acts for me that I was familiar with before and knew I would love.
This year has less of that, MTS and say she she might be the only ones at this moment because of how many times I've seen Cage.
Now - There are some acts on here that I'm not so familiar with that I think will carry a lot of weight throughout this weekend. PL, obviously, JRAD, Jon Batiste, Idles, CRJ - these acts all have the possibility to meet or surpass the experience of last years anchor acts. I'm just not as familiar so I don't know for sure.
Last thought is that imo, 2024 bottom 3 lines of each day far surpass 2023. There will be a lot of good acts to catch early in the day with maybe some calmer evenings and then coming back in hard for late night.
I'll be there, and I'm legitimately excited.
Where I'm running into trouble is finding stuff that's higher-plane musically. No doubt Batiste's band will be top notch. And BadBadNotGood of course. But there is such an emphasis on pop, indie-pop, folk and country where the musicianship isn't the main point. That shit is usually boring to me at a festival. I don't mind a bit of each of these (and I generally dig folk regardless), but I also want my ears and brain to be challenged. Could be any genre, but I want more Herbie Hancock, Jacob Collier, Makaya McCraven, Cory Henry, Billy Strings, Cory Wong, Victor Wooten, Sierra Hull type performers where the emphasis is on the playing and the music and not the level of bangingness of a 3 minute commercial, hit song that I wouldn't listen to anyway. Have some of that too, but don't sacrifice the quality and lose sight of the music. Even though I don't think I'd ever go to Coachella in this era, they don't forget to put shit like Kamasi Washington on the lineup every year be it him and his band or Dinner Party or whatever. Unless I haven't found some of this yet in the undercard, and I hope I do, there is a lack of higher level musicianship that I am looking for. I also agree about the anchor bands that help fill out the day. I'm totally cool with going blind to a show that I only researched enough to make the cut on my schedule. But last year had shit like Three-6, Vulfpeck, Liquid Stranger, STS9, Kendrick, Korn, Diesel, a Superjam I enjoyed and went to unlike the absolutely no chance of wasting that slot this year. I said heading into last year that future attendance would be lineup dependent, but I'm still going anyway. Just based on my lack of emotion for this lineup, I don't think it's a given that I'm going to go back again if this year is in fact a pivot into a new poppier era for them.

So you guys figure Bonnaroo saw the success of Emo Night and decided to intentionally rip it off for the Superjam?(This probably came up yesterday but I was pretty hungover and not following along too closely)
They’ve more or less settled on a winning formula for the lineup. Book 2.5 headliners that aren’t particularly newsworthy, but have a predictable/reliable appeal, then have an undercard that intentionally hits certain buckets like jam/jazz/heavier stuff. Maybe “winning” formula is too strong a word, but viable. OTOH, they still don’t know what the hell to do with the Superjam.

They definitely have a formula. Even if you just look back since 22 you can see the framework. Whether they hit the mark varies on preference. They probably pivoted to pop heavy this year because of the weak talent pool and trying to get the most people on the farm as possible. As for the superjam, I find it hilarious that if you swap 23 and 24 they fit a whole hell of a lot better imo.

Slept on it (again.. tee hee... have had the lineup for 3 days you peasants). Went and looked back at last years lineup, and I think this year's undercard is significantly better. And in fact when I look back at last year, I got wildly lucky that all 3 of Three 6 Mafia, Fleet Foxes and MMJ are top 20 artists of all time for me. I know that statement likely isn't close to true for anyone else, so I have always wondered why people really adored that lineup. But then I remember people ACTUALLY like Korn, Vulfpeck, STS9, Knocked loose, and stuff that were just "that will be fun at bonnaroo" acts for me. This year has way more shit that either already is, or I believe will be, in my listening rotation for years to come.
All of that said, I can't ignore that 3 of my top 20 all time artists were on that lineup and 0 are on this one. That's still the most powerful variable, so I would take last years. But I'm becoming more and more excited about this one.
How are we feeling about this after sleeping on it?
it feels like the day after christmas… i’m definitely excited for a lot of the undercard and the best gift was fred. there’s that weird bittersweet feeling bc i don’t have a huge act that grabs me like kendrick or paramore last year but overall i think there is a lot more undercard depth this year. 23 subs > 24 subs but 24 undercard > 23 undercard

Not sure your feelings on Fred, but he is Brian Eno's protege, so I think that speaks to his musicality and talent alone. He plays piano during his set and his drumpad jams are pretty incredible.
How are we feeling about this after sleeping on it?
I've warmed up to it a lot. I think while the Foo Fighters are a much better band than RHCP, I know pretty much all of the latter's setlist so I would probably enjoy the show a bit more for that.
I think having a huge Sunday and slow Saturday is such an interesting way to do it that hasn't ever really been done? Feel like I could go hard on the first two days. Take the third day off almost entirely with maybe one or two shows. And then end the weekend with a rager.
And after digging into the lineup there is a lot of quality music here. The only thing that really still bugs me is the lack of early bonnaroo legacy acts. And the emo Superjam. I wasn't an emo kid. So this lineup really feels like Bonnaroo leaving behind its roots to the past archives and fully embracing the Gen Z era of the oversaturated festival market, which I have thoughts on but really is probably just me aging out of the festival scene.
Exactly! I have no nostalgia for emo. I’ll recognize “Screaming Infidelities”, and that’s probably it.
esteban Feel free to disregard if it's not what you're looking for but I think there's actually a good amount of solid musicianship on this lineup:
Geese Say She She Khruangbin JRAD Gary Clark Jr. Thundercat Bonny Light Horseman Mdou Moctar Brittany Howard Greensky Irreversible Entalges
All of those (except Say She She which I haven't dug into yet) are shows I plan to be at. I love Thundercat and have seen him a couple of times. Once was great, once was kind of an R&B meh show. There's always going to be decent talent, and everyone you've got up there is very talented. All the Jam acts are too but that's every year. Maybe just wanting genius level shit is too much to ask for, but it's what I'm looking for. And new as in groundbreaking new styles and shit not everyone else is doing. Irreversible Entanglements are scratching that particular itch a bit as would Trap Jazz out of Atlanta. So yeah, you already know about 50% of the sets I'm going to be at. Hopefully I'll see you at most of those.

So this is unknown for me. I wasn't enamored with the Coachella broadcast show last year. But that was a b2b2b and probably a lot different. Eno is a fucking hero. I loved his shit with Roxy Music. I loved the Fripp & Eno ambient albums. I loved everything accessible from Here Come the Warm Jets and Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy to the bizarre shit like Another Green World or Music for Elevators vol. x. I also love his production work (along with Lanois) on the best 2 U2 albums - Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree.
So I'm optimistic that he's not going to do a lot of pop house despite the crowd though as a headliner in that setting, I can't bet on it. FWIW, I do have some hope for that set where I have zero for Post Malone or RHCP's
How are we feeling about this after sleeping on it?
Pretty good tbh. Hype to see 2/3 headliners. Undercard is really strong. Undercard is silly. A lot of artists I’ve never seen before which is nice. Most the artists I was hype for last year I had seen before, besides Tyler Childers and Three 6. Not overwhelmed with love for the lineup but I know I’d have a great time. Each day I’d have multiple things to look forward to, that I’ve never seen before. Even my least fav day Saturday is shaping up to be better than initially thought. Still haven’t listened through all the names I don’t know so sure I’ll find a few other solid acts in there. Last year there were 36 acts I wanted to see then year it’s pushing close to 50.
A Jack White, VW, YYY, AF, TAB, or Oysterhead as one of the subs would have made a solid lineup for me a great one.
Sure I made a lot of mistakes, def wasn't sure how to plan out Thursday!
thank you, coming up with the clashfinder from scratch is hard! i've tried before and given up immediately.
thursday: roison murphy and say she she conflict would be tough for many. pretty lights/eggy/bigx conflict seems very reasonable and would suck.
friday: mdou moctar > bonny light > hamdi > tv girl > ? > mars volta > shy fx > ? > t-pain. decent path before the headliner there. your late nights here are tough stuff. isoxo/thundercat/krungbang/key block/jrad all conflicting is no bueno. again not an objective criticism at all, seems very reasonable, just would be a bummer. this is why i love clashfinders it helps me get real about what i could actually see.
saturday: so actually for being the weakest day this schedule works out OK for me. MIKE > jon batiste > vandelux > kasablanca > knock2 > peppas > parcels > whyte fang. a lot of potentially middling EDM but could also be fun.
sunday: irreversible entanglements > armand hammer OR tsha > greensky > the garden > four tet > isbell > fred

I started one last night and made it halfway through Sat. That took like 3 hours. I’ll finish today after work.
